A rosy receiver outlook

You may recall from an earlier post that Phil Steele ranked Georgia’s receiver group (yes, including tight ends, and yes, including Arik Gilbert) twentieth.  Well, feast your eyes on this set of rankings from Pick Six Previews, which has been as accurate as Steele on preseason projections:

If that turns out to be the case, I’m gonna be one very happy Dawg fan.  Although, I suspect, not as happy as JT Daniels would be.

Seems like it’s routine to see one of our WRs sidelined with a major leg injury these days. But we’re loaded with talent. I expect ‘somebody’ to break out and have a big year. It could be any of 6 or more guys: Gilbert, Jackson, Washington, Burton, Smith, etc.

I really expect Jackson to break out big time. I think lots of coaches will be focused on getting their corners/safeties covering the other “bigger” names. Meanwhile they forget we have a WR that is built like a LB running around out there.

I don’t recall the Dawgs ever having a top five receiver corps and this list got me to thinking. I’ve pondered whether Kirby is obstinate in being slow to embrace wide open offense in favor of his personal preference for Manball. I’m inclined to reject that speculation in favor of his being more astute at fitting scheme to available personnel. The best example is the 2017 season where CKS took mostly Richt’s players and basically beat his mentor. Injuries and lack of depth at receiver and QB has further hampered his transition to a deep/quick strike O more even than unimaginative offensive coordinators. I think Kirby has done a pretty damn good job as a green HC considering the competition.
That brings us to where we are now. In his sixth season Coach Smart has the tools to go as far as circumstances will allow. Top tier D is almost a given. He has the above mentioned top five receiver corps along with more depth at talented QB than can be expected in these days of play-me-now-or-buh-bye. The Dawgs have the stud RBs and O line to revert to Manball if that’s what the opposing D dictates. However, I’m sure Monken wouldn’t have come back for anything less than an opportunity to showcase his innovative and hopefully spectacular offensive capability.
This season should lay to rest any questions of Kirby’s ability to adapt to the dynamics of college football and if he’s more than simply a great recruiter. I’m admittedly biased toward his being potentially the GOAT. It’s not a make-or-break year for him or the program. We should discover if CKS is the man to guide and lead UGA Football into this twisted new era of super conferences and enriched student athletes or if y’all need to begin looking for someone better.
Me? I’m betting on the Damn Good Dawg from Bainbridge.

Now that’s out the way please allow me to convey my football conversations last week with my gaytard pals on the fishing vacation at Cape San Blas.
Nonexistent. Nada damn word. Their silence said more than any conversation. Gator Bob and I texted during the debacle that was the last Cocktail Party. He was fully aware of the defensive limitations from injuries and that the Dawgs were up 14-zip with a fourth string walk-on QB and knew they dodged a bullet with that win.
They know the jig is up and they got an ass whoopn coming. Bob is no casual and deluded fan. He’s a real sports nut that played baseball at FU. It was a good vacation. I came home with a cooler full of snapper and grouper and didn’t have to slap the shit of anyone.
Go Dawgs! And for good measure…
          Fuck those motherfuckers!

I don’t know that it is talent as much as coaching (offense) that has held Georgia back. Kirby certainly has the recruiting chops and is capable as a coach himself – however, how we do will be determined with how well he is able to seek out coaches that match our player talent. Really, that has been Satan’s magic talisman – can Kirby keep up?
