Hey, look who’s developed a sudden attack of conscience!
Oklahoma and Texas heading to the SEC is looking increasingly likely by the hour, but that doesn’t mean all is nirvana within the athletic offices of schools throughout the conference.
As we reported here on Wednesday evening, discussions have been happening between the SEC office and the two Big 12 schools since late last year. As is so often the case in college athletics, it appears the deal was almost done by the time the backdoor dealings became public knowledge.
Much has been made about Texas A&M’s feelings on the potential addition. Athletic Director Ross Bjork spent Wednesday afternoon on a media blitz, making it clear to everyone in Hoover that he didn’t want the league to add another team from Texas.
The SEC’s members have had a gentleman’s agreement for years that the conference wouldn’t add a team in a state that one of the league’s institutions already resided in. Well, not anymore.
Said an SEC source to Dawg Sports, “The last time around it was about opening up new states and metropolitan areas for television deals. This time it’s about cumulative eyeballs.” In the era of streaming, brands like the Longhorns and Sooners are a massive coup to the league.
A high-ranking official at the University of Georgia, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawg Sports that the school understands that, but they don’t necessarily like it. “It will never be public knowledge because the school will present a united front with the rest of the conference, but nobody in the administration is really excited about this.”
Let me see if I’ve got this straight. A notoriously money-grubbing organization that was fully on board with a poorly thought out, strictly for revenue enhancement, conference expansion move accomplished by taking two teams from the Big 12 now has grown a pair of scruples over another round of revenue-enhancing conference expansion accomplished by taking *** checks notes *** two more teams from the Big 12?
Oh, puh-leeze. Just STFU and stuff a few more bills under the reserve fund mattress, okay?

I hear what you are saying but I can see people in the various athletic departments having reservations. Maybe it’s the coming playoff expansion or paying players but this round of expansion seems different. It feels like this time instead of a few teams rearranging the chairs on the deck boat of the titanic we are actually going down. There will only be four conferences after this. The playoffs will be 12 teams before shortly expanding again. Players will be paid. Basically NFL lite but instead of cowboys vs giants it will be dawgs vs Auburn.

You can just be quiet. The smarter folks in the room have told us all this change is good for the sport. Players focused on their “brand,” 16 team leagues, expanded playoffs. I LOVE PROFESSIONAL SPORTS!

For people in support of expansion for money, prestige, or playoff spots, remember that when Georgia and Auburn stop playing each other annually because pods are cute … the only other years they haven’t played since 1892, the world was at war. When this happens, I would much rather play Alabama every year than lose the annual game with Auburn.

Auburn won’t be in our pod because they’ll be in the same pod as Alabama. The question is how any cross-pod permanent opponent would work especially if the league stays at 8 conference games.

Pods or divisions, it’s going to 9 games. Last year showed it wouldn’t be the end of the world to play more than 8 games.
The issue is, at 9 games with 16 teams, you play every other team in the conference twice in four years.
This means our yearly rivalry with Auburn will end. So once again, Georgia gets fucked by the SEC.

That is a reason alone for Georgia and Auburn to vote against this. The only way this works for us would be to move Bama and Auburn to the East and keep the divisions.

No one cares about playing Auburn every year anymore. this is not 1987 and we are tired of the admin acting like they are “giving” us Auburn as the premium ticket of the home game slate every other fall. Besides, Auburn ‘s Alabama culture doesn’t help our brand. Hopefully we can now rotate them out with a newer, expanded variety of home teams from the West including Texas & Oklahoma. Oldest southern rivalry is hokey pokey, rah rah bs. Finally time to modernize

If the math / calendar presented the choice, I would throw Georgia Tech to the dustbin before touching Auburn. The way I look at it, Bobby Dodd made that bed for everybody in 1964 when they left the SEC. It’s just that we’ve been generous to them for the last 57 years.

Hey “source”, stay anonymous, please just stay. The source logic: No one wants to go to Athens for a 5th SEC home, night game vs Oklahoma or Texas, but instead would rather families keep schlepping to 2 other hot, 12:30 fcs game & pay $20 bucks per ticket.

I doubt they’ll stick at 8 games. The pods don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Each team can have their own unique pod.

Maybe the sec should pull an ‘Amazon’ and take offers from ALL schools. They could choose from the most attractive offers, and wouldn’t have to placate egos from just these 2 candidates.

Wouldn’t be that hard to recruit a paranoid South Carolina (Clemson phobia despite long rang lock up in ACC) and possibly Mizzou.

They are doing this all wrong. Don’t admit new teams to the conference, just license the use of the SEC name and let them keep playing out west amongst themselves. Win-win for everybody (you think Texas and OU want any part of playing the top SEC teams?!).

I am kind of there with you. I also think aTm should just rise up and take their angst out on the field.
I just hope that being in the mighty SEC UT and OK don’t start getting recruiting titles and emerging as dynasties again. We, as in the SEC, enjoy the privilege of attracting great players and coaches and that power will be bestowed onto a couple of historic programs.

If the SEC expands to 16 teams why not go all the way to 20? Add Clemson, Miami and FSU from the ACC plus Maryland from the B1G.

Senator, adding TAMU and Mizzou, and even OU, is nothing like adding TEXAS.
Texas is going to cause the SEC nothing but headaches. They’re a bunch of prima donna douchebags who demand constant attention and special favors. They are terrible partners.
I’m honestly surprised TAMU can’t gin up more support to get the four “no” votes they need, because Texas is just that horrible.
I’m good with adding OU. I’m good with going to 16. I’d just rather it be Okie State. Texas is the absolute worst and they just might be the death of the SEC when it’s all said and done.

People keep giving Texas chances to destroy their conference because of the money. Smart people see the pattern, and would stay the hell away from Texas.
Money doesn’t excuse the kind dereliction of duty it takes to agree to let the wolf inside the gate.

I do agree OU is a good fit for the SEC. Texas not so much they do offer what everyone wants money. The SEC is full of CFB blue blood presidents and ADs that would happily ban together and smash Texas like a bug on a windshield at Daytona if needed. This is not a Conference Texas can bully no matter how hard they try.
I do think the timing is connected to the NIL. No matter how fans feel CFB players are just beginning to see the first wave of getting paid. Going forward everything regarding players will revolve around what’s in it for me.
That does sound just like the schools and CFB power brokers who started this change. The game I grew up loving is changing at warp speed around money. Nobody making the decisions GAS about how the fans feel. They only worry how will they affect our wallets ( donors and ticket buyers).

I don’ get the fear of Texas so many seem to have. History has shown they can’t be trusted to play nice I get that. Yes at some point they will attempt to screw the SEC. Whenever they try they’ll quickly find out their vote counts as much as Vandy’s. In today’s CFB world Texas needs the SEC. No matter how much they try they’ll never control the SEC.
I don’t like the current SEC scheduling not that matters to anyone making the decisions. It’s been 12 years still no trip to College Station. Every year we kept getting fed more shitty cupcake home games. Long term cupcakes will hopefully end up in the form of April and late August exhibition games. Schools can sell tickets to each.
I love adding OU and Texas assuming that means a minimum 9 SEC league game schedule. Staying with two 8 team leagues solves the schedule problems. Since this is all about the money we’ll probably get 4 league pods the winner of each goes into a conference 4 team playoff. All this before the CFB playoffs cash grab.
Change is here no matter how fans feel about it. With the demand for more money from the leagues expect those paying the cash to demand better quality games from the conferences. If the end result is a better home schedule along with better weekly matchups I’m in.

As I see it, not that it matters, Expansion adding Mizzou and TAMU wasn’t a big deal because neither was that much of a threat competitively. OU and Texas stand to be major threats to the competitive status quo.
Say this happens and Mizzou goes to the west and Bama and Auburn come to the east. Assuming some sort of cross divisional scheduling, there could be a huge increase in cannabalism in the conference. I see it hurting us. My question is: Does it hurt Bama?
