In response to the news that Va. Tech is canning Justin Fuente now, instead of waiting another month to get a reduced buyout, David Hale reminds us why ADs aren’t nearly as smart as they believe they are.
And likely to be getting richer.

There are, generously, maybe a dozen truly difference maker coaches out there.
⬇️
There will prob be a dozen good jobs open.
⬇️
Most/all of the dozen great coaches already have jobs.
⬇️
Many of the schools hiring now will be doing it again in 3-4 years.

“... Shoot, why does anybody who’s ever won something do it again? Because it’s cool. So, let’s go do it again. Let’s see if we’ve got what it takes.” -- Stetson Bennett, The Athletic, 3/22/22
None of these guys should spend time at the poker table. They are transparent as a summer day is long.

Does VaTech go back to a Beamer?

My first thought this morning was that SoCar could be looking for yet another new coach soon.

When the slightest rumor of Beamer to VT begins to surface Beamer will be offered a nice raise and extension from USC.

Actually after a quick Google, Fuente making 1.5x of Beamer. Scar might have to prove they really believe in him. Tough spot for the cocks.

He said today that he loves SC, it is now home, blah, blah, blah when asked about the Va Tech opening. We’ll see if that is still his tune after the South Carolina/Clemson game on the 27th (especially if South Carolina doesn’t beat Auburn or Clemson, both night games at home, to get bowl eligible).

VA Tech would be stupid to hire anyone but Dan Lanning. He can build them back-up with much better recruiting than they’re getting now and with a defense-first mentality that they would love in Blacksburg. Add in a wide-open offense (all of Kirby’s departed assistants seem to like wide-open, fast moving offenses much more than their old boss) and in two years VA Tech will be back at the top of their division.
I don’t want to lose Lanning, but if we were to lose him, now is better than later while either Schuman or Boom are still here to take over the defense.

This is the first of the openings that concerns me about Lanning. Plus, with Fuente being an offensive guy, the tendency would be to hire a defensive coach.
Saving grace may be that their problems are perceived as offensive.

This along with the resurgence of defense in college football. UGA, OK State, Baylor, Michigan, Cincy and others are all getting it done with defense first (and good but not high flying offenses). Even Miss and Miss State have rediscovered defense. Would not be surprised at all to see a run on DC’s to HC vs the previous OC’s. Everything goes in cycles.

Lanning ain’t leaving UGA for Va Tech.

Kirby in Lanning’s ear “look at what we have here, the players, their belief—2 years from now you can get any job—any ****ing job for a bunch of money…you can take your pick and go there for life! (Michigan seems a good fit) Waiting works. Look at me!”
…and Sexton is rich already.

What has Virginia Tech ever accomplished besides the high end of mediocrity when they didn’t have a quarterback named Mike Vick? Why would someone automatically assume you can recruit players there? The kids you’re recruiting didn’t see Vick play in college and they also might be too young to remember him with the Falcons – what are you selling at VA Tech that they’re buying? I agree Lanning is a great recruiter, but I don’t agree that this is the job I’d be chasing if I were him.

Beamer ball was fun to watch though…Special Teams as a focus was novel! Sure Ron Mexico helped, but that is pretty good recruiting ground…

I wonder if he would take it? They’re not that rich; but they are in the Coastal which is ripe for domination.

I wonder if any of the ADs have actually done any math to support when to fire or retain a coach. Like looking at the cost of the buyout if you fire someone vs. the estimated loss in ticket sales and other revenue (and booster contributions) if you keep them. I doubt any of them have actually taken the time to do that, but it might make for an interesting exercise. Obviously the on-field results have to matter too, but I’m guessing that winning is more lucrative than losing.

I remember when we had empty seats (the whole section type of thing) in the upper level (no 600 levels then) at Sanford under Goff — against Auburn.
That was the end. UGA had to make a move when ticket sales suffered.

You need to start with have they done any actual math when they offer the extension?
I think USC firing Muschamp and paying him almost $13 million to be part of a rivals coaching staff all so they could Hire Shane Beamer who had zero interest from other schools. Don’t get me wrong, I think Beamer is a solid hire for USC, but they could have fired BOOM in October of this season, hired Beamer, and used that $13 million on an elite staff.
Saying all of that ^, do I think they run any actual numbers before firing? Hell no.

Somewhat surprising to me. After two weeks they were ranked 15th though their win over top 10 UNC to start the season turned out to be not as great as originally thought. The three game stretch of losses at home in October to Notre Dame (by 3), Pitt, and Syracuse (by 5) must have sealed his fate. I guess my surprise is more that this is happening now at 5-5 with winnable games against Miami and Virginia left.

Jimmy never loses. Get hired? He wins. Get fired? He wins. Get considered for another position and use that for leverage to get a raise? Jimmy wins again. The only thing that can keep Jimmy from winning is intelligence. I guess there are supply chain issues with that too.

You don’t need intelligence when playing with OPM (other people’s money).
You only need intelligence when you have skin in the game.

When your boosters order you to fire the coach and will foot any expenses, you don’t have to be smart, just obedient.

I don’t think the Good Beamer years there were that good and that they are going to be firing coaches often if they think that they will win the ACC IF FSU gets better and Clemson continues apace under Dabo. That is not to say that Fuente was a good fit there. I think he tried to get the Baylor job a few years ago and that coupled with their poor play made him a “dead man walking.” Anyway glad we got Kirby and Go DAWGS!

I don’t t think the state legislature would let VT leave UVA behind, but by pretty much any measure, they would have been a better fit than Missouri in 2012.
Getting stuck in no man’s land in the ACC killed that program.

Beamer ain’t leaving Carolina. He just got there. Just refurbished a house. Kids are settled in just now. Having some inside knowledge of the program now that my son will be going to Carolina to play football, I would be shocked. Money talks and all that but I would be floored. My 2 cents…
