Say you’re not a college athletics fan without saying you’re not a college athletics fan.

This exchange is from today’s Senate hearing on NIL compensation.

Tester’s from Montana.  Just sayin’, Mandel.

This is why I’ve been shaking my head all along at Emmert’s wish for Congress to clean up his mess. Congress is the LAST group of people you want to step in and make rules for college athletics or athletics of any kind – a plurality if not majority of the people in high elected office are all nerds who paid zero attention to sports except for when the athletes who play them were stuffing them in their lockers! Why would your end goal be to have people who know nothing about your business running your business?

Because it is all that is left. Desperate times.

I mean, I suppose I’ll concede that there’s ample evidence that the people who have been running the thing this whole time also have no idea how it works, but this is somehow still worse.

        • That was gonna be my response. The next time Emmert and the NCAA demonstrate they know anything about their business will be the first.

I mean have you heard most University Presidents? Not exactly a who’s who of college sports aficionados. The whole enterprise long ago outgrew and passed by the very people tasked with leading these institutions. But until recently it had been worth their while for the alligator in the bathtub to grow full sized. Now that the damned thing wants to get out and walk about the place, we have Congress involved.

If these were not just students but a group with paid lobbyist then congress would have a much better understanding of what these student athletes lives are like. We really do have the governmnet we desere at this point.

C’Mon Man!!… you know the thing!!!…. its… the, um.. common use of the facilities, and the time, so the students can play their classes and attend their games, and keep practice time to a maximum benefit…..

(if the POTUS were to chime in)

Is anyone surprised that Congress persons don’t know things they are to vote on. Their aids are tasked with this minutia and believe me the 20 somethings that are their aids tell them what their issue is on legislation. After all you wouldn’t expect 70-90 year old’s to be able to know this shit. Money talks all others walk. Oh yes and the lobbyist’s wine and dine the aids to get them to “see” their side. P.J. O’Rourke wrote the definitive work on Congress many years ago, “A Parliament of Whores”.

Not taking their side but when lobbyists take their concern to congressmen/women, they usually have a well-defined request with full documentation for the rep to read and educate himself on the subject. Aides are necessary…some are even knowledgeable… to handle the administrative workload and keep their bosses informed. Don’t condemn the staffs who are necessary as all good staffs are.

Devil’s advocate here: Were Tester’s questions rhetorical? Well played, if so.

I am sure we can all rest easier knowing the Senate is led by capable, diligent people like Sen. Testor. I look forward to the debate over a 1500 page bill crafted by lobbyists that nobody has actually read.

Not sure this is the time or place to discuss influencing types of persona but have ya’ll seen the new LA Bowl on December 28,2021. Seems the sponsor is none other than Jimmy Kimmel. Perhaps he could help the Congress to help the student athletes a hand. Quite the sports figure himself.

Crazy. I’m actually excited to attend this game. A buddy has Rams season tix and gets his sweet seats for the bowl game that he’s offered up.
