Battle of the titans

Confession time:  I’m not getting all the angst over this.  If you’re a YouTube TV “member” — WTF is with that anyway, Google?  We’re customers, not club members — just cancel your subscription and take up with another streaming service.  Easy peasy.

If any of y’all out there are contemplating such a move, or have already undertaken one, please share in the comments where you’ve been looking.

I paused my Youtube TV membership this morning. Looking at Sling for the the next month, but only because it has a cheap “first month for $10” promotional offer right now. Then you can cancel.

Sling does not appear to be a season-long option going forward, because as far as I can tell, it has ESPN/2/3, but no SEC Network, ESPN U, ESPN News. The playoff games are all on ESPN, but we’ll probably have games next season on those missing channels, so no bueno.

Thank you for posting this, I just cancelled my you tube tv.

Anxiously awaiting the “go to” to be advised by someone here. My guess would be Hulu+?

Nice timing, assholes… If it lasts more than a few days here’s some options for other services. I’ll prob rotate the free trial route until these douches work it out:

I’m entering the transfer portal. Had Hulu Live but it’s not as stable as YTTV – buffering etc – and the inability to navigate around the commercials is a PIA. Otherwise, Hulu was fine.

I just downloaded hulu and git the free preview. No espn.

How do I stop doing it wrong?

I just signed up for Hulu as well, not sure how you don’t have espn? Right now it shows on live TV that I can watch an FCS playoff game but I didn’t test it.

So I tested it, watched a few seconds of sports center and also watched a few seconds of a DII game on espnu.

Apparently I have to add it on. I tried that. Said “something went wrong.” It may be because I’m not home.

I’m reminded of the simpler times of three channels on a dial…

Well Disney owns Hulu so I’m sure there is no conflict of interest with ESPN who again is owned by Disney. Let’s see crash YTTV subscribers using ESPN and gain those subscribers on Hulu. Win, win for Mickey.

There are some nuances to Hulu. It will start you out at a Home Screen and even show you what’s live now. Have to (on a Roku anyway) arrow up and over to “live” and hit enter. It will take you to whatever – then you can hit the down arrow to pick up the channels. Can arrow left to go to recents, all channels or sports etc. Sounds worse than it is but I think it was still better than the YTTV navigation.

Shit as a YouTube tv subscriber now I gotta find a different means to watch Georgia get seal clubbed by Michigan or Alabama. (Not kidding, gonna watch one or both games even though we all know the outcome).

No, no we don’t all know the outcome but don’t have your pessimistic attitude, so hit the road with that shit.

Guys, nothing would make me happier than for everyone to give me a ton of shit in 4 weeks for how wrong I was. But the fact of the matter is: we’re gonna admit I’m right now or you’re gonna admit I was right in a month. Take your pick. This program is 100% going to make good on this prediction.

I’ll go as far as to say nobody on this blog will see another Georgia national championship in our lifetimes. We, using the word we intentionally, are the Chicago cubs and red Sox pre 2004: organizations where failure and incompetence are so deeply woven into its DNA that it can’t capitalize on its numerous advantages for over a century as it torments a fan base that is way more forgiving and loyal than the organization deserves.

charlottedawg my current plan is, if we get to the national championship game, I’m going to DVR it and only watch if we win. My assumption being that Alabama will be the opponent and I simply cannot stand to watch us lose to them a third time in 15 months. But you’re even more pessimistic than me. Truth is, if the game is on I’ll have a hard time not flipping over to watch at least a little of it live. Though my wife’s screaming and cussing will tell me all I need to know whether I watch or not. 1980 was my senior year in Athens and I do wonder if I will live to see another.

  8. I have used Sling for a few years now. I turn it on in August, and cancel it as soon as the national championship game has been played. It is reliable. The only thing I dislike is it only allows on one TV at a time.

  9. I don’t love Xfinity, but at least right now, I don’t have to worry about any of this. I pay more, but I also worry less.

I fired DirectTV/AT&T. Recently went back after AT&T spun off DTV. Same package, $125 less/month. Leverage.

    • Yep…and they just upgraded my router and knocked $20 / month off my bill. Amazon Prime membership comes with both the TV and music and we cherry pick Apple TV when stuff like Ted Lasso comes out.

I’m in the same boat. I have three TVs with Xfinity and also have HBO. Bill is about $150/month. I have no desire to leave them.

I probably pay more but all the streaming services suck when I had them last. I use to have PS VUE about 3 years ago before it went belly up. From what I remember, all had a live sports delay (so forget about texting friends who are watching the same game on cable/sat, you will be 45 seconds behind them), you have to fumble with the inputs when you want to switch to Ant (if you have one), and the remotes for all the streaming devices are all barebones with no channel numbers. Hell, most can’t even “last channel” easily.

I can literally plop down on the coach, hit the power, punch in the remote 403 (ESPN), and be watching a game all in under 5 seconds. With streaming its about 30 – 45 seconds to do the same thing and that is if they didn’t change their UI last time I used it. Then on top of that, if you internet is out, you have no TV at all. At least cable and internet are decoupled from a service standpoint so neither ones relies on the other.

I’ve found moving our phones off of a postpaid cellular provider (ATT) and onto prepaid (PureTalk USA) was a better cost savings from a user experience standpoint. Ended up saving us about $150/month and the experience is totally seamless unlike streaming which requires everyone to learn new things.

      • Back when I had Xfinity TV, when my internet went out, so did my cable. At least in my area, cable from them is no longer analog. It is all digital and it all goes through the same routers. My xfinity box was basically streaming data which really no different than my amazon firestick.

Yeah this is why I just suck it up and pay Xfinity each month. Every time I tried to cut the cord, I added up all the services I wanted and it cost more total.

Hope they get this shit sorted out but I’m sure Disney knew exactly what they were doing. Kids at home, family visiting and no Disney owned channels? That’s some leverage right there.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up. I have access to the ESPN app through my sister’s login, but the buffering is unbearable. Ironically it seems to work fine for commercials and whenever the talking heads are on but during gameplay it buffers about once a play. Joined YouTube at the start of the season and was very happy with the quality and service but this is a deal breaker. Guess I’m gonna be making a fool of myself in public watching the playoffs at a bar!

Kudos to Disney – if I were in their shoes trying to beat my competition I’d do the same. I’ve paused my service and will just move it to Hulu+ if they don’t come to terms in next few days when actual games come on that I’d like to watch.

Hey – FWIW – there are a ton of youtubers who cut games snap to snap and post within a day or so of the game. Not an option for live watching, but it was actually how I consumed most of my CFB this year. Major time hack as most games are < 20 minutes of action. Just paused my YTTV and will be checking for bowl vids tomorrow here…

As a former Hulu subscriber for about a year, I can tell you that you will not get used to it. Most busted UX of all the streaming services.

But, as of now, they got the Disney stuff and YTTV don’t.

  18. I left YouTube when they didn’t cut a deal with Ballys and couldn’t watch the Braves. Signed up for Att streaming which is now Directstream. It works decent with an Amazon Firestick.

  19. I hate to break it to you guys but Disney is going to take one streamer out after another. Sling will be next. Until all that is left is Hulu and Disney+. Disney spent billions building an IP moat around their business and they aren’t going to just keep business as usual. The M/E industry is in the midst of heavy consolidation and Disney is now the undisputed king with a near monopoly in multiple verticals. Screwing YouTubeTV is only the beginning.

I for one hope Google screws them back. Disney uses Google for everything. Disney is about to see their bill rise for GCP, analytics, Ads, storage, etc. And they deserve it. We consumers are the ones that are getting screwed here. This is Amazon’s prime playbook all over again. Fuck Disney.

Easy to switch, yes, but I have a problem with Disney essentially forcing consumers who want access to their ESPN sports channels off of YouTube TV and onto the next best alternative, Hulu, also owned by Disney. And they’re telling you up front that in a couple of days the price is going up and you’ll have no choice but to also subscribe to Disney Plus and the virtually useless ESPN Plus services. Yes, you can switch, but in this case they own the product (college football) as well as the streaming medium. And I tend to agree, they’re no doubt planning to pull their channel from the other competitors as well.

We just upgraded our existing Hulu subscription to include Live TV, but had a moment’s pause in doing so when I realized that they had opportunistically announced a raise in their rates to coincide with this hiccup in the Google/Disney relationship.
