It’s Saturday in Charlotte!

Georgia has a game today.  You may have heard something about it.  It’s kind of a big thing.

Seriously, it’s not every opening week you’ve got two top five teams facing off against each other.  Finally, we’ll get to trade the preseason yakking for the postgame overreactions.  Such a deal!

Here are three pieces to get you warmed up for today’s action.

If you’ve been following the game over the summer, the bottom line is that there aren’t a lot of new hot takes left to make.  Neither of these teams really have what you’d call weak spots.  It’s more the case that some areas aren’t as strong as others.

Nothing has changed my mind to think line play won’t decide this, as clichéd as that no doubt sounds.  Although I do worry about how Georgia will defend Ross working out of the slot.

Wild cards?  Turnovers and COVID protocols, I guess.

The thing I’m most curious to see is what Monken, Year Two:  The Offense has to show for itself.  More than the win or loss, I’ve got the feeling that’s going to have more of an impact on Georgia’s season than anything.

Speaking of win or loss, this game could go any way and I wouldn’t be surprised.  In my gut, though, “been there, done that” sounds most convincing.  I think Clemson wins and just covers.  Prove me wrong, Dawgs!

As always, consider this your game day invitation for commenting.  Have at it.

    Dawgs by two scores.
With that, I’m off to the hinterlands and I’ll apologize in advance for any posts tonight. I’ll be drinking and following/posting from a phone.

Too many injuries to the most key positions for the Dawgs, especially with Smith out, who would have covered Ross in the slot.

    We lost.

    BUT.

We get healthy as the year goes on, beating the shit out of Sideshow Dan the Clown and Floriduh, winning the East, FINALLY beating Bama in the SEC Title game (their second loss so they can’t backdoor into the Playoff… they’ll lose to The Lane Train and Ole Miss), then we’ll beat Tosu in the first round of the Playoff, and we will meet Clemson and Dao again in the National Title Game.

    Where. We. Will. WIN.

I too, could see this game going several ways but I’m thinking first team to break 30 wins. Unfortunately I think it’ll be Clemson 34 – Dawgs 30. But the loser will have the advantage during the Playoff rematch.

I think Monken is the biggest X factor. If I’m not mistaken, this is the first season since ’18 that we’ve had continuity at the offensive coordinator position. The last “first time” that happened was 2017. So I’m hopeful. The injuries are a booger, but that’s part of the game.

I’m sitting in the shade boiling 2 bushels of peanuts to put up, the beer is on ice, and it’s opening day of football season. It’s a great dang day today.

Well this thread is a stone cold bummer. Jordan Davis and our dline take over the game. Our defensive backs get burned a couple times and DJ hits some deep balls but Monken wins the chess match and James Cook is our leading receiver. Good guys win 34 – 31.

I see your point, but MIA has been physically overmatched since the first play. They’re motivated, or they were at first, but no. Stevenson made some plays though, nice to see. Like us, expect AL to get better throughout the season. I think we have a higher floor to start with which will be confirmed or laughed about in about 3 hours.

We’ve got the better team. Clemson has had the breaks..missed UGA chip shot FG…recovering a questionable punt that hit their player first…penalties on UGA…
JT looks tight as a clock spring. We had receivers open deep a couple of time early and he didn’t see them. Maybe he’ll loosen up in the second half.
    Meanwhile, we’ve had zero breaks. Z E R O. Clemson’s had them all.
I think that was the wrong call on the punt turnover. If the punting team can touch it first then what’s to keep them from slapping the ball into a receiving team player on every punt?
If we can get a little bit of a vertical passing game going, we might pull this out. As it is, our dinking and dunking is going to get us in trouble.
Just a little more pressure on Ukelaeli and he’ll choke again.

The “fumble” on the punt (really wasn’t a fumble – maybe call it a muff?) was bad luck. The reason it went over to Clemson was Milton was doing a damn fine job blocking his man and ran him into the ball then it hit Milton.

If the Clemson player was disengaged from a block then the ball would have been dead when the Clemson player touched it.

Watching this again this morning. The Senator called it for the last month: the team that played best OL win. Our line played good, their’s didn’t. That allowed us to squeak out the win. We won the field position battle.

Our offense didn’t look as bad on replay, just couldn’t finish off drives. I’m feeling good for the year. Don’t think we’ll face another D like Clemson until post season.

Not to be argumentative but I didn’t feel we squeaked out the win. Maybe it was part of watching it live , but I felt Clemson was never in the game. DJ looked AWFUL. The little bit of offense they had was the result of PI penalties. They rarely had men open. When they did DJ didn’t have time to find them. We played perfect defense. You’re not going to win too many games when you score 3 points.

I agree with you gurka that Georgia outplayed Clemons the entire game. But unfortunately we are all familiar with games where the Dawgs outplayed the other team but lost the game. The Dawgs didn’t put Clemons away when they had the chance leaving the door open to a Hail Mary, fumble return for TD, etc. Glad that didn’t happen. Now we need to run the table, win the SEC East, beat the West Champion and kick ass in the playoff—all one game at a time.
