Your game day post, Miami vice edition

So, in the end, it all comes back to what sort of lesson do we take from the SECCG.  Did Alabama expose Georgia’s fatal flaws and show the Dawgs are really more like paper tigers?  Or, as Seth Emerson ($$) put it, was it more a case of Georgia running into “the one team in the country with the same talent level, and… an elite quarterback and speedy receivers who ate up a vulnerable secondary”?

If it’s the latter, it’s hard to be scared about today’s meeting, because Michigan’s offense is about as polar opposite Alabama’s as you can get.  While it presents challenges, they’re ones that Georgia’s defense is capable of controlling.  Moreover, even if Georgia succeeds in that, Michigan isn’t built to change the way it operates.  Here’s what Brian Cook says about that.

Wisconsin is a similarly elite rush defense and Michigan running backs scuffled to 93 yards on 34 carries, with a long of just eight. You could squint and say that those results without a single 10+ yard run is relatively encouraging, especially since Michigan has been extremely explosive on the ground this year. But preventing explosives is a skill and Georgia is even better at that than Wisconsin is. Wisconsin 20+-yard runs allowed: 5. Georgia: 3. Even mighty Alabama took one look at this front seven and noped out, rushing Brian Robinson Jr just 15 times to 44 Bryce Petty [sic] passing attempts.

Michigan probably cannot maintain reasonable levels of offensive efficiency while passing 75% of the time. That’s not their DNA. So they either win by burying Stetson Bennett in defensive ends or finding ways to cobble out enough efficiency here to make play action reasonably effective. Ways they get there include running back overperformance, JJ McCarthy evening up numbers, Michigan’s OL being on another level from previous Georgia opponents, and wacky stuff. All of these are at least plausible; none seem particularly likely.

And if they can’t?  Cook’s suggestion is that the best option is to keep pounding away in three-yard chunks.

The ability to get reasonable gains on a down to down basis and put Michigan in positions they can succeed on third down is going to be equally important. And things might be… pretty okay here? Georgia’s defense does not feature blitzball linebackers and their underlying DL stats paint a picture. Georgia’s 42nd in line yards, 44th in power success rate, and 39th in stuff rate. They’re just okay at preventing the first couple yards. They are *extremely* good at preventing everything but those first couple yards since they’re 10th in opportunity rate and—as mentioned above—have given up just three chunk runs this year.

It’s not too hard to envision Hassan Haskins getting those first two to three yards and then Haskinsing himself another couple, and that adds up tremendously over the course of a game.

That’s as opposed to Alabama barely even making the effort to run the ball.

Of course, that won’t be enough.  Michigan will have to break some big plays to have a real chance.  The problem there is, as Brian notes, Georgia is very good at not letting opponents do that.

Georgia: 3.

But what about the passing game, you might ask.  No, Michigan doesn’t have a Young or Williams to attack with, but that doesn’t mean that things weren’t exposed in the SECCG that might give Michigan an opportunity to exploit.  I’m going to be nervous until I see that Georgia’s figured out a better way to defend the slot receiver than it did in Atlanta.  And I’m going to be concerned if Georgia’s pass rush can’t generate more consistent, effective pressure than it did against the Tide.  Call those my “paper tigers” concerns.  If Smart and Lanning haven’t figured out how to shore those up, Michigan may not put up 41 tonight, but it’ll certainly be able to move the ball effectively within its offensive scheme.

On the other side of the ball, I have to say that Michigan’s defense isn’t appreciably better than Alabama’s.  That being said, if the Wolverines find a path to build a significant lead along the way, I expect their defense will be formidable enough to make it difficult, if not impossible, for the Dawgs to mount a comeback.  Michigan isn’t the only team playing tonight built in a particular way.

I don’t really see that happening, though.

A few other considerations:

  • Nobody’s talked much about special teams.  Georgia’s aren’t a liability, but Michigan’s are exceptional.  If the game comes down to special teams, that’s probably not a good thing.
  • There’s a lot of whispering lately that Georgia is close to full strength, healthwise.  If that’s true, it’s a big deal, especially for the receiving corps.
  • Michigan in ninth in the country in red zone conversion percentage, but only 64th in red zone touchdown percentage.  I’d like to think that might be important, except Georgia is worse in both categories.  On the other hand, they’re considerably better in red zone defense than is Michigan.

In the end, I think there are some obvious lessons Michigan will try to take and apply from the SECCG.  The big one is on defense, of course.  As Brian writes,

The formula is to avoid straight dropbacks when possible and to lean on the run game threat to keep it from landing on Bennett’s shoulders too heavily. If you can disrupt the formula you can get some nonlinear improvements.

… QB Stetson Bennett was clearly rattled in the second half of this game as he found himself in an unfamiliar situation and began to lose faith in his protection.

That worked because Georgia’s defense cracked and left Bennett and the offense in an untenable position.  It’s hard to see how Michigan can fully replicate that strategy without first putting the Dawgs in a hole on the scoreboard.  After all, if you’re asking Stetson Bennett not to lose the game for you, it helps tremendously if you’re not losing in the first place.

It would also help if the offense could avoid as many third-and-longs as possible.

I could go on and on, of course.  If you want more of a deep dive, check out Graham’s analysis for that.  (I’ll just say that his 31-10 prediction is way too optimistic for my taste.)

This game just feels like a grinder to me.  It’s what both coaches prefer and both teams are good enough to prevent the other from running away with things, barring a rash of turnovers.  Bottom line, I like both the under and Michigan covering.  Call it 24-20, Dawgs.

Have at it in the comments.

I strongly feel 7 to 9 of our defensive players will be in the nfl in 2022. That doesn’t even count Carter, Ringo and all that young depth that’s prevented from turning pro after this season. And the O has plenty of future pros too. If SBIV truly “gives us the best chance to win”, then there’s no question we should win. If we lose it’s all on the coaching, not the players.

24 points is what I’m thinking. If they get more than that its going to be a bad day to be a bulldawg. I’m worried that their old is probably the best we have seen. We’ll be good enough against the run but if their guy has all day in the pocket and he probably will then he will covert enough first downs to cause a lot of worry. We don’t have an olb that can rush the passer.

I feel like it’s my duty to point out two things.
!. The announcers talk about Michigan like they’re winning every play. Even when the don’t make a play it’s because they’re wonderful.
    2. We got screwed on a PI down near the goal line. Most blatant holding/PI you’ll ever see right in front of the ref who stood there with his finger up his ass. They’ve been letting MI hold our pass rush all night. But on that late interception, one of the announcers just couldn’t shut up about it being PI.

Stetson’s done a great job running from pressure. He’s quick. Several times I thought they had him and he’s turned it into a good gain. Also he’s stood there and hit the long ball when he knew a freight train was about to clobber him. This second half lull (I think) is a hangover from Kirby’s momentum killing mismanagement of the last drive of the first half. That, and the penalties. Penalties and not Michigan, have kept Georgia from scoring in the third quarter so far.

James Cook had himself a night. Michigan did a great job taking Bowers away in the second half. Bennett played well on 1st and 2nd down and was who he is on 3rd and long.

The defense played well against Michigan’s o-line. Our o-line completely dominated their d-line. We played the game Kirby wants to play with Stetson at QB. A great win, for sure. Kirby is now 2-1 in the CFP Playoff.

Enjoy the win tonight, worry about Bama tomorrow.

    Happy New Years!

Most of them are hiding..or feeling about an inch tall and can’t reach their computer to post.
At least Corch has the gumption to show up….as do a couple others.
While they can’t take back the thousand posts they made running SB down, they should, as you say, man up and admit their error.
Stetson Bennett played a magnificent game against one of the top defenses in college football. He damn sure deserved to be named offensive MVP. Good for him!
Did you hear the team chanting his name?
Did you hear what Kirby said about him after the game?
I wonder if some Michigan fans are going to blame this loss on the quarterback (s). As stupid as that would be, that’s what some Georgia fans after the Bama loss.

Did Stetson Bennett beat Bama tonight? Or did he beat an overrated Big-10 team that Kentucky would beat by 10 points?

Why is it that you and some others here are so miserable that you can’t just enjoy this win? We can go back to arguing if Bennett can beat Bama (I want him to be able to, I hope he can, but I don’t think he can) tomorrow.

You’re drunk, dude. Happy New Year!

            Actually, I’m happy. Ecstatic.

The miserable people are the guy above and some others who have made this game a referendum on an argument that DawgNation has been having with itself almost the entire season, instead of just enjoying the win and saving the argument for tomorrow.

Are you one of those miserable people, too? Or are you able to enjoy tonight’s win and find some joy?

It’s going to take a lot of imagination for the SB haters to spin this one into their whiney, negative narrative. But at least one is already on the mother.

  107. Way to go, Dawgs! A great game plan on both sides of the ball. Great execution across the board. This game was the shock and awe team we’ve seen all season.

I’ll start worrying about whether we can do it again on Monday.

Why can’t we? Seriously, if Auburn, Arkansas and Cincinnati can get pressure on Young and make him uncomfortable why can’t we? We need to pressure him relentlessly even if we give up a big play or two.

      • I think we can on defense. I imagine that’s what we’ll try to do. What we tried in Atlanta certainly didn’t work.

Maybe we can score enough to beat them because they are going to get theirs.

Jim Harbaugh seems like a good and kindly man. His demeanor doesn’t exactly scream “Head Coach of a major college program”. I find it amazing that anOSU got hammered by Michigan. But good for him. I’m happy they won the BIG and thrilled they got hammered by the Georgia Bulldawgs!!

Helluva game and a great end to 2021. Offense clicked and defense had its mojo back. I was tied up until game time and missed all of the lead-up chatter, so this may be a stupid question: Was Ringo in the lineup? I don’t remember seeing him in a single play. Surely I missed something.

  116. D as in Dawg

    The Good:

    Pass rush
    Turnovers
    Nakobe Dean
    Stetson Bennett
    Brock Bowers

    The Bad:

    Stetson on 3rd and long
The offense on 3rd and long
The coaches on 3rd and long
    Disappearance of Brock Bowers

Hope Stetson plays the game of his life next week, the D plays like their lives depend on it, and we all just get along. I tend to type the same thing I’d live bitch about if we were all sitting in a room together. It’s a little much, I get it, but we should all type to each other like human beings as I’m sure we’d do if in that room. I say we suck on 3rd and long and I swear about 10 of y’all want me dead. 😂🤣 I’ve been an ass, too, and I apologize for that.

SBIV to the death and may he shut my pissing and moaning up forever!!!

    Happy New Year to all!

    • Apparently Bowers has been dealing with a shoulder injury according to Kirby’s post-game presser. Once the game was out of hand, the staff decided to sit him.

Also good. Stetson escaping a torrid pass rush several times and not turning the ball over once.
Also good. Stetson running for first downs.
Also good. Defense getting pressure on MI QBs even with the worst holding of the last fifty years.
Bad…The refs favored MI. They cost us a TD by not calling the ridiculous holding/pi on the five yard line. But they sensed from the start that giving MI and edge was a useless and hopeless cause because they were obviously out-classed so they toned back the bias. Except for MI’s horrible holding, it was a pretty clean game.
Also Bad. The constant blathering of the announcers about Michigan’s players and their life history and prognosis for future great glory…almost every MI play had a silver lining to be discussed.
Also Bad…the propensity for Bennett haters to continue the attack on him with faint praise and thinly disguised and exaggerated digs.

Lol. He’s the greatest story ever. I do not hate him. I truly did not believe he could get it done. But he’s managed to do everything except beat Bama and hopefully that is next. Agree with your other points though. Any criticism of him is met with a barrage of defenders. I think what it comes down to is many of you want to trash talk because we’re winning and since there are no opposing fans on here to trash talk, you’ve selected the pessimistic critics of anything Stetson as the target. As if we aren’t Dawg fans who have suffered through the same things you have just because we are overly critical. We root for the same damn team and we’re headed out into the World now to be Dawg fans only to come back on here and get treated like Gator fans. It’s really silly.

“Faint praise thinly disguised and exaggerated digs.” 🤣

I set an alarm to wake me at 0500 to watch the abbreviated replay with full complement of commercials. I know I could record and watch at my convenience, but I don’t because… Fuckn Boomer.
I watch the games mostly with my wife who rarely criticizes and never gives up on the Dawgs. A few friends over for day games and only those who keep their criticism of Georgia to themselves. Y’all who are inclined to post your search for perfection that overrides your satisfaction with good enough should just keep on posting. If I don’t like it? Well, it’s physically easier and much less stressful to close this laptop than it was to grab Tony by his belt and collar and chunk his ignorant, drunk ass out the front door for his same live transgression. Don’t be butt hurt when you get Dawg piled by us homers though. Better than a sharp stick up the ass.
What struck me about this Orange Bowl was how much better the Georgia players and staff are than all but two of their opponents this year. There’s always going to be some team that will be a foil for the Dawgs. Some “generational QB” that gives the Dawgs D fits. Things get hard and some folks start looking for someone to blame. It ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Don’t point your finger saying the Dawgs ain’t where they need to be because of Saban or SBIV or anybody. We’re better than that.
Yeah, that’s a shameless ripoff of a Rocky Balboa diatribe; but, he’s so much more eloquent than I and the Dawgs have a puncher’s chance to win the NC. So it’s appropriate.

I was wrong; this team came out focused and prepared, and they executed well for the first 29:30 of the first half. Third quarter was that brain fart we sometimes have, and getting subs in in the fourth quarter of a CFP game is pretty impressive.

    Good game, and go Dawgs.

Haha, thanks. I may be a pessimist, and I may lose faith, but I’m damn sure not a bandwagon fan. And I’m glad it’s Alabama again, even though I’m still not sold on anyone beating post-season Nick Saban.

Dawgs can’t go 0-3 on turnover conversion, and they can’t get too cute on defense. Kirby and Lanning need to let those junkyard dawgs off the leash and force Young to make plays all night long.

And Stetson needs to throw it away (like he did last night a few times!) and live to fight another day.

I just am not sure if I’m glad I don’t live in Alabama anymore or if I wish I still did.

Agreed on all points, Ben. I’d like to see SBIV get more passes to big 0. Toss it high, he snags it and DB’s get hurt trying to tackle that monster. Speaking of monsters, the Dawgs LB’s need to corral that sissy little Bama QB and let #99 crush him like a bug on a Mack truck grill. The Dawgs simply need to out muscle Bama. Finesse ain’t gonna cut it.

I thought it was a bullshit call, myself. His helmet hit the ball, so I think it was far enough to the side. But still, guys shouldn’t lower their heads. There’s always a risk of getting that call if you do.

I mostly stayed away from coverage of the Michigan game, because I figured the focus would mostly be on the Alabama game, which I considered an aberration, and the alleged momentum of Michigan, which was what I got from the pregame coverage yesterday. The game was easier than I expected, but there wasn’t much chance Michigan was going to be able to run the ball enough to win that game. I just figured the offense would have to grind more, which would keep the game closer.

I had a bit of a nagging worry that the team might have let the Alabama game get in their heads, but it looks like they and the coaches took their mistakes to heart and came out focused and prepared. I tend to think the coaches overthought things in the first Alabama game and overprepared. Hence the confusion on defense in the first half. I still think they’re better than Alabama, and if they play their game, they’ll win next week.

Including mine, began believing when a lot of the stats and analysis by way of the Senator showed we were the last team Michigan wanted to play! ( proven true)
Never heard one pundit mention that the win against Ohio State was in a driving snowstorm that truly benefited one team over the other!!
