Georgia in Steele’s 2021 position group rankings

Honestly, the first thing I do when I get home with Steele’s Preview is check out where the Dawgs stand (or fall) in his top individual units rankings.

The good news is that Georgia is only one of two teams with all eight position groups finishing in the top twenty.  (I won’t bore you by naming the other program, although it’s worth mentioning that Oklahoma just missed by finishing 22nd in special teams and Clemson was also 7 of 8, outside the top 63 in special teams.)

Here’s where each unit sits:

  • Quarterback.  Georgia is 11th, Ole Miss is second.  Oklahoma is first.
  • Running back.  Dawgs are second, behind TAMU.
  • Receivers.  20th.  (Yes, receivers includes tight ends.)
  • Offensive line.  7th.  (Surprised?  Maybe a little, but Steele sees a lot of talent at the position.)
  • Defensive line.  2nd, behind Clemson.
  • Linebackers.  4th, behind Alabama and Clemson.
  • Defensive backs.  20th.  Alabama is first.
  • Special teams. 2nd, behind Alabama.

All in all, not too shabby.

Head to head, Alabama finished 5-3 against Georgia, but two of those units where ‘Bama ranked higher were back to back with the Dawgs.  It’s close, in other words.

    All it tells me is this another data point for the “no excuses not to be in Atlanta” point of view. This team is more talented than every team we play … yes, that includes the Greater Anderson Cow College.

    I got Steele’s encyclopedia-like magazine in the mail for the first time this year. I have no idea how I got on the mailing list, but jfc there are a lot of numbers in that thing.

    Surprised at the WR group – wonder if that was done before Gilbert?

      Had the same thoughts……also question the defensive line. Clemson has some 5 star talent returning, but so do the Dawgs and they certainly played better a year ago (#1 – rush defense).

      Especially when you consider what conference they are playing in. With what we have coming back, I’d rate the Dawgs #1 there.

      Thinks he is just looking solely at the star rankings. But I like it, will probably give us a bigger chip on our shoulders.

      Without Pickens it’s a lot of rock solid guys and a lot of potential. Gilbert looked real good but he still only MIGHT be the next Kyle Pitts, and that’s a very very big ask.

    I wonder about the QB ratings. Rattler and Corral as 1-2 (although I might say 2-1) don’t surprise me but I wonder about the 8 in between them and JT. Are we talking unproven freshmen 5*s? Is Emory Jones in there? I have to question that a little bit. But in less than 8 weeks now we get to find out for real.

    I can only assume they are counting Smith and Anderson as DL. I’d also be shocked if Dean, walker, and tindall were outplayed by the likes of stakauskis or any other Clemson LB. I’m sort of befuddled as to how he could come to that conclusion.
