Hope that he gets a good tax advisor. He could end up paying gift tax on the amount that he shares with his team mates, in addition to the income tax he will owe on the initial amount received. Uncle Sam doesn’t care about team spirit; he just says “show me the money.”

He would just have to file a form for each in excess of $15k. Lifetime exemption amount is around $11M. However, I would assume since the split is announced as part of the deal it will be structured as direct payments to the individual. I assume UGA AA has oversight and involvement on every deal to streamline these scenarios.

A 7-figure deal??? Wow! Looks like all his offensive linemen will be driving around in Dodge Challengers now, and good on J.T. Daniels for sharing. Hah! Now, I’m not coming down on the guys who don’t share and no one else should either, because we don’t know them or their family’s situation. However, a guy like J.T. Daniels who comes from a family that’s doing better than many others can afford to share his good fortune, and he has the good character to recognize that.
Football is the ultimate team sport, and while there will be guys who take what they get from NIL and use it for themselves and to help their families, there will be others who share with teammates. Those are both good choices, and it should always be left up to the choice of the individual. I hope at some point the Georgia NIL Law is altered to reflect that.

To be fair, it also puts pressure on the next QB for us. Whomever that is may not be in a financial position to do the same? I know, if it’s a million dollars there would likely be no problem. Ya never know though, some kid might need to bail out his grandparents’ medical debt, or any other random situation.

Good luck sorting out the logistics on sharing that $ and the tax implications associated with that. Yikes.
If it’s given as a gift then JT pays the taxes. In that scenario he could give away half and get taxed on 1/3rd. He’s left with about $.17 on the dollar.
Or he could share his post tax half. That leaves him with around $.30 on the dollar.
Or he could ask the vendor to pay all 100 of his teammates. That’s a hassle for them but maybe he worked it into the deal.
This space is ripe for automation

He isn’t going to have to pay any gift tax on the gifts while he is at Georgia. He can give up to $15,000 per year to any person without even having to file a gift tax return. He can give up to $11,000,000 before he even gets over the lifetime exemption and has to pay gift tax.

Milton – I don’t mean he will pay a gift tax. I mean…if he’s paid as a 1099 contractor he will get taxed on the total. Then when he gives the gift the OL or WR may not have to pay taxes because of the size of the gift. But JT would have already been taxed on the sum.

I wasn’t aware of it until I read some posts elsewhere talking about it, but they’re apparently hot as fire again. MLB, NFL, and college football. They say you can’t find the packs in stores right now. Said if you have any old ones send them off to get graded, anything you have is at top dollar. I guess this bubble comes along about every thirty years or so. I have a footlocker full of baseball cards from the early 90’s that I may have to break out.

#metoo. Also Glavine, Maddux, Smoltz and all the starters I think. Along with their card for ’95. It was a gift from my sweet wife who was also a Braves fan. I’d have to look to verify that. Put ’em in a box and haven’t looked at ’em since.
Do ya’ll think it’s a good time to sell cards? Simply not a fan anymore.

RR, hell if we read the fine print on some of those restraining orders, you and me both probably can’t go closer than 100 yards to lemonade stands, playgrounds that only recognizes obscure pronouns, 7 Day Adventist VFWs (when the fuck is happy hour?), non-sanctioned meth labs, VD testing sites, and probably Tourette’s Bingo night…instead of bandaids, stock bail money …or at least enuff 4 me

That is assuming JT got all the money from each card. I’m sure ESM is going to want a cut. At the 50% noted, that is 20,000 people paying $100 per card. Of course, some big money donor could buy 10,000 for himself.

I just have all kinds of questions about this. Never heard of Darren Rovell. Never heard of ESM. And does JT get $100 for every card he signs? Whether the cards sell or not? Who’s paying him? How much do the cards cost and where do you buy them? They can’t be like the baseball cards I’m familiar with, who the hell would pay $100 for one of those cards?
The economics of this just don’t make sense to me.

If ESM treats him as an independent contractor he can form an LLC and issue 1099’s to his team mates for professional protection services (LMAO).
