While we’re talking about the offense…

here’s a take at The Athletic ($$) about the home opener.

UAB at Georgia -24.5, 3:30 p.m. ET, Saturday

This UAB defense didn’t just look good because they were playing Jacksonville State. It has played very well over the past few years. They have made things difficult on some of the more prolific offenses in the NCAA. They will not be intimidated by Georgia’s offense. They will welcome the challenge. The Dragons’ offense will be intimidated, or at least they should be. The Georgia defense is for real. The job of the UAB offense will be to not give up points to Georgia on that side of the ball. If they take care of the ball, the UAB defense will hang with this Georgia offense. They won’t shut them down, but this will not be a blowout.

Pick: UAB covers, 24-3 Georgia

“If they take care of the ball” is the magic phrase there.  UAB is certainly a respectable program and when I saw that spread, I did wonder about it.  But if Georgia winds up in positive turnover margin territory, I don’t see UAB covering.

Nobody should be scared of our offense.

  2. Can UAB move the ball against our defense? Doubtful. What does that mean? The floodgates slowly open as their defense gets tired and field position tilts against them.

From one of the same writers who was singing the praise of Clemson’s defense, especially their defensive line….now Georgia’s offense is moribund because he was right? Makes perfect sense. Even the best offense only takes what they can take from the defense they are facing. If the defense does not give much, the offense wont get much. Its really that simple. Clemson has the depth to play that way till the last four minutes of the fourth quarter. UAB does not.

Even if we just run the effing ball for the entire game, UAB ain’t covering.

uab will cover the costs of coming to Athens Town, uab will cover themselves in quality bedding while in Athens, uab will cover the tab for a wonderful Athens dining experience, uab will cover a hand shake while receiving their parting check and hauling ass back to b’ham for some much needed rehab…

I hope they prove me wrong, but I’m expecting a lethargic and at times sloppy performance from the dawgs. It takes a while to get the hangover and rat poison out of your system.

Agreed PD. It’s tough to sustain that extreme level of intensity displayed by the Dawgs D against those taters. I hope I’m wrong and that’s simply business as usual for those rabid Bulldawgs.
Now the Dawgs O? They have something to prove. I’d like to see them show out. Flip the narrative.

That’s how I see it. Apparently a lot of 6 year Sr’s on they UAB team. They are respectable…better than 3-4 SEC teams.

I don’t see us covering that spread. I think we will win by two scores. If we win by 4 scores it will mean that UAB gets down big in the first half, and they may.

My first thought is that they’re the Blazers, not the Dragons. But after that, we cover.

I think it will be a 27-10 type win for Georgia. UAB will score a late touchdown against the backups and a turnover or hitting a long pass will get them in fg range earlier in the game. Our offense is not good.

but more than likely, good enough to win……and I am happy with that until we get back some of these key injured players.

I’m thinking same JC. Bill Clark has it going on @ UAB. Defensive minded (top 10 nationally in total D last three years). Defending Conf USA champs. Dawgs coming off an emotional win. I am going to hope our offense airs it out (somehow) utilizing team mgrs and grad assistants @ WR (lol). If I were going to bet this game, I’d be on UAB with the points.

Tell me exactly what the COVID situation is in Butts-Mehre and I’ll tell you if we cover or not.

That spread is too big for our injured offense. UAB is pretty good and we may have a post-Clemson hangover.

Talent differential, UGA O vs UAB D, even with the injury list, is massive.

If the offense doesn’t average 8+ yards a play, color me alarmed.

I think UAB’s offensive strategy plays right into our strengths on D. They base everything off of outside zone reads. With Davis et al. clogging up the interior, our LBs are going to be free to clean up and there are going to be a number of batted passes on seam routes. We’ll give up some short passes, but the DBs are going to be able to keep the bubble pretty tight.

They’re a very respectable G5 team, but they’re about to get a national championship level effort out of this offense that I’m going to go out on a limb and say is not real pleased about just getting shut down.

This should be an absolute blood bath

  15. JT has got something to prove. Last Saturday was the biggest arena he’s played in yet. He’ll hit his targets this week. Dawgs roll 38 – 10

  16. UAB is a pretty good program as far as supposed “cupcakes” go, and UGA coming out flat the week after a high-profile victory is as sure as the sun rising in the East or the Falcons blowing a second-half lead. The Dawgs will win, but I’m taking UAB and the points and not thinking twice about it.

If Kirby keeps em focused on winning every down all week and tells em all week how they looked like shit Saturday, then it’s a blowout.
Methinks Kirby can refocus them on the task at hand, but this UAB team may have a few dudes. Lots of upper class men “second chance” type JUCO cars wanting to improve that free agent stock. They’ll play hard.

UAB, like most G5 teams has really good 1st teamers. The depth issue will make the difference. We’ll start slow like always but by the 2nd half their guys will run out of gas and we will overpower them. I don’t bet so no predictions on spread.

I think we called plays against Clemson knowing JT was not going to have all day in the pocket. Add in green receivers vs veteran talented DBs, plus a flow of the game indicating that any major gaffe by an offense would be a game changer and Kirby’s sphincter tightened. Mostly understandably.

This should be a lot different. Our green receivers will have more time against lesser talent to find open space.
