Kirby did it his way.

The only sour note for me during a truly memorable night was the asshole Georgia fan sitting behind me.  (He may have been drunk and obnoxious, but it didn’t make him finer.)  Ten years ago, he would have been sitting in the Sanford Stadium stands, railing about Bobo after every play that didn’t result in a touchdown.  Monday night, it was about constantly giving Monken advice — Georgia should run the damned ball, throw the ball to Bowers or throw the ball to Pickens on every play, depending on the result — and about how Georgia was destined to lose because Stetson Bennett was not national championship material.

The obnoxious part was easy to discern.  The drunk part?  Well, buddy, when you feel it’s important to repeat the exact same point six times in a row, despite the fact that everyone around you, including your wife, is trying their damnedest not to become involved in the conversation, it’s a pretty good clue you’ve loosened your sensibilities with the devil’s beverage.

I mention this, not because he was right —  mercifully, Bennett’s touchdown pass to Mitchell shut him up for the rest of the night — but because it reflected a similar talking point sober fans were making here at the blog during the time between the SECCG and Monday night.  Georgia wouldn’t win the rematch, hell, couldn’t win the rematch, because Kirby didn’t build his team the way Nick Saban built his.

While the building part of that is true, it missed the larger point I went out of my way to make several times here; namely, that Bennett was fine for Smart’s and Georgia’s purposes as long as he wasn’t asked to do the one thing he wasn’t really good at, chasing an opponent with an explosive offense.  Georgia was going to have to win with defense and Bennett playing within himself.  As Matt Hinton put it before the game,

Smart has made some concessions to the spread revolution but never embraced the premise quite as fully as his old mentor. The Bulldogs’ insistence on sticking with Bennett behind center when most of the outside world expected his run as QB1 to be temporary was implicitly a bet that the defense would render the question academic. If they succeed in making a blue-chip, NFL-ready superstar look ordinary enough to win with a former walk-on on the sport’s biggest stage, it will be a landmark victory for the counter-revolution. Can defense still win championships in college football? We’re about to find out.

So we did.  It turned out to be the SECCG that was Georgia’s outlier, not the body of work from the other twelve games.  Imagine that.

You can find all sorts of takes on what the key to the game was, but for my money, the biggest of them all was that Georgia never found itself down by more than one score.  Yes, Bennett was shaky to start the game out, but he never found himself in a situation where he had to operate outside his margin of error.  He managed to regroup after his questionable fumble, when Georgia was still only five points behind, with the great throw to, and even better catch by, Mitchell.  But even there, he took a shot on a free play due to the ‘Bama offsides penalty.  He didn’t force a throw because he felt like he had to be the hero, and that’s because he was never forced to play hero.

In other words, the defense allowed Bennett to stay within himself when it counted.  Just like Kirby drew it up.

The Senator is so right and I was reminded of a I blame Bobo group that sat in front of us for years. There was a fool in front of us screaming either put JT in or same old Kirby. At one point he stood screamed Kirby has screwed us again. I’ll never understand why assholes feel the need to share their genius with us in such a negative way against their team.

I haven’t yet gone back and read the game day posts. I’ll wait till a little of the glow wears off. I do plan to read the posts just to enjoy seeing and I’m pretty sure I know who showed their ass and who was never gonna give up. For the doubters I’ll just say Kirby was right he played the man who gave us the best chance to win. Also Stetson Bennett IV is one tuff guy he took a beating and never failed to pop back up.

I’ll admit early season I never thought we could win it all with Stet. As the season wore on and Kirby and Monken said Bennett was our best choice I didn’t like it. I did believe they knew best and hoped the defense was good enough to allow Bennett to stay within his abilities. The defense did play to the best of their abilities and given their talent it was a glorious effort. Bennett never once tried to force it. His runs near the goal line were clearly I don’t see anything so don’t do something stupid live for another play beautiful.

This team reflects Kirby so much. Do your job beat the man in front of you don’t quit you make them quit. It was as predicted legendary and will only grow more so as I age.

I know all about that liquid brown demon as I was in my cups Monday night. I was wrong about Bennett and Kirby, as the Mailman was able to deliver after the Andy Staples-coined piano fell on our heads and Kirby was able to win with an offense that could only win one type of game.

No qualifiers or buts about it, I was happily wrong.

Everyone thought the wheels were coming off after the “fumble”, but the confidence to authoritatively take the ball, drive the field and get the lead back is every quarterback’s dream, and he made it reality….

And then spiking the ball right in front of the ref. We’d have gotten three flags for that one, and they would have reviewed it to see how they could take the points off the board.

I’ve watched it over and over again, and every time I see a pass. Arm motion, ball comes out in a forward-ish direction… ESPN announcers said “the ball started coming loose” before his arm went forward. No it didn’t! What is the rule for what’s a pass vs a fumble, then???

This particular crew was confused all night on pass/fumble and grounding/not-grounding. What a mess.

I might disagree, I don’t know, but I just don’t see the ball come loose from his hand before his arm moves forward. The ball comes out because he is trying to throw it and not for any other reason… also for the BY play as well, BTW, if my objectivity is in question.

I was a vocal stetson critic so I was sure that the bama TD after the fumble would lead to stetson starting to press and do something catastrophic, which he did: for Bama.

To come back after that and make 4 clutch throws in a row capped off with the dime to AD Mitchell takes some balls, period. I said before the game win or lose I was really proud of this team and I just wanted to see them play for one another for 60 minutes for one last time like they’d done for 14 games previous. that drive pretty much encapsulated that concept. It takes a ton of trust amongst the coaches and players to come back after the fumble and call 4 relatively long developing pass plays, 5 if you include the sack before 2nd and 18. Bennett trusted his protection and Burton on the first two throws. Kirby and monken trusted their line to block and Stetson to execute. Stetson trusted Mitchell to make a play one on one. Trust in the face of adversity. That’s what won the game.

Again, I haven’t confirmed by watching, but I could have sworn that they said that Bama had moved Anderson around and Ericson was having trouble. Maybe it was a different Bama DL, but either way that adjustment by Luke was definitely a difference in the game.

I had the same question. I never heard it said one way of the other. I was a little surprised that they didn’t put Truss in for Ericson as well has he played when he was in that spot. That says a LOT about their faith and expectations of Jones. Anderson/Turner are a load to handle but he acquitted himself right nicely.

THIS is the underrated move of the game. It doesn’t have the flash of a change at a certain skill position, but it was definitely impactful. Kudos to Salyer for being up for not only a change in position from T to G, but also a change in side from L to R. He’s a stud for being that physically capable and mentally prepared to give the coaches that hand to play.

“Not fumbling”? Has he had a problem with that or something? Seems to me like Zeus could’ve salted the game away if this was the old manball days. He was busting ass once the OL adjustments were made.

          • Salyer’s natural position is guard… it’s likely where he’ll play in the NFL. He stepped up and made himself a hell of a college LT, tho.

Also, the tackles cross-train at guard, as do the Centers. The only switch I wouldn’t expect, would be a T-C move. Luke and Kirby have a solid plan there, where the damage of an injury or poor play can be mitigated.

This time we got push and created gaps for the line backers to hit! Don’t recall a run by Young that hurt us, first game he always seemed to have one side of the field he could bail out to, not this time! Lanning had his guys ready and did himself proud heading out the door!

I am one of the people who said many times that Stetson is a DGD, a good and sometimes very good quarterback, who didn’t, in my opinion, have what it takes to win a national championship. I was wrong. Very wrong. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong in my life. I actually turned the game off for a while in the the third quarter. But soon my phone started blowing up and I turned it back on. I left Athens in 1980 and I’m getting old enough that I wondered if I would ever see another natty. But here we are gentlemen. So when do we start talking about next year?

  11. Stetson’s throw to Mitchell was on the money, but the laser to Burton to start the drive was his best throw of the night. In that one throw he went from looking like the moment was too big for him to looking like he’s going to put the team on his shoulders and march them down the field, which he did.

  17. Never have I felt more vindicated for just having faith in CKS.

Are we going to need dominant, elite QBs in the future to replicate success? Almost certainly. This accomplishment by CKS and his team is all the more impressive because they did it a much harder way. That doesn’t mean they should CHOOSE to do it this way again, but when it is all you have you try to win with what you got. And they did.

It reminds me of the Bucks NBA title. They built their team the hard way. That’s great and impressive. But there is a reason it is the “hard way.” The easier way is going to succeed more often.

But you know what the best part is? Having faith in the coach, the team, and the players was so effortlessly easy. It wasn’t my body and career on the line out there. I had the choice to trust, watch, and be happy, or doubt and be miserable stressing the hell out (needlessly).

That’s why I always predict Dawgs 70 – Opponent 0. Before the game happens, nobody can tell me I am wrong. I have the absolute choice and free will to believe anything, and nothing I think or do has any impact on the result anyway. So why not just believe and enjoy?

The run off-tackle has been there all night and we kept missing that block in the first half. That changed in the 2nd half and will simply count that as an adjustment and when it did, the running game became effective and that help set up the passing game, because Stetson had more time.

I felt that JTD was the better QB; but just had to tell myself that Kirby and Todd knew what they were doing and just because I thought JTB was the better option – that didn’t make it right. I’m glad they proved ME and many others to be WRONG.

He time Stetson was flushed, nothing really good happened. All of this good passes came when he had time. And he threw the ball away (most of the time), when it wasn’t there.

If Georgia had lost after the fumble (still say it wasn’t); then Kirby would be getting skewered today. But it was after that play that the offense played it’s best and your offense only plays its best if the QB is ‘on’ and Stetson certainly was.

I had drunk twenty somethings in front of me and behind me. They didn’t like that we were not throwing from the 10 at the end of the half. I commented using the term ‘stupid drunks’ (hey, I”m old) and one of them turned around with this wild look. And I said, we are down by 3, we get the ball first. When you put the ball in the air this deep in your own territory, a lot more bad can come out of it than good – including momentum. That was a lot for the drunk 20 something to take in, but he shut up… Another drunk guy behind me wanted to go for two when we were kicking the PAT for an 8 point lead.

I’ve always been opened to Sanford Stadium selling alcohol – after Monday night – I think I’ve changed my mind…

For me, I enjoyed the dogshit out of this season. I wrote here on GTP how this team was the best UGA team in history…even better than that 42 team of lore.

Admittedly, the victory is one hell of a salve to forget past transgressions, even within our own tribe. 41 years is a long build up time, so if a few folks with Munson ED prematurely released their frustrations during the game (or the season when everything was going great), although it’s probably not fun to be in the blast zone, I sort of get it. I’ll play devil’s advocate, though I don’t want to take anything away from an epic win. But sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Yes, SBIV benefited from an elite D. He was also lucky as heck. He overthrew Pickens, who made an incredible catch. He underthrew Mitchell, who also made an incredible catch. He got 2 huge PI calls on Burton. And he was able to pick up his muff on the snap that lead to the Zeus TD.

But hey, the rags to riches story is great. If people want to elevate the performance to Tom Brady status, who am I to argue. I’m ecstatic with the natty. Every guy on the team is a superstar in my book.

Agree on defense keeping it close. When Alabama took a 9-3 lead in the first half, I got nervous. Even though they were only kicking FGs, I knew a quick TD and a 16-3 score would have completely changed the complexion of the game. Fortunately, the 2nd quarter defense played out of their mind and didn’t allow the SECCG to repeat.

I have been vocal here in my criticism of Kirby’s defense-first-do-no-harm-offense strategy. I am absolutely thrilled that it worked this year, although I suspect we would be singing a different tune if Bama had been healthy. I’m beyond happy that we don’t have to spend the off-season debating the merits of Stetson Bennett, but I do hope that Kirby updates the strategy and gets one of those Bryce Young fellas going forward. It will also make WR recruiting easier if we throw them more balls. As one commenter said, we did it the hard way. Now let’s do it the easier way and see how many trophies we can bring home. After all the competition isn’t slowing down.

  29. Stetson has played Alabama three times now. Each time, he has gotten 20 some odd points. Is it reasonable to expect to beat them again next year if we only score 20 some odd points? Could Alabama’s top two receivers going down with injury have something to do with our ability to beat them in such a fashion? I’ll take the win but luck helped us (for a change).

    • If “ifs and buts were candy and nuts” seems appropriate to me here. If Bama had all their weapons, it would have been a different game? Well, if UGA had all its weapons all season, the loss column might have been totally empty. No one knows what “might” have happened but we all know what did happen. Kirby Smart took his depleted team and coached them up to a national championship. Nick Saban, who I will agree is the GOAT, did not. I’ll take that all day long.

If Stetson leads us next year, what’s the most likely outcome- a 2020/SECCG game result, or the NT game? I’m guessing not the latter unless you’re planning on having a defense as good as this year’s and them having 2 key contributors on offense injured

Should have just let your comments go, but…have you checked our injury list? Have you even bothered to look at the experience factor? All of our touchdowns,,offensvie and defensive…were made by freshmen. Most of our recivers were freshmen or lacked experience. Don’t give Bama an excuse for losing.,,it was the play of a damned good Dawg team that made the difference,

Arik Gilbert and Pickens at 100% sure would have helped us. JT Daniels being healthy all year probably means he keeps the job and we take a more talented QB into the game instead of the good enough walk on who wouldn’t let go of the job. Everyone has injuries.

Of all teams, you think Bama deserves an asterisk by the L because of a couple hurt WR’s?

“…Bennett was shaky to start the game out…”
Um… yeah. He managed to right the ship, and did so magnificently, but early on he was a mess. Nothing indicated that more than his scramble for a pretty decent gain when he just dropped the ball. If you thought everything was going to be okay at that point you’re lying to yourself. I was sitting in my armchair (not drunk and annoying The Senator) and I was nervous. Hell, my watch told me my heart rate was 121 bpm.

But it’s all good, because he got a grip on himself and you could see him getting his nerves under control. Just want to keep some perspective on this.

  33. I may be wrong but it appeared to me our success started when we started calling pass plays or run plays instead of RPO’s. That enabled the line to concentrate on doing one thing well which for the most part they did starting at that point.

To me, the telling moment was Monken’s response to Bama taking the lead. Herbie (and Saban too, I’d bet) was so sure we were gonna Georgia and establish the run, be methodical, etc. Instead, Monken tells SBIV “We’re puttin’ the hammer down!” and goes super aggressive. Five plays later, we’re back in front and THEN we go manball on our final offensive possession.

Look at this point in my life I wouldn’t have cared if the score had been 3-0 or 42 41, we won. This team won the National Championship, I personally DGAS how or why. As was said by others injuries are part of the game and so is “Ole Lady Luck” we got both, they got both but in the end we won. Go Dawgs!!!! One other thing, the refs were so embarrassed by the half time only calling 2 penalties on Bama but 7 on us that they tried to play catch up in the second half. They ignored holding altogether.

Man… it’s crazy how some can’t just be happy even after all this.

We don’t need the ands and the ifs.

We don’t need to hear, “We won, but you know…”

We don’t need people playing the stupid game of, “I’m a better fan than you.”

Just be happy y’all. 41 years of frustration are over. About 31-ish real years of misery are wiped-away. All of those seasons of almost are gone, forever.

We can look back at 1997 and 2002 and 2005 and 2007 and 2012 and 2017 and 2018 and we don’t have to qualify those years anymore with ands and buts and ifs. We don’t have to forget what were the gut-punching losses, but we can now remember the good times those years brought us.

2021 has wiped out all our debts. We’re free. So find some joy.

Seriously y’all, to me that last bit is maybe the most important thing of all.

I don’t know about y’all, but now, just now, thinking about 2012, I’m not upset any more. Losing to Sakerlina and missing out on 2007? I’m not thinking about that anymore. I’m thinking about being a student and being there for the Blackout and then traveling to the Sugar Bowl for an epic beatdown of Hawaii.

2021 has healed all our wounds. So please, be happy.

I believe in the Bill Simmons-coined 5 Year Rule. We’re inside of it right now. Nothing else matters but this win. So lets hold on to it and savor it for as long as we can. No ifs, ands, or buts. No playing the stupid game.

      Just joy.

  37. You too, huh? A considerable portion of the fan base thrives on negativity and making sure everyone knows that they told us so when things go wrong.

Hint: 3 minutes left in the first half of the got damn national championship game is a little late to be screaming about JTD.

Need highlights of these moves Stetson made in Orange Bowl and NCG with crazy arm swings and shoulder wiggles? Crazy

Our QB went head to head against the Heisman Trophy winner twice. The cumulative results.

Heisman Guy: 60.4% completion percentage, 7.8 yards per attempt and a 135.2 passer efficiency.
Our maligned from coast to coast guy: 62.2% completion percentage, 7.6 yards per attempt and 143.08 passer efficiency rating.

I am biased but the stats say our QB outplayed the Heisman Trophy guy. Maybe not an overwhelming advantage, but SB4 did us proud.

Stetson opened the door and stepped into the bright white chasm and delivered. Two of those incredible TDs in the 4th Quarter. The plays had to be executed. Under those circumstances, the magnitude & mindset to do those is beyond comprehension. Especially vs the mad GOAT and his Heisman who lost Williams. After the coaches moved Salyer to Right Guard in the 2nd Quarter, that was incredible coaching. That’s was also ginormous balls by Kirby & Luke – to leave the left tackle job to Broderick Jones with a whole other half to go! So many things in this game mattered, and everyone stepped up and closed the deal. All 60 minutes. Never quit, never choked, never gave up. Guts of Glory. Glorious Guts.

Yes on the OL move. After Salyer moved to RG and Jones took over at LT the offense was gained 260 yards on 38 snaps. That is an average of 6.84 yards per play.
Prior to that move we gained 104 yards on 18 plays, averaging 5.77 yards per play.
