I smell ESPN here… They have us in the Noon spot to tie down early viewers, instead of Vandy… Would much rather be on ESPN U at 7:30. But that pulls from UF and Kentucky and really hurts the MSU/Aggie game.
2nd rank team in the country in one of the best football environments in all of college football and you are putting them on at noon?

If Arkansas beats A&M this weekend, this is likely a Top 10 or 12 matchup…crazy to put it at noon.

I came here to post something similar. I don’t know if Arkansas jumps all the way up to 10, but it would be close. Especially if/when Wisconsin beats Notre Dame this weekend as well. But if Arkansas does beat A&M, with Ole Miss off this weekend, the Georgia vs. Arkansas game is clearly the second best game of the weekend to Alabama vs. Ole Miss which is already at 3:30 on CBS.

Yeah, I thought this would be a 6-day option decision with a chance to wait and see how Ark does against aTm. I think Ark may win that game, which would make UGA-Ark a pretty big deal. Nothing was going to get Bama and Joey Freshwater out of the CBS slot.

Agreed. Bama Ole Miss was already slotted as the 3:30 game and it should be with the #1 team vs. a team that will likely be #10 to #12. But if Arkansas wins, and I think that they have a good chance, that game is #2 vs. somewhere between #10 and #14 for sure and deserved a better time slot. And like you said, a six day option decision would have been warranted since the Arkansas game this weekend isn’t at Kyle Field, aTm gave up 171 yards of rushing to Colorado two weeks ago and would have lost if CU had an offense (and CU managed a pitiful -19 net yards against Minnesota two days ago), and Arkansas has averaged 282 YPG of rushing and 6.1 YPC rushing in three games. If aTm is asleep at the wheel this Saturday they are going to get beat.

Does ESPN have a six-day option? Or is that limited to CBS?
If they do have one, obviously they’ve got another week somewhere down the line that they think will be more useful.

Personally, I have enjoyed the “big noon B1G” games. If I had to guess, ESPN has to replicate that hype going forward with the CBS games going away soon. Works for me, solid game at noon, 15:30, and 19:00/20:00 with channel flipping options. The product on the field will not be the first concern, it will be eyeballs. Soon we will be experts on all things about our team AND the predicted viewership. Then, we will be more concerned about viewership than the game itself.
How about Dr. Pooper? I bet they are having meetings regarding that Clemmy QB…lol.

The noon ESPN game is probably Mickey’s third-biggest slot after the 8 PM ABC game and the 7/7:45 ESPN game. It’s the default game to watch for everyone who just rolled in from College Gameday. Their 3:30 ABC slot is split up regionally and usually isn’t all that big.

Maybe that’s it – absolutely hate it that time slot though.. With that said, as much as it sucks for Georgia; the Hawgs have to fly in after a road game and start a game that their bodies tell them is 11AM in the morning.

They weren’t passing on Kiffin vs Bama, that’s for sure. And Bama is probably the 3:30 game the following week (at Aggies). I’m surprised we didn’t get one of the 6/7 pm slots. On one hand, last week’s game killed me; on the other hand, there’s the idea that early kick offs favor road underdogs. Arkansas is a dangerous game for us and it’s danger quotient just multiplied.
It probably means, too, that we’re likely playing a night game at Auburn in week 6. SMDH.

Teamspeedkills.com did some research on this from 2005-2015 that I had to search around to find, but the crux is this. Among all SEC teams regardless of start time, home teams have a .543 winning percentage without looking at how good the home team was in comparison to the road team (and neutral site games are left out). Then they expanded that research to figure out how even or not the teams were and they didn’t use betting lines, but instead used S&P+/- ratings. If a team was more than a touchdown better in S&P+ than their opponent they were considered the “favorite”. If a team was less than a touchdown better using S&P, then they were considered “peers” and the game was considered a tossup game. Without adding an adjustment for “home field advantage” (“HFA”), home teams had a .593 winning percentage in tossup games. Home favorites (greater than TD better in S&P+) had a .905 win percentage and road favorites had a .893 win percentage.
They then used a table created by predictionmachine.com which tried to create an HFA value for each FBS team from 2000 to 2014 (in other words, HFA isn’t created equally since HFA at Vandy isn’t like HFA at LSU regardless of the time of day). Using the PMHFA to adjust the S&P+ value between the teams, home teams in tossups had a .481 winning percentage, home favorites had an .860 winning percentage, and road favorites had a .924 winning percentage. This isn’t as nonsensical as it might first appear. If the PMHFA gives the home team a value of “x” added to its S&P ranking, then it probably makes some of the games a “tossup” even though the road team on a neutral field would be a clear favorite without PMHFA. For example, the road team is 9.8 points better in S&P than the home team but with PMHFA the difference becomes 6.8 points better for the road team and the game is now a “tossup” even though it really isn’t. Using the PMHFA adjusted numbers, there were 46 upsets in 368 mismatches (where one team was the S&P favorite of more than a touchdown after giving effect to HFA) for an upset rate of 12.5%. Home favorites accounted for 32 of the 46 upsets but again, the home team could have been a relatively evenly matched team with the road team but PMHFA could have moved the game from tossup to making the home team a favorite (e.g. LSU with a high PMHFA losing in a night game against a team about the same as or better than LSU on the field).
They then looked at midday games which they classified as kickoffs between noon and 2:30 PM eastern time. Unadjusted for PMHFA, there were 15 upsets in 107 mismatches, good for an upset rate of 14% which was fairly evenly split between home favorites (8) and road favorites (7). Adjusted for PMHFA, there were 16 upsets in 113 mismatches, good for an upset rate of 14.2% but the home team accounting for a whopping 11 of the 16.

October 9th is the CBS 3:30/8 doubleheader. I’m willing to bet a lot of money that 3:30 is the Georgia/Auburn game and 8 is the Bama/A&M game.
October 16th is the CBS noon/3:30 doubleheader as well. We’re probably looking at Georgia @ Kentucky and Florida @ LSU for those two, likely in that order unless Kentucky beats Florida or LSU loses to both MSU and Auburn.
We’ll be on CBS at 3:30 the next game as well (Cocktail Party).

As always with college football it’s about the money. If Arkansas wins this weekend even better for them. With a 12:00 start this game draws nationally not just in the south. As shitty as it is for the fans it’s a backhanded compliment to Georgia as a National brand.

Understanding marketing plus profitability and the bid process, never could grasp cbs reducing their sports related portfolio sec football, masters (early vs late viewership) knowing they will always be tied to the nfl/superbowl, march madness, cutting ties with regional college football seems like they’ve given in to the under tow that is the wwl…or maybe it’s the fact that mickey fucks up (really bad broadcast peeps) the game/games in general that leaves me wanting to go back to the stadium till i see the 3 minute commercial timer pop up every three minutes…almost makes the sky box worth the donation…

If I’m watching on TV the 3:30 time slot is ideal. But, as an old guy who went to games before there were lights in Sanford, a noon start isn’t that different 1:00-2:00 starts I grew up with. Especially in October and have tickets on the southern side of the field noon games are fine for those in actual attendance. Traffic afterwards has a lot more time to filter out, bars and restaurants can do a little business. Point is, there’s silver linings to it.

Vanderbilt noon coming out flat should not be an issue. They are only a little better than a top HS team. Arkansas noon coming out flat could spell disaster. This is a hungry team that is getting better and better. Just have to be overly cognizant of the risk and not let it happen. A well lubricated, raucous crowd will help in that department.
