“I believe in tradition and we’re messing with tradition here.”

No, man.  That’s wrong.  There’s only one tradition that matters in today’s college football ($$).

Arkansas can soothe its sorrows by counting its money from SEC membership. A move to the Big 12 would introduce risk and probably cost the university a few million dollars per year. Last year, the SEC distributed $45.5 million to member schools. The Big 12 handed out $37.7 million.

Cash be king, bitchez.  David Shaw doesn’t approve, but there’s nothing he can do about it.  As for the rest of us…

That affects fans … how, exactly?

Arkansas’ SEC membership checks every box for almost every reason that decisions are actually made in college sports. But fans would be happier for a host of reasons if the Hogs were Big 12 members. College sports, we are told, are a non-profit exercise. And the reality of Arkansas’ SEC membership is it has been a raw deal for fans from the start. Little has changed in three decades.

College sports are supposed to be fun. Conferences are supposed to be about rivalries and bragging rights. Once upon a time, they were about regional dominance.

How quaint.

  1. Arkansas can’t leave because of money. No conference is itching to have that state’s eyeballs in their TV package. Then the Big 12 did take West Virginia.

shorter…sec playground is too tough so go play with the sissy/snowflake big 12 and you can win more – sounds like a tech slogan or motto.
I think ark is a good fit for sec.
i think a&m is a bunch tech-type dip shits dressed in maroon with cowboy hats but they at least had the good sense to get out from the lord of the manor in austin. hook ‘em horns + espn blew up that conference.

Does David Ubben write anything that doesn’t deal with pie in the sky b.s.?

I guess when your job is to cover Tennessee football, you really don’t have any other choice.

I hate the off-season for many reasons but one thing I really hate is that dumbass commenters create stories and memes on ridiculous conjectures and what if’s. I wish they’d keep their ideas to themselves and cover real stories not theoretical mumbo jumbo.

Hey man, that’s the best writing $1 for an entire year can buy. 😏

The SEC just forked over a $23 million advance to each school to help them patch holes in their budgets due to COVID….err, ummm, coach buyouts. That is called “walking around money” in the conference where it just means more. Plus, no mention of the ESPN TV contract for $3 billion starting in 2024. Lazy, dead period journalism where the writer did not perform a modicum of research.

    • You have this bass-akwards. He’s saying the reason Arky is in the SEC is because of the money, but it’s not the best fit for the fans.

No, he makes the claim that it is an $8 million differential between the two conferences’ payouts. It is about to be much more than that with the new TV contract looming. Plus, the SEC has the resources to make the $23 million in advances to each school, which I doubt is something the Big 12 could do.

If I remember correctly, one of the driving reasons for Arkansas leaving the Southwest Conference was because they felt like a third wheel and outsider in the SWC with all the other schools being Texas schools.

I don’t know about it not being a good fit for the fans. I think if you wanted to make a case for not being a good fit for the fans, I would start at Mizzou over Arkansas as the conference is currently aligned.
