Always be fretting

Boy, this quote ($$):

“I know people don’t understand it, but other teams are 10 days up on you because they finished Jan. 1, your competitors. And you’re going, wait, they’re doing what? We’re trying to win a national championship,” Smart said Tuesday morning. “Fortunately, I had a really good mentor, teacher of dealing with that because he’s in it every year (in Nick Saban). But you fall behind because you’re trying to manage your roster.”

Gee, maybe South Carolina is gonna win the East this year.

  1. Kirby must have heard that canon shot.

Kirby, you had control over whether you could begin recruiting and preparing for the 2022 season on January 1, 2022. I am sure Jim Harbaugh would have loved to lose those 10 days.
That is a “first world college football problem ” if I ever read one, and no one sympathizes.

  3. The apple definitely doesn’t fall far from the tree. Was it the 2011 national title game that Saban complained cost him a week of recruiting?

Bama went on to win the title again the very next season (and three more in the ensuing seven years). If Kirby’s 10-day disadvantage yields similar results, I don’t think anyone in Athens will be complaining.

I tell you, Kirby lives and breathes roster management. I never have a doubt that anyone could outwork him in that department.

I’m not sure 10 days makes any difference though. I think he also said that Saban had a 6 hour head start on NC game prep after the Cotton Bowl was over. I take most of that in jest.

I do think the transfer portal has some issues though that probably need to be addressed at some point. He basically said something to that effect during his 12 minute interview with Rece Davis on Tuesday morning. Having to re-recruit your own roster every year + go after new recruits every year is maddening. It’s one of the reasons, he is claiming, there are less and less good college football coaches. They are moving up to the league where they don’t have to mess with that.

That is a great point on his part. I don’t necessarily hate the portal, but it’s playing out to be something insane and unmanageable. There aren’t that many people cut from the Saban/Smart cloth who are willing to work 24/7/365 to maintain their rosters and achieve at the highest levels. And do it for 2-3 decades.

I agree with Kirby that the NCAA should put some limits on portaling/recruiting just to enforce some down time for coaches. No way Kirby coaches to 70 at this pace. He’ll (we’ll) be lucky if he makes 10 more years. It’s not healthy or possible.

Excuse me, but did I miss something where it said winning the title doesn’t help or have considerable value when crootin’, if I see the HC walkin’ into my living room with the trophy, I just signed up..GO DAWGS!

      • I posted on another thread about Jim Donnan’s comments on transfers. One thing he said was he talked to a coach he knows & the coach said he was looking at a kid in the portal. The kid told the coach he wouldn’t talk to him unless he’d get $15,000 / month for playing there. Donnan said he believes we’re headed for big problems. I happen to agree, though I know many here don’t.

It seems we have created chaos…if that was the goal, so be it.

Needs to be some rules…timeframes, etc..with exceptions for kids at programs who changes coaches, teams on probation, etc…

Not that anyone is going on probation anytime soon. Wild Wild West.

    • Those ten days can definitely make a difference on getting a kid you need or not. Just look at the kids who’ve already declared their destinations. Now, I have no doubt that if there’s a big talent out there who Kirby believes he’ll need, he’s already on it.. but at the same time, he may not know exactly who he needs and thus may not have known who to be Crootin during the last 2 weeks.

Every hour-long strategy session for the NCG game plan was an hour he and his staff weren’t talking to potential transfers. It makes a difference.

Of course, having that ring will make a difference, too.

Once you are ten days behind, if you don’t catch up, a year later, you are in the same relative place you were the year before not any further behind.

I hope we stay 10 days behind our competition every year from now on.

In earlier posts various dawgs have asked when we quit celebrating guess we have the answer?

I’d say Saban and Kirby giving the others a 10-day head start is only fair. You think the former coach known as The Portal Master was working his ass off over those 10 days?

PS: Give me the names of the college coaches that wouldn’t give their left nut to have that 10 day “disadvantage”

Geoff Collins is the luckiest. He has a 43 day head start on Georgia. Great planning on his part!

Letting folks know that he’s constantly sweating even the small shit is simply another part of Kirby’s plan. From that “leaked” pre-WLOCP motivational speech to these little tidbits of angst Kirby is always promoting his product. He’s Smart enough to realize that results aren’t always enough to maximize the effects of perception. Reality needs a boost and he’s on the mutha.
Shiiiiit man, I’d wager Kirby doesn’t drive to the convenience store for gas and beer without an alternate to his alternate plan. Being successful consistently requires more than hope and luck. I’m certainly grateful CKS is on our side.
And one more thing. In the words of Charles Barkley,
    “How ’bout them Dawgs!”

I like Barkey and had to appreciate his admission that he was hoping for a tie, but would rather Georgia win. At least he didn’t say he was hoping for a meteor like I would in similar situation.

And his plan is to send somebody for that beer and gas because he ain’t got time for that shit. His alternate is to have somebody else as backup to take care of that shit. Same reason he ain’t got time for roads and traffic and takes a chopper. The man works smarter than anybody out there.

This and the Lanning post earlier helps fuel my confidence that Kirby is on the mutha. That said, man, it’s okay to celebrate Kirby! Go destroy some property or something and don’t be a Sabanbot. Soak in that joy so you’ll have fuel for your next run.

I love it. Kirby Smart didn’t feel any weight lifted off of his shoulders and he didn’t feel any pressure go away, either. He wants to win the next one. He’s hungry and he’s determined and we’re lucky to have him.

Let’s see, we gotta round up and issue tickets to about a hundred ’23, ’24 and ’25 recruits for Saturday; follow up on about 30 portal contacts; maybe fill a coaching slot or two; finish the list of Dawgs entering the draft or portal; organize the winter workout schedule; facility improvements; NIL; various contracts…

Yep, all with the burden of being mentioned 24×7 on every sports show for ten days, numerous commercials, every Jan 1 halftime report and totally controlling ESPN 1, 2, U, app, for a full evening.

Oh, and beating Darth, and being named consensus and CFP national champions.

Sign me up for 2023 please.
