Your Daily Gator attains enlightenment.

Oh.  My.  Gawd.

Back in the 00s when dawg nation was most disgruntled after 25 years of pretty mediocre football 1990-2015 their more aggressive fan base came up with slogan “Disney dawgs” and boy was it catchy….. and with merit they seemed to go 8-3,9-3, 8-4 a lot and when they did manage to go 10-1 like in 2002 they’d choke against the worst gator team in 13 years. Yet a certain segment of that fan base outwardly cheered on ray Goff, Jim Donnan, mark reicht and would defend all their subtle mistakes with red and black passion. They’d show up in full force for every outback and citrus bowl they’d go to , which was A LOT…… would tell fellow Georgia fans who wanted more complained about the coaching and the recruiting about the administrative support …. Ect ect that they weee bad fans should always be positive suns always shining and how excited they were for the capital one citrus bowl and how they were bringing their whole family down no matter what to show off their dawg gear with pride every New Years to all the Florida theme parks before those early kick off New Year’s Day games…….

So the fans who wanted more who wanted a coach like Kirby who wanted a big time recruiting budget who wanted to stop always losing to the Florida against the Alabamas against the LSUs ect etc they’d sarcastically refer to their happy let’s go to the outback bowl lucky crowd who’d track down to Florida after every Christmas as “Disney dawgs”………… the Ned Flanders bulldog crowd if you will….

It’s just now at least one can objectively look at gator nation now and it’s sort of like late 90s Georgia it really is and the same fan divide remains. You got the foley defenders who love what the administration does going after all sports trophy’s and what not and defending the football program how it recruits how it spends money and resources how each team is doing ect ect and then you got your fans and boosters who want to go back to the 90s gators who went all out in football and stuff . Who are not happy with recruiting with administration commitment ect ect

I just thought it was appropriate to pay homage to those Disney dawgs because basically that’s become Disney gators. Let’s not forget even those last few New Years 6 bowls like bcs era those are all citrus, outback , gator bowl teams let’s be honest it’s a Orlando bowl program even in its current better years like last. It’s very much Disney bowl all the way

And there’s another thread, to boot!

The Cocktail Party can’t get here soon enough.

There is a prophet in Florida and they will not listen.
Almost every post/response to his diatribe is negative towards it. It would seem that Florida fans are still in denial of the condition of their program. I hope it drags on for a long, long time.

Kentucky is good and I have some concerns.
Levis is the real deal. Not that I can affect the game, but we’d better have our game face on.
    Inner Munson ya know.

    With all that said…….#FTMF.

If Levis can stand in the pocket and deliver strikes with our rush… Well then more power to him because that is what it will take.

In SEC games not against LSU, Levis has gone 32-57 for 368 yards with 2 TDs and 3 INTs.

I would have more concerned with past teams. This team seems to be a VERY focused mature bunch that has it’s eye firmly on the ultimate prize. I am very glad that KY kicked LSU’s ass, because that will help them focus even more on a quality opponent. Never say never, but I don’t see this team “playing down” to anyone. Not saying that they can’t get beat Just saying they won’t “lose” a game themselves, the other team will have to play out of it’s mind (and have some very lucky bounces) to beat them.

I agree. And the difference is leadership. Some teams just feel different. The 2017 bunch did. This one does and even more so. I don’t know what was wrong on that 2018 team but something felt off.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that, as in 2017, a handful of leaders who could have gone to the NFL decided to come back and try to handle some unfinished business, and we seem to be focused and handling our business?

Yeah I would imagine so. Team leaders have to be established naturally. That year Nick and Sony were the unquestioned leaders on with R and Lorenzo Carter and John Atkins being on the defense. This year we’ve got Zeus on offense and Nakobe and Jordan Davis and Quay Walker on defense. Probably the difference in being pretty good and what we’ve got now.

Furthermore, at least, 75% of these guys were there for last year when everyone got beat up, bullied and injured by Kentucky which led directly to losing against UF in the next game.

If they don’t remember that, you best believe Kirby does.

There was a several-years battle in this very comment thread between the 2 factions. The term was used a lot here in the back and forth…

I’ve actually forgotten the derogatory term for those of us who wanted Richt out. At least, I think there was one.

I was a DD for a good long while.
Moving a fanbase from loyalty for a great man like Coach Richt is a tough thing to do. He was here a long time and was a class act all the way, and still is today. My loyalty to him was based on love and emotion. The Disney part was my unfounded belief that he would still pull a NC out of his hat. The situation is MFstan is very different. Mullen hasn’t been there that long. He’s no CMR when it comes to classy behavior. I doubt he’s dedicated enough to pay assistants bonuses out of his own pocket as CMR once did, and he’s embarrassed the UF a couple of times (that’s hard to do!). But while CDM isn’t as loveable as CMR, he’s not the Devil. He still has a lot of support, but it won’t be nearly as solid and persistent as CMR’s was. CMR deserved it. He loved the UGA and his players and fans and we all knew it. Mullens is on a short leash. That first domino is leaning and once it falls over, the rest are going to tumble pretty fast.

I had a similar attitude, OUD. I figured it was simply a matter of time when the lightning would hit the bottle for CMR and he would close the cap on it. Even after 2012 when it became apparent that a more diligent approach was necessary to win the SEC I was against replacing Richt as I feared the Dawgs would regress to Vols dumpster fire status under Mcgarity’s uninspired leadership.
I’m glad I was wrong as Kirby got it going on. Everything is coming up Dawgs.

      • I’ve been reading this blog regularly since 2016, I think. I don’t remember seeing it…. so maybe once Richt was gone folks quit using it?

It was a common and persistent term for a long time.
Also was “Drinking the Cool aid”. Use to describe dreamers (like me) that were naively embracing hope.
CMR’s tenure wasn’t a disaster. Far from it. But it had plateaued and seemed hopelessly stalled.
          Things worked out.
God, bless CMR, Katherayn and their family!

I think you and quite a few other fans became more Richt fans (disciples really) than Georgia fans. He was great his first 5 or so years and a huge number of fans couldn’t accept that he wasn’t the same coach after that.

I always wondered, still do actually, if Katherine’s cancer didn’t take the passion for coaching football from him.

I was a Disney dawg, too, and maybe I still am, but I also know Disney swallows up everything in their path until no one can find joy anywhere else, so maybe that’s the kind of Disney Dawg I am now.

  8. I coined some terms to describe what they’re going through. Feel free to add to the lexicon. Richtcruiting- making your class good by having a bunch 3*’s that inflate the ranking even though you only have a few elite prospects. See the 2011 Dreamteam and 2013 classes for examples. This leads to a Richtian Cycle- a 5 year time interval in which your team nearly wins it all at the start and creates hype for year 2 onward. See 2002-2007,2007-2012,2012-2017. Whether we are currently in one remains to be seen. This in turn leads to a phenomenon called Richtitis in which your team falls woefully short the next year and the years after but you keep remembering the occasional really good year and tell yourself, “next year. We’ll get it then”. Next thing you know, 15 years have passed and you’re thankful there’s more to life than football.

Richt turned us into South Carolina after 2007. The Georgia fan base was perpetually saying “if only” and “wait til next year”, exactly like the chicken fan base had been doing for decades. He recruited well enough to keep us in the top 10 but not good enough to really give us talented depth across all positions. Most of his classes would have a handful of 4 and 5 stars at skill positions and mostly 3 stars to round things out. There was always some huge hole in the roster where one position group would be weak.

Good lord this guy needs to learn some punctuation. Here’s a tip: read what you write before you hit that little “post” button. If you can’t understand it, there’s a solid chance your target audience can’t either. But we are talking about a gator fan, so my expectations could be a tad high.

Meh, Florida basically has just a 20 year period (1990 to around 2009) of any relevance in football. Granted, most programs would gladly take 3 nattys and 8 conference championships in such a short period. But it took having 2 of the 3 best coaches of the last 40 years to achieve that. And the second coach is such a morally bankrupt POS that the program is still seeing some residual effect of such selling out and looking the other way for success.
