Maybe one day we can recruit one and play him.

He had a bad game, but our defense was the problem.
It’s as if Lanning didn’t see the Iron Bowl.

      • I said on the game day thread that the 1st half defensive strategy that looked like the f-ing 1st half of the Rose Bowl lost the game and that this offense especially with SBIV isn’t built to come back.

      • Stetson isn’t why we lost. But he is why when the defense finally got down stops we couldn’t get in the endzone and tighten it up.

Stetson Bennett is about 75% about why we lost.

Great QB beats great defense. We had a great QB sitting on the bench, and Kirby had a month to get him ready. To knock off the rust. To start him against Charleston Southern and Tech and Kirby refused to do it.

Kirby didn’t learn that lesson from 2019, it seems, where a great QB destroyed our defense, or in 2020 when two great QBs destroyed our defense.

Kirby didn’t learn. He refuses to learn. That’s our truth.

We don’t have a great QB on the roster. Unless you just decide that based on recruiting rankings instead of game performances.

No, it happened. He put up good numbers against mediocre teams and had 3 turnovers in an uneven performance in a post-season game. Nothing distinguishable from Stetson this year.

I’m fine if we go to JT for our next game. But to pretend that there’s this obvious superstar on our bench and Kirby is just too stupid to realize it is a real stretch.

So watch him play. His throws are more accurate. He doesn’t freak out when pressured. He gets the team in better plays by reading the defense. Stetson in pressure situations gets panicky and last night he was blaming his receivers when his throws weren’t that great. He still misses wide open receivers as well. Look at their third down conversion rate and Stetson numbers in that situation. They are pretty poorly. That’s when a QB has it all on him and Stetson is average at best.

Dude, Stetson ain’t the answer. But we don’t have TBrady or ARogers sitting in that bench ready to take over. Why you keep saying we do is baffling.

We don’t know what we have on the bench because he didn’t play. Maybe JT isn’t the answer but he’s a damn chance. Stetson just isn’t a catch up QB.

Do you think Stetson will ever play a down in the NFL? JT Daniels is still projected to be drafted in early rounds for the NFL? I think that’s the point. No one is saying his is Brady or Rodgers.

Maybe Stetson didn’t totally lose it but he didn’t give us the best chance to win!! In today CFB you will get into shootout every now and then. Alabama vs Ole Miss?? JT Daniels much more likely to win shoot out than Bennet. Look at each QBs third down conversion rate.

        • I have a feeling Saban knew they were going to win because Bennett wasn’t going to score enough to beat them. Lanning and Kirby made it easy with that joke of a defensive strategy in the 1st half.

      • You apparently haven’t been reading what I’ve been saying. The defense let us down in the 1st half and the first drive of the 2nd half. The offense is not built for a comeback with SBIV at the controls especially given he has gotten very little help from an explosive run game. His turnovers were absolutely devastating.

            And there it is.
If the players saw Daniels outplaying Bennett in practice it would have come out. I don’t know why Daniels can’t claim the job. It sure as hell is not because both Kirby and Monken have something against JT or want to lose to Bama.

It’s like these people think this has taken place at practice, Monken-Kirby I think we have to start JT. I really think he gives us the best chan… Kirby-Stop right there, Todd. That is NOT going to happen. Not under any circumstances. Stetson is my boy so he starts. Don’t ever bring it up again.

But he did claim the job before the season began, much like Eason. Kirby’s comfort zone is QB’s that basically take snaps and “manage” games. That’ll win you 9-11 games a year with Kirby’s recruiting expertise. In the end we have a souped up Mark Richt that cannot get out of his stubbornness. He likely will get another chance in the next month, but the fact that he didn’t get Daniels meaningful snaps in those last 4 games is the epitome of Kirby’s psyche.

Where you at practice watching JT?

Everyone is forgetting pregame against Clemson. JT granting an interview to discuss his mental health issues and continuing therapy.
For a reason we don’t know and no sane coach comes out and says in a presser this kid has issues. Many assume the 2020 JT is ready to go. I don’t think Monken believes he is. Last Olympics we saw several top athletes drop out due to personal not physical issues. It’s a new world for these kids with pressure and opportunities we could never dream of at their age.

Stetson can’t win you a game in a shootout. I’ll say that much. That’s not what he does. That touchdown he threw to Pickins was just about perfect. He made a lot of really good throws. He deserves criticism for the picks he threw. That is absolutely on him. But to jump past the horrible game from the defense straight to Stetson just shows an agenda. Jordan Davis was getting doubled and there was still no pressure on Young.

As a fan it’s easy to assume based on last years JT he is the best option today. I get that and have hoped at some point he would step up and claim the job.

Only those people at practice each week really know. None of us fans really know what JT capable of right now I’ll never believe Monken was forced to play his second best QB option.

            • JT claimed the job and then got hurt. He came back and played well against Vandy and then got hurt again. I am convinced the more I think about it that this became a Fromm/Eason thing. We were winning, and Kirby didn’t want to mess with the team’s chemistry – the exact same thing he did last year with SBIV. When we ran into a team that could make us play from behind, we had no answer. Fromm had Nick and Sony with a good offensive line to help him (and it didn’t hurt that he was extremely talented as well).

Why is it some of y’all and Kirby still refuse to learn this lesson?

Stetson is not the guy who can beat the great teams. He’s not the guy who can go stride for stride with the great QBs, to bail out our defense, as opposed to our defense bailing his scrub ass out like they did in Jacksonville.

Yeah, that’s not true either. Now you’re just straight lying. Most of y’all’s assumptions about me are funny enough, but come on man, don’t lie. Just because we think differently doesn’t mean we both don’t love the same team and want them to win.

How many times did I have to say I wanted to be wrong about Stetson Bennett? How many times do I have to say that I don’t want to be right tonight, I want to be celebrating a win, not suffering again.

You don’t like me? Fine. I don’t care one way or another. But to keep on acting like I wanted to lose so I could be right is a lie. It’s a lie. I’m sorry I can’t keep my mouth shut when I see Kirby keep making stupid decisions that I know will hurt the team down the line. I wish I could. YOU wish I could. But I can’t, and I’m sorry about that.

Having people “congratulate” me here tonight for being right all season about Bennett brings me no comfort. It’s bitter. It’s ash in my mouth. It’s agony because the Dawgs lost when we didn’t have to lose if Kirby made better choices. I fucking hate it.

I hate it, man. I just want us to win. I don’t care if it’s by one point or 20. I just want to win. Fuck. I just want to win.

Maybe. Another thought would be that the offensive line isn’t quite as good as we would want and SBIV’s legs allow plays to extend. If JT was in last night, he might have been sacked 5-7 times.

If I’d asked you how about that “walk on” at the end of the first quarter you’d have be so flowery in his praises. Perhaps former walk on loses control of offensive line? Yes, he failed to excute some calls by Monken and it cost us but he looked good when we got to tie game. The key to our loss is the defense which obviously spent the last week reading their reviews. With a couple of exceptions, the defense was played straight up by the Bama offensive line..one on one. But the final nail in our championship coffin was a quarterback who played lights out and hit everybody he threw at. Young deserves the Heisman if for nothing else than taking Auburn and Georgia’s defenses apart. A shoutout to his receivers who caught just about everything he threw. It will show up in the playoffs what Georgia really is or did we play anybody Pawwwwl?

      • Did he play better than he did against Alabama? Yes. He also made a lot of the same mistakes he did last year in Tuscaloosa. Once we were down by 2 scores, I knew we weren’t coming back without help.

Once again, read what I wrote. The defense lost the game in the 1st half with the failure to get pressure on Young.

I only have to point to Green’s, Murray’s, and Fromm’s NFL careers to put your qb qualifying skills to rest. And, there are career NFL backups who you never heard of. We’re in the NCAA/SEC football business and you use your best weapon when you choose. Make too many mistakes in judgement and you become a Coach Hermann, Mullen, Fuentes, or Obegeron. (forgive spelling). Kirby in the last six years has been the Messiah that the fans have longed for…do you doubt his coaching ability..that includes his chosen assistants? It’s a tough game and it takes a tough coach to be a success. Saben is th e GOAT…he wins more with his talent than anyone else. He understands you win some, you lose some with what you have. And, you don’t listen to armchair qbs to make it all work. So chill guys…we’ve got a playoff to win!

Plus, the 11 point loss vs Cincinnati isn’t appreciably worse than our 17 point loss vs Alabama (especially given the committees skepticism on group of 5 teams in general). The difference between Saban and Kirby is that when Tua wasn’t getting it done, Nick was willing to bring in Jalen Hurts for the win. That doesn’t excuse the porous defense, but at least if you’re answering scores with scores you have a chance. When you don’t do that you have no chance.

        Here’s a fact…There’s a damn good reason why JT isn’t playing.
Just because these know it alls want to pretend they have superior knowledge to CKS and Monken doesn’t change that fact.
There’s a damn good reason JT doesn’t play. If CKS had someone that could come in and do better he’d play them

          What’s the damn good reason?

What is it? All I see is a scrub game manager who will never lead us to where we need to go while Kirby lets his best QB sit on the bench. After playing a quarter against Mizzou, Kirby didn’t let him knock of rust against other teams. He stuck with HIS guy.

Why? What is this REASON some of y’all keep pointing to without zero evidence?

But but but we should stick with Bennett because, because…. The defense is lights out and we’ll never ever be in a shootout. Why would you want a QB that might give you a fighting chance when you HAVE to score to keep up.

I mean Stetson doesn’t have the upside to stretch the field but still has the downside of a QB that throws picks when the pressure is on. You would be an idiot to question Kirby for going with the low upside, high downside option.

Daniels wanted to play earlier last year after being cleared by our medical professionals, but Kirby kept him on the bench and only turned to him after the disastrous Florida game.

Daniels took some shots last season, and played like a champ.

            Kirby is the thick-headed one.

And he has been since he shut down the offense for the entire 4th quarter of the National Title Game in 2017.

He still thinks he can win by playing not to lose.

I understand not wanting to speculate about a player; I did that here and regretted it almost instantly.

I’d like to hear your thoughts, though. Y’all think I’m this asshole who can’t let things go, and maybe I am, maybe I am, but there’s a reason why: Because what I think about this is rationally-backed up by the evidence we have before us. What I think is logical based on what we know and what keeps happening.

I hate that I’ve been right about Bennett. I hate that he did exactly what I said he would do in this game. I want to win. I want to win so badly. I want Kirby to win, but right now Kirby still looks like a guy who refuses to play to win, like a coach who refuses to learn from glaring mistakes, like a man who keeps making the most easily avoidable mistakes because he can’t get out of his own stubborn way. I hate it. It eats me up inside. I don’t like being right about tonight’s game. I’m angry and upset and my stomach is in knots. This is gonna sit with me all month.

If you can change my mind, please do. You can email me your thoughts at popculturemass@gmail.com. I’d love to hear what you have to say. So I think two things. 1) I don’t think he’s healthy and 2) I think Monken thinks Stetson is the better QB for what’s going on in our receiving corp.

In truth, the only receiver on our roster taking meaningful snaps at Bama is Pickens when healthy and Bowers. That’s it. And for whatever reason, Stetson has been the man with this kind of offense. You have to admit Daniels wasn’t a world beater in a lot of his time this year.

Then the HC synthisize all of it…with his coordinators…and develops a game plan…if that plan A doesn’t work he tries plan B which has been developed beforehand and tries it. Then as some wag once said: “Shit happens”. You win some, you lose some. But these million dollar guys who make football their life work don’t let sentimentality goven their decisions. And the offensive line? This was absolutely not a great or even good game for them. They weren’t a train wreck. But there were plenty of designed runs where we needed a push tonight and didn’t get it, putting us in line get down/distance scenarios. I can go on.

If Bennett had the protection and receivers Young had tonight, we’d have lost to him. I’ll stand by that. Young is a good player. But he is beatable. Functional QBs with wide open WRs look like world beaters.

Georgia will lose the games that matter 9 times out of 10. When we win the occasional SEC championship I’ll be pleasantly surprised. The Bama OL shut down our pass rush like no other team has. We all knew that our secondary was never elite, but it was ok bc no QB ever had time to throw.

Some might view this as a bad time to post this, but what the hell:

Like your sports, love your life. It’s really that simple. Anything in life that you don’t have input or control over, you really should not be bothered by it all that much. And it’s certainly should not affect you much at all good or bad. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but when the game struck zero, I didn’t suddenly find myself in worse financial shape, in worse health, and with an unloving family and wavering faith. All those crucial things were still intact.

Your health, family, career, hobbies, financial bearing, etc are far more important than UGA football, so to place so much more importance on something you had no say over is totally misguided priorities, IMO.

Yea, the loss sucked. But you had nothing to do with it. Move on and focus on things you actually have control over. Due that ans you will be far happier. And successful.

When I love, I love hard. I love the Dawgs. I love the Braves. When they lose it hurts. I don’t know any other way.

As an FYI, I divorced the fucking Falcons. I still see them on the side sometimes, and I’ll ride or die with Matt Ryan against the constant slander and libel he faces, but 28-3 fucking broke me. I’m a Dawg. I graduated from Georgia. I’ll never be a Falcon. So the Dawgs winning or losing will always fill be with more joy or more hate than any team, even my first love the Braves.

Soneone please remind me, did Saban ever pull his QB in a championship game vs UGA? Keeping Bennett in this game was just stupidity & coaching malpractice. In an age when coaches can pull in a transfer in the blink of an eye, they should also be able to pull a player from a game. But no, not at UGA.

It’s after 0130, otherwise known as zero dark thirty, and like I said would happen, I can’t sleep. The knot in my stomach hasn’t gone away. I haven’t been able to eat anything since a few hours before the game. I’m a fucking wreck, and I wouldn’t have it any other way even though I know when I do finally pass out, the moment I wake up I’ll still feel this bad.

I love Georgia with all my heart. All my heart. Graduating a Bulldog is the second best day of my life. Walking across the Parade Deck at Parris Island remains the first, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. But I digress.

I know some of y’all don’t like me, which is really strange to me because I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I know someone y’all like me, and I appreciate that. I wish y’all were as vocal as the other group, but I’ll take your silent approval, too. I’m forceful in my opinion, but believe it or not, I can be swayed. When I have a belief that runs contrary to what we all want to be true or wish were true, I don’t want to be right. But y’all have to understand; if you love something and you see the wrong decisions being made and you know, even in your layman’s way, that there are better decisions to be made, wouldn’t it drive you a little crazy? That’s what it feels like. It’s not in me to support stupid decisions like playing Stetson Bennett and refusing to get Daniels ready by allowing him more playing time the last month and a half. I can’t support that; that’s a set of stupid decisions that I know can only end in disaster. And it did, and that also drives me a little crazy.

I’m also only operating on known variables. Some of y’all have made wild accusations about the kid’s character that do not mesh with the information we know about him; I’m not saying it’s not true, but it’s highly unlikely to be. I’m also pretty sure you got them from Rivals or Junkyard, known hives of scum and villainy. Anyway, I’m not the guy who can accept, “There must be a reason,” without actually being told what the reason is. I take one thing in my life on faith, but for everything else that doesn’t involve a man rising from the grave on the third day, I need to see the receipts. It’s just how I’m wired. Some of y’all want to trust Kirby because he’s the coach, okay, fine. That’s not me, and that I could see tonight’s outcome way back when Daniels was cleared to play but Kirby wouldn’t play him is not something to celebrate. I hate it. I’ve hated the dread and the pall it cast over the entire back half of the season. If we lose with our best players out on the field and the coaches put those best players in the best position to win but we come up short? I can live with that. What makes 2017 and 2018 so difficult is Kirby didn’t put his guys in the best position to win with his coaching decisions, and now here, he left his best player on the bench and we don’t know why. Saban pulls his previous year’s SEC Title-winning QB at halftime of the National Title Game, benching him for a freshman, and Kirby can’t be moved to bench the ineffectual try-hard guy and then never gives any indication of providing a reason why.

I hate not knowing why, because when we don’t know why we have to make intuitive leaps based the information we do have available to us, and what we know is Kirby is stubborn. We know Kirby will always revert to playing not to lose instead of playing to win, based on his past coaching decisions with regards to offense. Yada yada yada. We have to try to make the information we have fit the reality we’re suffering through, and sometimes it’s a missed fit.

We are a bunch of misfits. We come here and we talk and argue and yell and disagree and vomit our feelings about the Dawgs in digital ink all over the Senator’s blog because maybe we have nowhere else to go yet we’re compelled to share our love for Georgia in our own ways. Maybe we refuse to pay money to support certain other commenting arenas for whatever reason we have. Maybe we really can’t stand the Disney Dawgs in other places that are free. Whatever the reason, we come here because the Senator allows us to, and we’re always here first and foremost at his leisure. I’m grateful for that. I know I’m a bit of a misfit. A miss fit. A missed fit.

Regardless, I love the Dawgs. It feels like I always have, and I know I always will until a draw my last breath and hopefully beyond. If the choice were mine to make, would I avoid this constant heart break? I don’t know. All I know it’s not a choice, it’s inside of me. I can’t not love the Dawgs. I’m never going to let the Falcons hurt me again, and I swear to God if Liberty Media lets Freddie walk because they won’t give him the 6th year he deserves I may have to let the Braves go, too. But the Dawgs? They’re part of my soul. The streets of Athens I have trodden so many times are found in the bottoms of my feet. I know no sweeter sound in my life than the Chapel Bell ringing in my ears. If I close my eyes and remember the sweetest smells and tastes, it smells like coffee at Jittery Joes or the taste of pizza fresh from the oven at Little Italy’s. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Dawg, and I swear he looks like Lewis Grizzard but with Larry Munson’s voice!

It’s now after 0200. I’m exhausted. I wanted this year to be different. It’s killing me that it probably won’t be, and that Kirby is probably going to start Bennett in the Playoff if we make it. Again, I hope I’m wrong and Bennett can lead us to two playoff wins, but I just don’t see it happening. Go Dawgs!

Dawgnation had an article recently that said Daniels, or his family, can’t remember which, flew Daniels’s personal QB coach to Athens to work on JT’s mechanics. I have no information as to why JT needed that work but it is consistent with a conclusion that he wasn’t practicing well.

          Liked by 1 person

        • You hit the nail on the head … Kirby didn’t want to upset the apple cart of the team’s chemistry by reopening the QB competition late in the season. After the Florida game (when SBIV didn’t play great either), Kirby decided to let it ride. It was an absolute head-scratcher that Kirby only gave JT one series with no passing against Fech and only a couple against CS before putting in Beck. This feels so much like Fromm/Eason in 2017, but Fromm at least was a high 4-star/low 5-star himself as opposed to a former walk-on.

All of that and still the defense as a whole and both lines of scrimmage were extremely disappointing. I’ve learned not to be cautiously optimistic with a game against Alabama again.

The bill came due last night in the biggest game of the year. I hope we make the playoff, but I won’t be excited about it (I put in for tickets and almost hope that I don’t get them now). I wouldn’t be surprised for the committee to say Georgia got their chance and we don’t believe Alabama should be in the position to play Georgia twice. I won’t go to New Orleans. I may go to Atlanta if I could pick up some cheap seats.

The bama offense looked like they were just skipping over or front, Bryce young played a game ten yards downfield and on. Uga took a couple shots but didn’t have that wide ope, the entire field is always in play feel the way bama did. Maybe it’ll be different in round 2.

Sounds like we all agree that dawgs d backs laid an egg in first half.

Is it possible that bama scored enough points in first half for committee to vote them into playoff, even if we pulled Stetson for JT and came back to win.

If that’s the case then we would play bama again regardless.

And if that’s the case why would we want to give bama time against and tape on JT to prep with.

I’m sure part of it is JT is a pussy and Kirby loves Stetson. But the minute Kirby saw our D couldn’t hold them I think Kirby gave up.

Play JT and he plays well enough to get close or win and you’ve still given bama a leg up for the next game.

With all of that said, should have started JT from the get go. I’m sick of people saying the qb doesn’t have to be that good with a defense like this.

For you idiots that think Stetson did anything great last night. Receivers made great catches on shitty throws. Jt is more precise. That’s a fact and you are stupid and blind if you think otherwise.

Stetson was checking down to shitty run plays. Jt doesn’t put us in bad plays.

You can’t rely on your defense to win every game for you. We lost this game before the first snap. Stetsons a great story, but he is the equivalent of not trying.

If JT doesn’t play in playoffs then I’d rather watch Georgia basketball.

When Kirby punted rather than go for it on 4th 15, we still had time to come back. He opted to give defense more time on field against Bryce young. That was practice. He knew we’d play them again anyway.

If we have to play bama twice, I’d rather lose first game.

That said, bad game plan, wrong quarterback in first half is where this game was lost.

Jt should have started. He gives us a chance. Enough with the after school special feel good story. Everyone, including all of you that post on this blog need to pull your heads out of your ass. In closing…,,

UGA (offense) 3, Clemson 3. But yeah, tell me again how great JT is.

Look, we’re all frustrated and we’re all looking for something to lash out at and something to latch on to. At the end of the day, those of us who were concerned and got mocked for it ended up being correct in our worries. But at the end of the day we just got the shit kicked out of us and no QB on our roster changes that. I don’t know what the answer is and you don’t either, but to call stupid idiots for not slobbering over JT is churlish. JT wasn’t going to win that game any more than Stetson was. To think he would have is asinine.

  58. The secondary has been my biggest concern all year and it finally got exposed and worse than I expected. If you can’t pressure the QB, you better be able to cover. We couldn’t do either yesterday and to make matters worse there often wasn’t a defender to be found on plays. So no pressure, no coverage and no coaching on the big stage.

I’m not even gonna harp on Bennett. I’ve seen JT make the same bad throws. Maybe he would have made a difference but I don’t believe it. It seems we just aren’t very good at QB and/or can’t develop them.

All of that, against Bama, again…it’s disheartening. Georgia football.

    Two thoughts today:

Extremely disappointed in our defense, obviously. While Bryce Young and Alabama’s receiving corps are extremely gifted, this isn’t LSU from two years where you could just tip your cap and say that no one was able to slow them down all year. Auburn damn near shut them out last week. LSU gave them major problems. Florida made them look pedestrian for much of the game. We’re better than all of those defenses, by a mile, but you would have never known it from seeing how comparatively poorly we matched up with Bama’s offense. I can only hope we get a rematch with them to try to atone for that uncharacteristically embarrassing performance.
My argument all year for going back to J.T. has been simple: If I’m going to lose, I want to lose with my most talented QB on the field, not sitting on the bench. I know J.T. isn’t perfect, but I also know he brings a lot more to the table than Stetson does. If Bama beats us again with J.T. running the show, I can live with that. But if we roll out Stetson to lose to Bama for the third time in two years while J.T. rots away on the sidelines, that will be very hard for me to accept.

I can only assume there is something going on behind the scenes that explains the seemingly bizarre decision to continue starting a former walk-on over a future NFL QB who is undefeated as a starter at UGA. But because Kirby is so tight-lipped, all we can do is speculate. Just an incredibly frustrating situation from a fan’s perspective.

I see “Lather. Rinse. Repeat.” on JTD. I thought last year he looked injured and people said Kirby was being a blockhead. JT was fine. When JT did play, he was fine but his mechanics looked rough. I can only assume that JT’s injury in 2021 is playing a more significant role in him not playing that anything else.

    Good to see Pickens.

I figured on Bama hitting a couple of long one and Stetson to have a turnover or two. I did not figure on an all out ass kicking and being taken to school like that.
