Just keepin’ it real

Mike Griffith has some thoughts about Georgia’s starting quarterback I’ll just leave here without comment.

I think people that watched that game now look at Stetson Bennett and go this guy isn’t that great. I had somebody say well, you know, Tee Martin came in after Peyton Manning. I said no, no, no, no, no, Stetson Bennett is not Tee Martin. (laughs) You’ve got this wrong. That’s not a good comparison.

I’m not saying he can’t be the quarterback of a national championship team. There’s actually people saying that he should be in the Heisman Trophy discussion. I’m just looking at it and this guy threw four passes in the Spring Game and was the third string quarterback. He was the third string quarterback going into Fall Drills. He was the third string quarterback coming out of Fall Drills. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what other SEC team he would start for. So I guess if you want to give him credit for seeing it through sticking around Georgia and being a good guy, he’s a cool guy, everybody likes him. But are his talents really in line with other SEC quarterbacks we see? I’m not sure. I mean, like I said, he’s behind a great offensive line, James Cook obviously was a pretty good running back, some of those catches the receivers made.

I’m just trying to be real here. I’m not trying to be a hater. And I get it, this kinda goes to the quarterback gets too much credit and too much blame thing. Let’s not make Stetson Bennett anymore than he really is. He’s a crafty little quarterback with good mobility but he’s got a pop gun arm. He’s got a hell of an offensive coordinator that can scheme ya and create open guys.

Again, if Georgia could trade Stetson Bennett for Hendon Hooker, if they were being honest, (chuckles) they’d do it in a split second. I mean, look at the dynamics Hooker brings. Think about how many times he shook off sacks, how big that arm is, (laughs) that is one heck of a quarterback there at Tennessee.

Well, okay, one thing — when members of the press do that “I’m just trying to be real here. I’m not trying to be a hater.” thing…  Sigh.

  2. I’m at the “I don’t give a darn” about who starts at QB now. It’s clear that SBIV’s play has convinced Kirby and Monken to ride him as far as possible. I trust what they see in practice and with the team around him that he gives them the best chance to win. He is the 4th most talented QB on the roster, period. Yes, stars matter.

The real reason for my post is Mike Griffith. He spent his entire career with his head up Phat Phil’s wide pumpkin @$$ in Knoxville. Why he covers Georgia is beyond me.

Because DawgNation/Cox Media is the only company that will pay him, so he does what he must to pay the bills.

Also, someone has to fill the role of “COX Media Official Troll to UGA Fans” once filled by Terrence Moore, Jeff Schultz, and Mark Bradley.

Georgia seems like it has the most antagonistic beat writers for a team at its level. I’m not saying they ought to be cheerleaders but this kind of shit seems to happen a lot and it’s hard to understand why they would feel so compelled. I always thought with Richt they just thought he was too nice. Kirby is definitely not too nice and they do the same thing to him. He talks to them like they’re idiots too which is hilarious.

        • For me, stars matter a whole lot as a Freshman. You rarely find a 3 or less star who is going to contribute a whole lot as a Freshman on a Playoff Caliber squad if there haven’t been a rash of injuries or similar circumstances…

But after 3-5 years of college football, talking about a player’s star rating is silly. Star ratings are projections. After years of development, you don’t look at projections – you look at production.

Bennett was a 2* coming out of high school… but after 4 years in college, his production is in the top 5 in efficiency. That’s development. Time for people to forget his humble beginnings and accept him for what he is – QB1.

Griffith is a clown doing a schtick and he mostly just likes to hear himself talk while he does his best Alex Jones voice. It makes him look bad to say things like this, but he makes some interesting points.

What other SEC team would Bennett start for? Maybe Vandy or USC given injuries. I love Stetson and everything he’s had to overcome to get where he is, but I doubt there is a fan or coach in Knoxville today who would trade Hooker for Bennett despite Saturday’s result.

LSU beats Bama with Bennett instead of Johnson.

A&M beats Ole Miss with Bennett instead of Calzada.

Auburn wins 2 more games with Bennett instead of “bad” Bo.

Look, in an alternate universe where Daniels doesn’t get hurt, overcompensate, and mess up his mechanics (apparently), I think he would be lighting this offense up. But that is not the universe we are in. Bennett has proven himself to be an SEC QB, regardless of his NFL measurables. He got this. Monkey got this.

I don’t agree with any of those examples, and there is a strong case to be made that all of those teams would have worse records if they replaced their starters with Stetson.

But all that might not matter in the end because we have Monken and the defense.

There’s a strong case to be made about lots of things, but if you look at the throws and runs Bennett has made vs what Nix has done, it’s plain to see that Bennett is what Barners wish Nix was.

Yeah, I did. And I’ve watched just about every other game, too. Have you seen the number of games Nix has cost them? Or some of the throws he made? Bennett is what they want him to be, and if Bennett was making these throws for the Barn or Alabama, people would be asking why Daniels was ever even the starter.

Your point about Calzada is likely true. That kid is so beat up right now, though, I don’t know if that’s fair.

Is Daniels better? Probably so. Is he better for the team or our needs right now? I don’t know. I do believe, though, that barring a natty, Kirby is gonna get questioned about this forever, and I’m not sure that’s fair.

Quarterback personnel decisions have become a running theme. If Georgia loses Bennett better play a perfect game otherwise the criticism will continue all off-season. Honestly if Georgia loses with Bennett the criticism will continue regardless of how well he plays whether it’s fair or not.

Put Bennett behind Auburn’s abysmal offensive line with their mediocre receiving corps and you’ve got yourself a formula for epic failure.

The glaring difference between Nix and Bennett (aside from obvious talent) is Bennett is never asked to win a game for Georgia. Whereas Nix has had to shoulder the load for Auburn pretty much every game. Sometimes he’s successful, often he is not.

Nix passed for 377 at a 65% clip with 2 TDs and 0 ints in the Miss St loss. If you honestly believe Bennett plays better and wins that game for Auburn with their defense giving up 40 straight then I suppose we’ll have to respectfully agree to disagree.

    • That made me throw up a little. I honestly think with Stetson it’s all optics. For some people, he just doesn’t LOOK like a quarterback and he never will. I say that based on something that none other than my brother said last week during the Tennessee game. He prefaced it with, “this might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever said (you have no idea the sample size we’re drawing from), but, there’s just something about Stetson that..I love the story, I love the guy, I love the loyalty, and in my head I KNOW he’s our best option right now. But when he screws up, I just look at him and this blind rage takes over and I’m like WHY IS THIS GUY OUR QUARTERBACK?!!!”

I think part of it is he isn’t super serious all the time. He smiles. Often after making a mistake. It’s like the Andruw Jones factor. Some people are offended by players who don’t take it as “serious” as they do. Unless they look the part. And I also think a lot of the fanbase is projecting our season’s presumed future sudden unscheduled disassembly – and assume it will have something to do with him.

It’s the most Georgia way to water down our enjoyment of what should be a magical season. But it’s a choice. Stetson obviously has the team and his coach and most of us. Let the haters write bad prose…

Myself? I’m much more concerned about whoever the second string quarterback at Alabama is.

Apparently, he’s making a career of slagging off Stetson Bennett on opponents’ radio stations. I heard him do the same thing the week of the Florida game. Not that it matters, but Bennett would probably start at Vandy, Kentucky, and South Carolina, and he’s certainly outplayed the guys at Missouri, Florida, A&M, Auburn and LSU. The only line Mike forgot was. The classic Some say troll troll click here please now.

Clearly the two guys that matter believe Bennett’s the best option. He’s not the same guy who played last year. Kirby wants his QB to do no harm don’t turn the ball over. I think that’s why he now holds the ball and attempts to only throw passes that he believes won’t get picked off if he misses. He’s no longer the gun slinger he once was. He’s trying to be what Kirby wants. Kirby has watched Bama win NC’s with less at the position. There is no one that wants to bring a National Championship back to Athens more than Kirby Smart. Given his age and work ethic I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. He’s creating the Golden age of Georgia football now enjoy the ride.

The media is so desperate to get clicks they say and right anything. It’s get clicks or die in their world.

Yup… We live in a world of where you are told you have to pick. You are not allowed to root for Georgia’s starting QB, even if you believe the guy not playing is the better QB.

The flip side is, that you shouldn’t beat up the starting QB, just because you believe the other guy is better.

I believe JT is the better option, I think he sees the field better, I think he has better command of the offense and I think he is more clutch than Bennett. But that doesn’t mean I do not appreciate how well Bennett has played and is a big factor as to why Georgia remains undefeated.

    • The answer to that, as in every hypothetical you could throw at me, would be whoever gives us the best chance to win, on that drive. So it depends on the opponent. One thing that people absolutely do not give Stetson credit for is his ability to move around and he almost never takes a sack. I like JT if completing passes and moving the sticks is all we need. But JT is a statue. If that game you mention is against Alabama, I want Stetson, absolutely. He has a dimension to his game JT does not and he’s playing pretty confident. I mean, all he’s doing is running the fourth best offense in the country. That’s more than Fromm, or Aaron Murray or Stafford or Eason ever did. What more does he have to do?

A 2 min drill before a half with a lead, vs useles Fighting Mustards of Tennessee ‘s tired garbage D, vs team XYZ in the 4th Quarter Natty game to come from behind is a completely different scenario in terms of mindset, urgency, throws needed & the stakes at hand, etc.. So it is interesting to understand what QB is better to have prepared in case that scenario happens regardless of the team. The CFP team will likely have a much better D than everyone we will have played by then. Bama’s D is ranked 34th in the nation FWIW.

Todd Monken isn’t the offensive coordinator at any of those other schools, he’s the offensive coordinator at Georgia. It’s maddening to watch him miss the throw to Bowers that is a walk in TD, but then he follows it up with an across the body, on the run, strike to AD on 2nd and 20. His legs are also clearly a huge asset; although, if he could read a defense Better, he wouldn’t need them quite as often.

Regardless, he’s the guy Monken and Kirby thinks gives us the best chance to win, so I’m all aboard the Bennett train from now until they decide someone else is better.

I know that pass looked impressive, but it was the sort of risky play that could easily of led to us going into half tied at 17. If that LB tips that thing, and he almost did, its going the other way. If Stet almost always made the right play but had some physical limitations, that’s ok. If he had the physical skills to the point where you can survive a mental error here and there, that’s also ok. Stet rides the line between both physically limited and “wtf was that?” just a tad beyond my own comfort level.

I just wish he’d make the easy plays, the lay ups, and leave the hero plays alone. Its those hero play attempts against better, more prepared, well coached talent that can cost you everything.

If we’re going to ride defense, run game and get just enough out of 13’s feet and arm, fine, but we have to avoid the big fuck ups.

That play was so close to a big fuck up.

Coaches never ever say: “that worked there, but don’t ever, ever do it again,” amirite?

If your qb rolls right and chucks it across his body and the safety whiffs on the pick and your wr grabs the tip for a td the coaches will usually say “great job!” do that some more! They’ll even make it a new play call. After all, safety’s can’t catch. That’s why they’re on defense.

Have you ever seen a KO returner drop the ball and the coverage team relaxes and the guy picks it up for a big gain or even a TD? I have.

The smart coach tells his guy to never catch the ball. Let it bounce off your chest. In fact, pro tip here, just put in a guy who can’t even catch it to begin with! Then you’re ahead of the game.

  30. I’ve been a pretty big proponent of Bennett over the season.. mainly it comes from “If Kirby says he’s the guy, he’s the guy” but it also comes a little from the “I honestly don’t see what everyone else sees in Daniels” side.

Now, that’s not to claim Daniels isn’t a talented quarterback – he certainly is… but people talk about our offense being far-and-away better with him, and I’m just not sure that’s true. Kirby and Todd seem to believe that, at this point in their development, Bennett’s doing the better job.

But I think I’ve figured it out. It’s emotion. Many Dawgfans are simply emotionally tied to two things. 1) Bennett didn’t beat AL last year (they give him a pass for FL because he got hurt). 2) JT “saved the season”. So, they walked into 2021 with all these hopes and dreams of JT dominating the landscape with his flashy Toolset, and they feel something’s been stolen from them. And, they fear Stet will let them down again.

Still, I didn’t recall all that amazing gloss from last season, and against the one really good defense JT faced this season, he produced 3 points and 1 interception (again, understanding he was hurt). So, last night I watched every pass attempt that JT threw in 2020.

I want the JT peeps to watch it. In it, you’ll see all the things you hate about Stetson. You’ll see underthrows that prevent touchdowns. You’ll see “throws that woulda been picks against Alabama”. You’ll see “holding the ball too long.” You’ll see “taking too many sacks.” You’ll see guys running open that JT “doesn’t see.”

In short, you’ll see college quarterback play. Quarterback Play where you overlook the warts, because the promise of something better was in your heart and mind. But here we stand a year later, and JT has been hurt for much of the year. Meanwhile, Stetson has received the lion share of meaningful reps in games and in practice, and is a drastically better quarterback than he was as a result. (Notice, I say better than HE was, not better than Daniels is).

Anyway, spend 30 minutes watching this and maybe you’ll have a slightly different perspective about the current drama. Or at the very least, relive the four games that made Daniels a legend in the UGA Fanbase’s collective brain. It’s always nice watching the score when you know the ending.

Well, I actually like Mike and he promotes the Dawgs on Finebaum regularly.
Dioes not mean I agree with all of his opinions.
He was one of the first to recognize that Mullen was a clown and said so.
I hope that Bennett will get it done.

  33. We never got to see Eason. Fromm performed a miracle and so we never got to really see Fields. 2020 was a mess and we never even saw our starting QB. We get a little taste of Daniels and then he goes out. Kirby has a couple of flameouts in the QB room too. So much of our fan base is correct in watching Heisman caliber QBs win the NC and left thinking how short we are in that department. A great Daniels…if there is such a thing…we just don’t know yet…would calm our nerves and scare opposing DCs more. But we got Stetson. He’s our Belue and our D is Herschel. It’s probably how we’re going to win this thing. Enjoy the ride.

He can’t talk that way about or QB! Only we can talk that way about our QB. And FTMF.

Stetson threw a football 62 yards in the air to hit Arian Smith in stride during the UAB game. That’s about 20 yards further than I ever saw Jake Fromm throw it, and further than I ever saw Aaron Murray throw the ball. Anyone in the press who says he has a pop gun arm should be fired.

I had to wash beer of my tv screen during the Auburn game when Aaron Murray said Stetson underthrew McConkey on the first deep ball to him, that ball was throw 10 yards further than Aaron could every throw it, and my last memory of Murray was him underthrowing a wide open Chris Connelly by 15 yards at the end of the first half of the 2012 SECC.

I have a feeling we’re going to see a LOT of designed running plays for Stetson at Atlanta in a few weeks.

I predict Bama will rush four and squeeze the pocket forcing Bennett to throw or flee. They’ll be taught to maintain their lanes and throw their hands up. They’ll also have a spy on Bennett if he does decide to roll out.

Prediction: lots of batted passes that make this a close game.

I hope they do. We’ll run 12 personnel all day and they’ll have no idea whether we’re going to run the ball or throw it pre-snap from most down & distance situations.

That only works if we can’t run the ball OR we get behind the chains in obvious passing downs. In prior match ups vs. bama, we’ve been great at having a plan, scoring points early and making them chase us. Where we’ve failed is when they’ve made their adjustments, our bag of tricks is empty, they’ve seen all our surprises and we need to own the LOS and win the day.

      Where I really worry is:

Do we ever have to chase them like last year? Do we get down by 10 or more and Stet tries to do more than he can and he turns adversity into disaster?

      My biggest hopes are:

This defense won’t be denied and we just beat the living fuck out of Young. He can’t run, throw or breath. They do that and I can play qb and get the W.
Barring that we make the switch in time so that we can trade scores with them and hope to finish on top in the end.

The fact that we have CSU and Tech and they have have two SEC West games should really be to our advantage. We ought to be the fresher, more focused, dialed in team come 12/4. I damn well know we’re hungrier.

I’ve seen that Vegas says we’re only laying 3. I know that’s probably artificially deflated by insane bammers and a long built rep by .5 to 1.5 but that’s still ominous. The expectations are that we ain’t that far apart. I would have thought 5.5 or more would be the opening line.

      Gonna be a long 17 days….

All Bennett does is WIN. I don’t care if it’s ugly, if the stats are bad, if he misses open receivers, or any other crap some idiots complain about. HE WINS!
