Needed to build a bigger portal

This is something.

When it came to in-state recruiting, Dan Mullen didn’t erect a fence.  He threw out the welcome mat.

Over time, it’s only going to be more puzzling to think of all the pundit takes about Mullen’s recruiting not being that big a hurdle for him to overcome.

FSU, Miami and FU all should never be as bad as all 3 are currently. The talent within in the state is enough for all 3 schools to be top 10 each year. Miami has enough talent within 50 miles of the campus to be in the cfp every year.

It is something that all of them could wallow in mediocrity for so long. Especially Miami. Just goes to show that the people running the show at all three of schools are clueless as ever.

Just damn, seriously Ohio State basically 1,000 miles away not even in ACC or SEC? There is the argument that the big three divides some of the recruits but that many years in a row for no Fla team to win is ridiculous!
Would love to see who was second and third those years.

  5. This doesn’t surprise me at all…every season we read stats on how FU was not closing the recruiting gap…and then, to add insult to injury we would go read Swamp Shit 247 to see the local Hogtown delusional take and make fun of the jort wearing mouth breathers.

This was like watching a slow motion train wreck…you knew what the outcome was going to be, it just took time for the walls to fall in on Sideshow.

It’s the fact that the media didn’t see it sooner that still chaps my hide.

I got from one of those recent posts that Mullen pretty much threw in the towel when NIL came down the pike. Seems he may have begun the check-out in 2020 in hopes of getting a position in the NFL where he doesn’t have to deal with all that.

Worth noting that Aaron Murray said Mullen recruited him for UF just fine back in the day and that Murray actually liked him (but didn’t like Meyer). So, something changed for Mullen between 2010ish and 2020ish.

Aaron Murray may have been an isolated case. Granted, Meyer is the source and you have to consider the source, but in Meyer’s book he says that Mullen was nearly responsible for Florida losing Tim Tebow as a recruit – he just didn’t like the dude. He comes across so weird in interviews and videos that I can see kids not warming up to him in a recruiting process.

Ok, so not trying to dispute what you say, but adding to the picture…if you have a subscription this is an interesting article. “Coach 1: With Dan Mullen leaving the state, I thought he recruited the state really well. He and Hugh Freeze were able to win those battles in state and understood the landscape in Mississippi better than any other coaches have. I don’t think Mike Leach has a grasp of it right now, and I don’t think Lane Kiffin cares to recruit Mississippi. That’s just me. To be honest … I don’t think Lane cares enough about recruiting to want to have to fight the battle for the kid. He’d rather show up, be Ole Miss and win it. Whereas Dan and Hugh, they kind of thrived on that competition of recruiting and winning it. And Mike I don’t think understands it. Both of them want coaches on their staff to handle it, and they’ll come in and close it at the end if they have to. Both of them are exceptional coaches, but I don’t know if they’ll dominate the state anymore like it was during Hugh and Dan’s time.”

        • The irony of it all, and I really give 2 rips about Mullen and his career (especially at FU), but the only criticism that was able to stick on his Teflon jorts was how bad of a recruiter he was. The media alluded to it, the fans twisted themselves in knots trying to compensate for it…he could coach up talent of 3 & 4 stars and do more in the portal…that’s why the title of Bluto’s post is “Needed” a bigger portal…because Mullen never got it done during recruiting season. There is no excuse for FU not to be a major player in getting top tier recruiting classes…I’m glad they’re not, but they should be.

It’s interesting that it is multiple out of state teams have been able to take the title. 5 consecutive years that the state of Florida has been shut out in its own house.

Not just Mullen, but also the revolving doors at Florida State and Miami. It’s remarkable that the Big 3 + UCF have all just allowed their best talent to leave the state. Clemson’s fortunes have changed in a major way thanks to the mismanagement of Florida’s football programs, but so have a lot of other programs’, ours included.

Florida now suffers from Auburn/UT syndrome (they think they provide a cush job where coaches can win easily. They do not). Also the administrators seem to think they played some role in the football program’s historical successes. They did not, aside from picking two excellent coaches. Since then…. Not so much

Miami thinks they can win without fully committing (they can’t).

FSU… they’re insane… but they are by far the most likely to eventually rebound. Not if they keep hiring B level coaches though.

The facilities issues at Florida aren’t as bas as Miami, but they have been close apparently. I think they’re doing some big time work on that front now, but yeah, you make a very good point … the administrations didn’t do jack for Florida’s 1990-2008 successes. That was all Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer. Georgia didn’t get to the level we’re on now until Kirby Smart (with an assist from Jeremy Pruitt of all people before him) got Butts-Mehre on board with what it takes to win big.

“cush job where coaches can win easily”

That does not exist in CFB.

It was just wishful thinking. “If Mullen can do it so can all these other teams!” He couldn’t. They can’t. Coaches don’t take a single snap; players do. You better have good ones.

My guess is the number of kids from all over the country that are considered Florida recruits because they go to IMG skews this considerably.

It just shows how lazy national writers and talking heads are once a meme is started. Dan Mullen we were told was a great QB whisper who could coach up his guys better than Kirby ever would. The FU school of journalism is well represented among CFB writers. They are already busy working on pumping up their latest savior coach.
To them all “ How many long suffering days has it been since FU won a NC?”

“Dan Mullen didn’t erect a fence.”
You mentioned the lack of a fence around Florida. (Understood as the cause for Florida teams recruiting numbers).
The opposite of that is what Kirby has done in the state of Georgia, and I believe one of the reasons FSU has not made a comeback. They used to pull top talent out of Thomasville and Valdosta, maybe even the bottom half of our state.
The work started by CMR and completed with CKS has the Florida teams fighting for the scraps in the wake of excellent UGA recruiting.

Also, other than a frankly awesome but dated stadium, UF has had crap facilities for the last few years. Last year, when my son was recruited there we were shocked at how bad the facility was. No better than Tech. Now, that will change when they open the new one, but the facilities do matter.

Exactly. Their administration’s been sitting around patting themselves on the back for Spurrier and Meyer’s accomplishments for well over a decade. Meanwhile both of those coaches have had successful third acts elsewhere, and Florida’s last title is about as relevant as UT and Nebraska’s on the recruiting trail.
