All the feels

I wish I had it in me today to compose something epic after last night’s win. Something biblical, like “wandering for four decades in the college football wilderness until reaching the holy land…”.

Truth be told, I’m still too numb to process what happened.

My daughter texted me last night, asking if I cried. Crying after Georgia wins isn’t really my thing. Lindsay Scott didn’t make me cry. Sony Michel didn’t, either. And I didn’t shed a tear last night.

The Ringo pick-six did take me back to another Georgia football experience, though — Robert Edwards’ clinching touchdown run in the ’97 Cocktail Party game. I didn’t cry when it happened, but I damned near passed out. Seven years of Spurrier frustration wiped out in thirty seconds of bliss will do that.

Last night, I had a similar out of body sensation watching Ringo and his posse coming down the field at me. It was almost surreal to see it unfold. The crowd noise was physically palpable. Cathartic, as I posted last night.

And so, upon waking this morning, my first thought was to ask myself if it really happened.

Then I remembered. It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

Like many of us here, I’ve been reading your thoughts on the Dawgs and football in general for well over a decade. We’ve all been through a lot just in the time frame since you started this blog. I’m happy for you, for us, for all the Dawgs out there that have been dying for this feeling. The boys did us proud. Thank you Senator, and congrats.

I don’t cry at wins. Or losses. But sometimes, on a nice afternoon or evening in Athens, when I’m thinking about how much I love this place, how much fun I’ve had here, the friends I’ve made, and the first notes of Teenaged Wasteland start up, and I think how lucky I am to be here, I may get a little choked up a time or two. Not everyone gets it, but that pure moment of joy when Lindsey Scott broke free, or 99x takeoff, or Sony for the win, or Ringo’s pick 6? I know everyone in a UGA shirt gets it.

  2. Amen. So many demons exorcised last night, so rewarding, not sure if it would be as sweet had it been anyone other than Alabama, too. Seeing Stetson break down on the sideline got me hard, I think his reaction spoke volumes to how everyone felt at that moment. The spell had been lifted and it was gut wrenching to feel, in a good way.

It’s indeed great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

I tried my best not to but I woke the whole dang house up when Kelee picked that ball off. And I wasn’t even yelling, but I was jumping up and down like a madman. Once they all poked their heads into the room though my volume immediately went up. The drought is over, it’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog. How sweet it is!!

Amen, Senator. Gratitude and a calm joy are what have covered me today and last night after the jubilant high-fives. Grateful for all the hard work put in by so many to make this happen that enjoyed the confetti falling on them last night. Grateful for the hard work from so many behind the scenes that goes unseen by all of us fans. Grateful to all of you on GTP who make it even more “great to be a Georgia Bulldog” year-round.

It is amazing how Stetson could contain himself during the whole season, given how some of our fans were sure he was our handicap. His reaction on the sidelines was just the weight of the whole Dawg Nation being removed from his shoulders. The man, the myth, and now the legend. The Mailman delivered for us.

GREAT words, 69Dawg! They should let you give the speech when they retire his number!
“Neither gloomy discouraging and hurtful words, nor being held to the impossible standard of perfection, nor lack of great physical height, nor lack of recruiting stars nor scholarship offer, nor being buried on the depth chart could keep The Mailman from the swift completion of his appointed rounds.
The Mailman delivereth the mail to the Dawg Nation!”
      Long live his fame
      And long live his glory,
And long may his story be told!

I’ll say it again. Stetson is taller than Bryce Young (it was obvious when they were talking on the field) and he outplayed the Heisman winner when it mattered the most.

    Out with the old – 2nd and 26. 1980, 3 and 18, etc.

In with the new – 2nd and 18 … with a walk-on QB no less.

  12. I didn’t bawl although I did come close to hyperventilating as Ringo ran down the field, but when I talked to my Dad this morning, I definitely got emotional. He is the reason I love Georgia, and sharing that moment with him will be a priceless memory. My grad student oldest daughter rang the Chapel Bell this morning. My senior middle daughter FaceTimed us from a bar in downtown Athens during the last minute of the game.

I’m going to savor this for a long time because I remember how precious this is.

Being a huge Dawg fan and a veteran watcher of DAWG-Tide games, I kept waiting for either the yellow “flag” icon to appear at the bottom of my TV screen, or the shot of the Referee stopping the celebration by

It was halloween in jax beach, needless to say I woke up on a beach porch with a uga flag wrapped around my body overlooking the Atlantic Ocean as the sun was rising. Last night, was a culmination of all our moments like that over the years finally come to pass. Thank you Dawgs. Thank you.

Went from angry, frustrated, despairing tears with 11 minutes remaining in the game to happiest tears I’ve ever known when Ringo housed that under-thrown pass. The bourbon helped both.

I’ll continue to say it: I’ve never been happier to be wrong about Bennett and Kirby, and I’m sorry I doubted them. I didn’t think they could do it, but even before kickoff I hoped they could. That hope turned to ash in my mouth after that terrible fumble, but then was resurrected by a decisive drive and then a defensive stand and then another decisive drive and then Kelee Ringo.

In a weird way though, for me, it all makes this better because I just didn’t see how it could be possible. It was the impossible, and it happened. The impossible happened! FOR us and not TO us, for the first time in my life that I can remember (I was a baby when we won in 1980).

The Braves winning the World Series is one thing. That was great, and I loved it. The Dawgs winning this title is among the best days of my life, and I’m sure the lives of everyone here. I loved my time in Athens, walking up and down those hills, walking past the stadium every day of the week, sitting in Valdez’s History of Rock class. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Earning my degree is one of the happiest days of my life. Yesterday is right up there.

Two words. Two simple words. GO DAWGS!

Yeah, I was fuming at the refs. They really appeared hell-bent on making sure Bama won. The 3-blown-calls-in-one-play just crushed my hopes, but Bennett said FU and stuck it right up Bama’s (and the refs’) ass. TWICE! Then Ringo came to town.

Speaking of the referees: The only call that they made that I thought was complete utter bullshit was the ‘fumble’ by Stetson. Being generous, I could say maybe they thought it was a fumble in real time, but looking at the replay it was clear and they upheld it anyway? That was just terrible, and left me thinking that the fix was in, and we were doomed.

Some of the hands to the face penalties were a little ticky-tacky, but there were some legitimate ones (like when the Bama guy lost his helmet because of it). And I have never seen a defense called for delay of game for clapping to disrupt the QB signals. I thought that was interesting, and early on it gave me hope for a decently officiated game. We complain about SEC officials, but the ACC ones ain’t any better. For even handed-ness I think the B1G has better than most, but still not that great.

I growled about official malfeasance, but the refs called a decent game outside of that Bennett “fumble”. A couple of intentional groundings were questionable especially in light of it not being called on Young after the overturned scoop and score. Maybe there was a receiver downfield? I’ll admit I’m biased.
The phantom PI calls against the Dawgs once they got the lead were noticeable by their absence. I reckon the ACC refs ain’t as influenced by Bama privilege as much as the zebras from Birmingham.
There were some late hits on Bennett that should’ve been called. Good clean hits kept Bryce young where I like him. On the ground. The candy ass.

I thought that Young should have been called for intentional grounding, too. I watched today on the sky cam version (which I like for several reasons) and you see Jameson Williams about 6-7 feet from Young. So you might be able to say there was a receiver in the area. I still don’t think Young was trying to do anything except get rid of it.

God’s honest truth… all of the sports despair we began to have starting with the 1996 World Series ruined my ability to have faith. Instead of opening new realms, we were, as conjoined fandom with the Braves, Falcons, and Hawks, either stuck in the purgatory of “ALMOST” or even worse, suffering the slings and arrows of the most humiliating, gut-punch losses in sports history.

They kind losses that drag a man’s soul down.

But in Stetson’s tears we are reborn.

I was a freshman the last time the DAWGS won it all. I was in Fulton County stadium in 1995 when the BRAVES won their 1st WS (helped take a little of the sting out of Spurrier hanging 1/2 a hundred on the DAWGS earlier in the day..I was there for that as well before we hauled ass over to Atlanta. Sat down just in time to see Justice his his HR). I was wondering if I would live to ever see another of either. 2 UGA NC’s and 2 BRAVES WS (with the double this year!). That should be enough for one lifetime, but HELL NO. I’m going to be a greedy bastard. With this infusion of success, I want MULTIPLE NC’s and WS!

I posted in the Gameday thread yesterday after the win if I was dreaming. I was dumbfounded after Ringo’s pick six. I feel back into my recliner and I don’t think I said anything for several minutes before the clock wound down to zero.

I still can’t quite wrap my head around that we actually won the game. I (we) have coveted winning another National Championship for so long that I’m not sure what to do now because that is all I have thought about for so long season after season. Watching our SEC brethren win them and us being left out… A weight has just been lifted off of Dawg Nation. We climbed the mountain and we slayed the dragon. The trophy has come back to Athens.

My wife’s family who are all big Bama fans sent in sincere and genuine congrats to me last night and this morning. I think they even they could see the pain that was UGA football for so long on my face. Its gone now…

Glad to be a part of this community here with the good Senator. We may all argue from time to time, but I’m glad to see the same usernames pop up week after week and season after season. Glad to share this with you guys even if it’s not face to face.

Happiness, sure, but a lot of that happiness comes from relief. Beating Bama, and the refs is hard to do, and until the Ringo INT there was always some level of concern. It was sweet that Ringo made the INT – they had picked on him all night – with some between the 20s success – and Kirby motioning for him to hit the dirt irritated me. Take a few more seconds off the clock and get to the end zone is fine as long as you can hold on to the ball. When that happened, then, and only then, you knew that all the Bryce Young magic, Saban voodoo, and ‘referreeing’ couldn’t change the outcome.

I did no such thing with my son last night, but when we pulled it off he watched 20 minutes of absolute unbridled crazy joy from his dad. Just seeing his smile at me after my craziness was my best memory of the night. He was so happy to see his dad happy. There is my memory. Great memory you’ll have there Twist. One of my favorite things about last night is that my middle son (in high school) is on a school related trip in Italy right now and he woke up at 2:15 AM over there to try to watch the game on his phone (6 hour time difference). It was hard to keep the stream going for him so he and I texted a lot during the game and I updated him when he couldn’t watch. He called me as the game was ending to celebrate on the phone with me and told me how happy he was for me and knew how much last night meant. My oldest son in college called me for the same reason. And then my wife and youngest son hugged me as they went off to bed. Maybe I am getting sappy in my old age. I didn’t shed a tear due to the win itself. But I damn sure did when the four people that mean more than anything in the world to me were so happy for me because they knew how much it meant.

The greatest play of that year had nothing to do with our superstar; it was a throw from our just better than average QB. This year’s defense might end up as the best defense of all time, but a just better than average QB made the plays last night that fired up the rest of the TEAM to win the 4th quarter. I am beyond proud of these young men and this coaching staff. They believed in themselves when others doubted. HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!

I won’t worry about the draft, the portal, or anything else for a while. That being said, I can’t believe Vegas already released odds for 2022 season without knowing anything about the teams. Bama, of course, is 5/2 and a clear favorite. Georgia is next closest at 9/2. Which is absolutely silly (as to Georgia) because soooo many pieces will be gone/can be gone. But it is a great feeling to wake up after the greatest night of my football life and realize that not only does Georgia have a second natty in my lifetime and beat Bama to do it, but Kirby is building something at Georgia truly special that isn’t going to be a one off production. The natty is special. But so is the feeling that while there may be ups and down season to season this program isn’t going anywhere for the near future.

I cried thinking of my father, UGA class of ’61, who died almost two decades ago after raising this boy on all things red and black. No matter where I lived, we always talked Georgia football before, during and after games and seasons. When Ringo scored it hit me like a wave and I wept for sheer joy and sorrow and 40 years of pent up emotion. I missed the old boy, but hugged my children and called everyone else and slept little because there is too much to read about this great and glorious team and I need a nap but we are NATIONAL CHAMPIONS after slaying the dragons and demons that haunted us. Yes, that was a run-on sentence. They wouldn’t approve in Park Hall, but today, who cares? Go Dawgs from Western Kentucky!

Dear Bulldog friend, I have learned the glory of Kentucky bourbon since moving to these parts 5 years ago from Valdosta. I imbibed some single barrel Elijah Craig upon securing the national title last evening. Craig was supposedly a preacher and a creator of fine spirits. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I was trying to be stoic. But I confess that when Bennett fumbled I got infuriated (at Karma not Stetson). Then I quickly got overexcited when Ad Mitchell snagged his TD, and spent the rest of the game until the pick six in white knuckle mode.
I turned 65 in November. The last time Georgia won, I was 24.

I was 15, in Mama & Daddy’s living room, in front of the family TV. Jumping up and down, screaming at the top of my lungs when Belue to Scott happened. I watched every second of the Sugar Bowl, just waiting for the sugar to fall from the sky and was so happy when the deal was closed. Great memories, now at 56, happy to have a new one to keep that one company!

I wasn’t alive in 1980 but I have to imagine this team will be immortalized like no other in Georgia history no matter how many national championships Kirby ends up winning (feels weird and wonderful to say that last part). It’s not just that they broke a 40 year drought and finally slayed the bama dragon but the way the fought and played for each other all season long was a thing to behold. This was a team where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, which is saying something considering the talent of those individual contributors.

I was a toddler when 1980 happened. Family had season tickets 80s to mid 90s. So I grew up hearing about Herschel and that time period. Love the 70s/80s UGA songs. After the game I keep thinking of Munson’s ’80 Cocktail Party call where he said “We were gone I gave up, you did too”

That summed up the feelings after the questionable calls and the supposed fumble.

    But “Dawgs on top!”

I was 5 in 1980. That title is probably more a legend in my mind than an actual memory. I remember Dan Marino knifing our hearts the next year and sobbing at the end of the Penn State loss the year after that. And then Herschel left for the altNFL. And then decades of “Next Year.” All those dues we paid. And paid and paid and paid. Somewhere along the way, I never wanted to see a reference to 1980 again — it felt like a taunt even when it wasn’t.

At last, the payoff. We did it. And we did to those bastards who’ve broken our hearts more completely than any villain in any book or movie. I’m OD’ing on joy.

I was born in 83 so I wasn’t around yet for the last one. I got into the Dawgs through my parents, who are both alumni, as are some cousins, aunts, uncles, and one grandparent. UGA football has always been a family event for us, so I’ve been hearing about 1980 for literally my whole life. However for me personally my fandom has been a litany of heartbreak: my first game was the homecoming loss to Vandy in the early 90s. I was in Jacksonville in 08 for Tebow and Harvin, in Auburn in 2010 for Newton and Fairley, at the 2015 Bama game, and at the SEC Championship this year. I’ve seen some good ones too: the 4th and 15 at Auburn in 02, the SEC championships in 02 and 05, the shutout at Auburn in 2012, but nothing like this. I wisely stayed home last night and look what happened! This is the best sports blog on the internet, and the best fan community as well. I have disagreed with some of y’all before and may well do so again; families fight sometimes, but everyone still shows up for dinner. We sure had a hell of a spread last night. Every day, but especially today, it’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!!!

Literally thousands or good folks who have suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, to have it all wiped away in a near 80 yard pick six dash to glory and the pinnacle of College Football. Yes, our Dawgs, our beloved and wonderful Dawgs are the best team in the land. Throughout the know universe and until the end of time, they are and will be 2021 National Champions! This, I want to live during a period when UGA takes multiple National Titles. The program has the fan backing, funding, access to talent, and history to do more than Florida did under Meyer.

I am overjoyed with this title and hopeful of the future. I am reading articles on what next year’s roster will look like and interested to see what happens this year in the transfer portal.

I want to see UGA get a Fiesta Bowl Win. UGA can gain even further rarified air by being one of few with a wins in the Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Rose and Fiesta. The Old Big 4 and the new New Years game that joined their elite status. I’d love to have a coach that has won all 5.

Other son pulls out his phone and starts videoing – Ringo intercepted the ball in front of us and the place just exploded. He didn’t record the play worth a damn, but (in Jeff Foxworthy’s words) Panderlirium Broke Out!

UGA fans should be on their knees thanking…..

Nick Saban for grooming Kirby Smart and letting him go to build Bama East. Nick Saban’s dominance was so vast, so overwhelming, that it actually became too much for one place. It was uncontainable, it had to be broken up. There has never been a coach who’s had a bigger impact on college football. Think about that for a minute.
Georgia should thank its lucky stars above that it spilled over to them. Without Nick Saban there would be no Kirby Smart and Georgia would still be living in 1980. Remember that UGA fans and always tip your cap to your maker.

Besides, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. We are just allowing you to rent the title this year but never fear we will be back next year with an eviction notice and a foot to your backsides to reclaim what is ours.

For the life of me, I’ll never understand how a fan base that has so many National Championships with Saban (The GOAT), can be so insecure. Did you just copy and paste what you sent to A&M folks with a couple of edits, after that loss?

Nick did not grow up in Alabama, played at Alabama or had a mentor from Alabama. He was hired in, after losing out on Rodriguez going to Michigan. It was the great coaching hire of all time, but not one that envision 6 Natty’s and 2 other appearances over Saban’s time at Alabama.

Realize that many Bama fans believe that they dictate the entire SEC and what it does. Sorry dude – it doesn’t work like that. If it did, I can promise you that Fisher and Smart would not be where they are.

Gentle reminder that Kirby grew up in Georgia and played at Georgia. His wife grew up in Georgia and played basketball at Georgia. He came home…

Really good chance that these two teams will see each other in Atlanta again next December. Until then, be safe, and have a great off-season and season to come.

Hopefully we’ll get to play in another year or so.
