Another signing day in the books

And another great class signed by Kirby Smart.

Georgia football’s latest recruiting class replenishes talent on one of the nation’s most loaded rosters.

The Bulldogs’ haul ranked No. 3 nationally Wednesday evening with 23 players on the first day of the early signing period. That trailed only Texas A&M and Alabama. The Bulldogs look headed for a sixth straight top 4 class in the 247Sports Composite.

The group boosted fills gaps in one particular area of need in quality if not quantity: the Bulldogs secondary.

Coach Kirby Smart and his staff reeled in three 5-star DB signees including Jefferson’s Malaki Starks along with cornerbacks Jaheim Singletary from Jacksonville and Daylen Everette from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. All are top 30 national prospects…

Smart spoke before safety Kamari Wilson, a five-star UGA target, announced on ESPN2 that he’s signing with Florida, but later in the broadcast edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr. from American Heritage in Fort Lauderdale, announced for Georgia. That gave Georgia five five-stars in the class.

It’s one of the ten best recruiting classes of all time, as measured by the 247Sports Composite.  And yet… and yet… I can’t help but feel that’s there’s a whiff of, if not outright dissatisfaction out there in Dawgland, at least one of disappointment.  Here’s macondawg’s take on the moment:

It felt more like a Mark Richt signing day than a Kirby Smart signing day. 18 of Georgia’s 27 current commitments had their paperwork in by 11:00 am. Three more won’t actually sign until February. There simply wasn’t the excitement, the tidal wave of momentum we’ve come to expect over the past five years…

… But for the first time it feels a little like we’ve come back to the pack in recruiting, and that Georgia could have better addressed some real needs. This staff has earned every benefit of every doubt given the performance of guys like Jordan Davis, Ladd McConkey, and yes, Stetson Bennett.

But today feels a little like a day when Georgia continues to excel where it already excels and stayed the same rather than getting demonstrably better in the places where improvement is necessary.

He chalks that up to several factors:  (1) a post-SECCG hangover; (2) lack of pizzazz at the o-line and receiver positions; and (3) signing only four of the top ten players in state.

This class is very good. But it’ll look a whole lot better if Georgia wins two more football games before they all report this summer. If that doesn’t happen, and Georgia reports as expected with no more than 3 returning starters on defense and 5-7 on offense, this class will start with the same Sysiphean charge as Kirby Smart’s last five top three recruiting classes: to finally win a national title for a fan base that has aches for one for four decades. Bulldog fans are rightly wondering how many National Signing Days they have to win in December to win the last college football game of the season in January.

Maybe it’s a sense of déjà vu.  Maybe we as a fan base have grown a little jaded.  Maybe Texas A&M’s off the charts class takes a little of the gleam off Georgia’s.  I get it.  But I look at this 2022 class so far and think it registers a little better than just very good, despite that I agree with macondawg about this o-line group.  With this class, Georgia has a balanced quarterback room, a loaded tight end room and a running back in Branson Robinson who looks like a total stud.  There’s also ridiculous help at edge and ILB, which is needed.

For one thing, Smart was consumed with the state of his secondary, and given that we just saw them get roasted by Alabama, his focus is understandable.

“We’re still lower than we’ve ever been in terms of defensive backs,” Smart said. “We have more leaving than we do coming. We were already below and if you have more leaving than you have coming than you’re actually a negative net gain. …It’s been tough for us this year because we have not been able to play dime packages (six DBs). We have not been able to do so many things we want to do.”

Beyond that, I think there are a few factors that have to be baked into the cake before we can reach a full assessment.  This staff has shown itself to be extremely confident about identifying talent better than the recruiting sites do, and given their success as seen this season with players like Davis, Bowers and McConkey, they’re entitled to the benefit of the doubt in that regard.

Also worth taking into account is that Kirby’s done good work in the transfer portal and I have no reason to think that won’t come into play in the next few months.  One tell regarding that is, despite leaving a few roster spots open yesterday, there are three commits who are putting off their decisions until February.

Three players committed to Georgia–Appling County outside linebacker Darris Smith, wide receiver Dillon Bell and running back Jordan James revealed they play to sign in February.

“It’s still not over as far as guys we’ll sign in February,” Smart said.

That smells like a mutual decision.  Smart wants to see who leaves after the playoffs in order to determine how many total open spots he has to work with.  (Remember, with the temporary NCAA rule, he could sign as many as 32, depending on who leaves for the portal.)

In other words, sure, there are things I question about Smart, but roster management ain’t one of them.

What’s your take?

Lots of 5 stars on defense. Not too excited about the offense. Seems like we are going to do what we do.

Spoiled? Remind me of our powerhouse offense that’s bailed us out lately that won anything of merit. IDGAF about the rose bowl either

Unreasonable? When we blow out nobodies and the coaches say we suck we have a lot to work on is unreasonable.

Misinformed? I’m using the subjective metrics of the recruiting sites. The other guys got better players but feel free to tell me I told you so the next few years when we become an offensive juggernaut.

Four the last five sec east titles isn’t nothing.

Sorry the defense played too well during the regular season to need “bailing out.”

Huh? 12-1, No. 3, playing to get into the title game but we suck? Sure. Where did I ever find “spoiled?”

What “other guy” got an objectively better qb/wr/rb/te class yesterday?

Perhaps I should have included “nucking futs.”

Yeah the SEC east was murderers row. I guess you forgot the teams we played when we needed an offense that wasn’t pedestrian. And I didn’t say we sucked but the coaches did in so many words.

It’s easy to find the better players at positions you listed on the very same recruiting sites.

But hey you can post all them powerhouse offensive stats whenever you feel like it.

That’s probably why we are the number three team you are bragging about instead of number one though.

Ernest Greene and Christen Miller both are high 4 star kids. They were heavy UGA leans headed into yesterday but want to wait until the AA game in January to announce. Worst case IMO is this class finishes second. My only gripe is how badly we whiff on top receivers constantly. Other than that I think we are spoiled by the level of talent Kirby brings in. Look at UF they signed only 2 kids out of 10 that we offered. We signed more top 25 kids than they signed top 250 kids and they are celebrating. It’s all about expectations.

I think we may continue to whiff on top receivers until we put a quarterback on the field who can sling the ball around consistently. Top receivers tend to want a lot of opportunities to make catches.

I agree. I say it every time but Richt was great but this ain’t a Richt class. This “disappointing” class would be Richt’s “Dream Team” class. We never know how these guys are going to pan out but the Georgia fans who have appeared post the SEC Championship game are not representative of how I feel about this team, Kirby or the direction we are headed. I think there’s a few things that impact the mood:
    1) We’ve been there, done that when it comes to signing elite classes.
    2) The problem area on this team is offense and 5 of the 7 3-stars were on offense.
    3) We’re still in an SECCG hangover. The recruiting is on par with Alabama and yet we still keep bumping our heads on the glass ceiling.

    • Yes, the recruiting is on par with Alabama, but we all know the coaching has not, so that is essentially why we have a pessimistic outlook. Gonna need to cleanse those demons soon.

  6. The takeaway for me was actually UNC at #8. I mean, talk about “winning” the early signing period!

That being said, I don’t know what to think, generally, about recruiting classes. I don’t follow things too closely. I really start to pay attention to players once they’re on the field producing.

Great take! This is a great class!
The thing is, when you look at the “star” rating with these services, there’s always some manipulation to attract more eyeballs. The superstar that commits 6-12 months before signing day and stays quiet and solid, is more likely to slip in rankings than the uncommitted star that takes his visits late and decides on signing day.

The only change from the past few years is Texas AM replacing Clemson in the top 3. The pack at the top is the pack at the top, with tiny shades of different between the guys on the edge 4-star/5-star, either way, slightly tilting the scales between 1, 2, and 3. It’s not like this class faded back to the pack.

Can’t wait to see jaheim singletary join the ranks of Tyson Campbell and kelee Ringo, 5 star cornerbacks who are in every highlight clip come draft day in the NFL…..of them getting absolutely burned to crisp by some Alabama 1st round wide receiver.

Gonna be exciting watching vandagriff AND gunner Stockton battle it out for the second string spot behind some try hard less talented QB who’s “better at managing the offense”. And by better at managing the offense, handing the ball off, relying on the defense and throwing some absolutely devastating pick 6s in the annual game where we inevitably have to pass for more than 30 attempts.

It’s funny, but when I saw the OL class, Mark Richt is exactly what came to mind.

We had a nice run of 5-star OLs going for a few years. Has me slightly concerned.

And have we given up on the big 6’4”+ WRs we were chasing in past years (Wims, Bush, Landers, Cager)? Is it me, or does the overall class seem smaller than usual from the height & weight viewpoint?

Now that we have more data available, it would be interesting to look at OL recruiting under Luke vs. Pittman. It certainly feels like there have been less talented (by star rating) and smaller OL signees, but would be interesting to see the exact comparison.

          And that’s every year.

We could sign 17 5-star QBs, and the one who doesn’t play would be the reason Kirby’s an idiot and the Dawgs “just can’t do it.” Not only that, but his inability to get on the field would be proof that he wasn’t as good as the services said, and we can’t evaluate QBs for shit.

The OL won’t be too shabby with Jones, McClendon, Van Pran, Ratledge, maybe Truss, Mims or Morris filling it out.

The old ennui comes from the feeling that Georgia’s plateaued. Many of us still feel sick about the Bama game(s).
Reality is, we’re recruiting on an insanely high level – consistently in the tops of the class. We’re 12-1 and are have a play-in game to the national championship in a couple of weeks. We’ve got lots to tighten up if we’re going to win against Michigan and maybe beyond, sure. But if you’re not enjoying where the program is right now, then find another team, brother. Life’s too short not to enjoy this sort of ride, bumpy as it may be.

Most intriguing to me are the small but significant cluster of 3-stars signed this year. Sure it lowered the overall class rank a little, but the coaches clearly saw things they liked, and I would tend to put stock in their evaluation of talent.

This class had a little different feeling than past classes because of the dichotomy of the class. UGA signed 9 of the top 50 players on the ESPN 300 but also signed 7 3* players. My wonder is if Kirby is building his roster a little different with CFB free agency. The 3* develop or they are pushed to the portal leaving chances to grab top transfers from other teams.

Even though we had a very good showing, I still feel as though NSD was a disappointment or let down this year. We entered the day ranked #1 and finished at #3. We had 2 4-stars flip from us and whiffed on a 5-star at a real position (safety) of need that seemed like a lock. We had 2 4-stars delay signing until Feb., which usually means they won’t sign. Not sure if we’ll still sign Darris Smith and guessing maybe we think we’ll sign Tank Bigsby, but he’ll be a one and done RB. Hopefully, we can get some solid help at Safety and inside LB via the portal.

Kamari Wilson’s decision was the only one that didn’t go our way. The West kid from Tifton was probably flipping when Williams announced his flip. Killebrew’s decision is the other one that surprised me.

No one is talking about Marvin Jones Jr.’s signing day commitment. We got other guys who are committing at one of the all-star games. I am assuming the committed guys who haven’t signed will sign (although I’ve definitely been wrong).

I don’t know what makes a kid a 5* versus a 3* in the minds of those folks who make a living running services. I will speculate a little about the O-line: right now there are 4 and 5 star linemen on the team who didn’t crack the starting line up. Maybe the mashers aren’t the linemen that suit Monken’s offense? I don’t know, just an idea….

It feels like the Richt era because it’s a top 3 class…. that’s third in our own conference. And as we just saw…. yet again… none of this matters unless we do it better Alabama. And then there goes a DIFFERENT team other than Bama making progress towards that goal.

But this isn’t the Richt era, and this isn’t one of Richt’s “peak” classes sandwiched in between a series lesser top ten classes. And we’re not counting on any one of the five stars to be some kind of program saving demigod like we viewed Crowell, Stamford, etc. It’s a slightly less amazing than usual class that might mean we need to focus on OL next year and with Smart at the helm you can bet your ass we will do just that.
