Today, in be careful what you wish for

Found this on a message board and it’s too good not to share (although I really, really hope it’s not just sarcasm).

I hope Clemson only kicks field goals in the opener, too.

There was a time when I didn’t really hate clemson as much as I should. I’d kind of romanticized our rivalry and would not actively cheer against them. But lately, those people are insufferable, and we can’t beat them badly enough.

  7. Clemson fans I know have become insufferable – They totally ignore the conference strength thing – Claiming bias when its pointed out that If they played in the SEC they would lose 1+ game every year.

I know they would draw some recruiting from GA but I would REALLY like to see FSU return to prominence. Not just for a challenger in the ACC, but for giving the Gators a hard time at Thanksgiving. Those were some of the best games I remember watching as a kid when both programs were at peak (Spurrier v Bowden).

I don’t know that many Clemson fans so I cannot comment on whether they are tolerable or intolerable. I suspect that they are just like any fan base that has a long period of winning and never expect that it will end. They are good right now. Really good and while I think it is accurate that they would have a loss each season in the SEC (how many times has Bama emerged unscathed) – their track in the playoffs shows they can play with pretty much anybody.

Your point about FSU is really astute. Clemson is doing this in the ACC without a high level FSU or, for that matter, Miami. If and/or when those programs come back then Clemson might be in for some regression.

Also, for all of the love that Mullen gets as a “great coach” – his lack of recruiting ability with a FSU & Miami being at 60-70% of what they were – definitely points to a ceiling on his abilities and what they can win on a year to year basis.

Given that they’ve beaten Bama a couple of times, I give them better than once.

We’re been the playoff once. I’d have them probably 3 times, or half the amount they’ve been in the ACC.

They beat Bama after that ACC Murderers Row. I honestly think if they played in the SEC they’d have more beat up players and another loss or so. But we’ll never know. However big the hump was, Dabo finally got them over it.

Yeah, I mean, Bama was relatively healthy in those games they lost to Clemson, so I’m not buying it. Clemson, right now, is a great football program. Dabo rebuilt them from the ground up. He got rid of the word, “Clemsoning.” It doesn’t exist anymore. They’re factually a better football program than we are, right now at this moment.

We gotta stop doing to them what everyone does to us. Stop dawg-grading them. It’s a bad look for us. Yeah, they’re in an easier conference, but when they get to the playoff, they still have to win against the best teams in the nation. Don’t make excuses for why they do. It’s gauche.

Err, you lost me at “they’re better than us”. Then you used “gauche”. Clemson is not better than us and they never will be. Venables and the QB were better, we now have a counter and a roster that matches up moreso.

                Please stop being so defeatist.

They are. They’ve won two National Titles in the last five years. They are a factually better football program than we are right now. They closed the deal, twice beating Bama. We spit the bit playing Bama under Kirby three times, and the last three times Richt coached us against them, too.

How you feel about it simply doesn’t matter or affect the reality of the situation.

That doesn’t mean I want to be a Clemson fan any more than I want to be a Bama fan, but I can deal with reality. I get that many of y’all can’t.

But respect them and Dabo for what he’s been able to do. He’s earned it, in the same way you could hate S.O.S. but grudgingly respect him for being one of the best coaches ever. I mean, FFS, that dude took a terrible Sakerlina team and literally beat us 4 out of 5 years. That should never, ever happen, ever, and yet, he did it. I hate The Old Ball Sack and I love that we did more than most to force him to quit, but fuck he’s a great coach. If he wasn’t great, I wouldn’t hate him as much as I do.

I have a feeling that long before the game, these kinds of idiots representing Clemson fans will cause all of us who didn’t really grow up with Clemson as a real rivalry to hate that team as much as we do Auburn or the NATS.

Why not? I mean, we already have the most rivals of any CFB Team. Why not recognize another one?

FYI… the way I grew up our rivals were always these teams:

Traditional Rivals – Florida, Auburn, the NATS

      Geographic Rivals – Tennessee, Sakerlina

I started following the Dawgs in the mid-90’s, so for me, when we played Clemson in 2002 and 2003, it wasn’t that big a deal. They were just another team. However, if these assholes over at Auburn-with-a-Lake keep talking like idiot Floriduh ‘turds, hating them is going to be extremely easy.

Growing up across the river from them, halfway between the two campuses, subjected to the Greenville-Asheville-Spartanburg, TV stations as well as their sidewalk fans, I learned to hate those trailer trash douchecanoes at a young age. In my four years at UGA the Junkyard Dogs were 43-4-1. One of the losses and the tie were to those horseshoe-up-the-ass scumbuckets. I hope you learn to hate them for who they are and not for what they do to our beloved Dawgs.

Dabo is a great recruiter and cheerleader but he is not a good coach. He does have probably the best coordinators in college football though.

Don’t trade in this kind of bullshit. Dude is a good football coach. Yes, he’s hired great people, but he is still a good enough coach to make the kinds of right decisions at the ends of games to win two National Titles.

You really want to open a can of worms where people would compare Dabo’s crunch time decision making with our head coach’s?

I’ll never understand people disrespecting a hated rival with lies just to make themselves feel better. Given him the respect he deserves, so when we beat him, it means that much more.

Until he hired Morris, he was average as unsalted grits. Look at his record before he hired Morris and after. I give him credit as a great recruiter and a great “front man” for their program, he is excellent in both roles. I seriously doubt he made the decisions or play calls to win either NC game. He is smart enough to know he needs great assts and coordinators and that makes him a great CEO which I guess technically makes him a good college head coach.

I’ll be the first to say Kirby has suffered from his choices of offensive coordinators so far. I’m not including Monken in that statement because I don’t think 2020 was a season where judgement can be drawn. Kirby has shown himself to be a great recruiter and his defensive hires have been very good. His offensive hires have left something to be desired. On balance, I’d say Kirby is about where Dabo was at the same time in both head coaching careers as far as being a good head coach. I hope Monken is the missing piece that Morris was for Dabo.

I am the last person to put Kirby on any kind of pedestal at this point in time. The loss at home to what should have been a 3-9 SC team ensured my firm rooting in reality about Kirby.

Kirby is 52-14 with an national title game appearance, 4 final top 10s (high #2), an SEC title, 3 SEC championship game appearances, and 4 New Year’s 6 bowl games. Dabo was 47-20, 1 ACC championship (1 ACCCG appearance), 1 final top 10 (#8 in 2013), 2 Orange Bowls and 1 CFA Bowl, 1 losing season, and a bowl loss where his team gave up 70.

I’ll take Kirby’s record over Dabo’s at the same point right now. This is coming from someone who was skeptical about the Kirby hire through his first year.

No, literally in a better place, from facilities (by comparison) to money to relative success under Richt to living in one of the best recruiting states in the country.

Dabo built Clemson from the ground-up, and it took time. He turned Clemson into a premier destination for big time recruits in a relatively recruit-poor state. And yes, he IS a good coach, not just some idiot who relies on superior coordinators.

And as far as a Dabo vs. Kirby comparison, Dabo has beaten Bama more than Kirby’s zero times and has two National Titles. You may hate Clemson, you may dislike Dabo’s holier than thou shtick, but right now he’s a better coach than Kirby and that’s just the truth.

It’s okay to admit the truth even if it sticks in your craw. That way when we beat them in September and possibly again in the playoff, it means more.

Like I said, any kind of hate I may feel for a team or a coach isn’t going to influence how I view them in regards to what is reality versus the way I wish it was.

I wish we won two National Titles in the last five years with two amazing QBs and that Kirby caught on sooner, you know, at least back when Saban did in 2014, that you have to score more points to win and simply running the ball and stopping the run ended as a way to win it all in about 2012.

There’s lots of things I wish, but all that wishing and whatever rivalry hate I may or may not have won’t change what is. Better to acknowledge reality and deal with it instead of lying to yourself to ease the pain.

Yep, when Sony was injured and Fatso Chaney kept running Chubb between the tackles for the entire fourth quarter Bama was able to stop us on every third down. Our defense had to go right back out and chase a fresh Tua around, Chaney gave Bama the chance to tie the game up and Saban took advantage of the opportunity. Clemson knows to never take their foot off the gas, that is how they beat Bama and that is how anyone who beats Bama does it.. No one beats Bama by sitting on a lead.

These are people who, when they travel to bowl games, pay for everything with $2 bills so the locals will know they were doing business with clemson fans. These are people who think loading the team on buses and driving them from one end of their stadium to the other so they can touch a rock that a former coach used as a door stop is the greatest tradition in college football. These are people who wear game day attire to work all year long, on days when there is no game of any kind being played. They are without doubt the most obnoxious asshole fans in all of college football.
