Still the best

The Athletic’s Max Olson goes back to re-rank the 2018 recruiting classes.  Georgia, remember, finished first at the time.  And now, with hindsight?

1. Georgia

You were expecting Florida there?

You should read the whole thing, but I’ll give you a little taste here.

  • “No. 1-ranked classes make No. 1 finishes possible. Georgia signed seven five-stars, 12 of the top 100 nationally and five of the top six in-state recruits.”
  • “Among the 18 signees who stayed in the program, 15 started more than 10 games.”
  • “The success of Georgia’s 2018 recruiting class can be measured in so many other ways. But given where this program was when they arrived on campus, we can sum up their legacy like this: They got the job done.”

Amen to that.

Consider this your morning Dawg porn.

Those attrition numbers cited for each class are insane. Alabama at 48% attrition? Georgia at 36% seems almost low. Really eye opening to see that even the “GOAT” Nick Saban processed out nearly half that class.

“But given where this program was when they arrived on campus” Not sure what he is implying, but it sounds like he is saying the program was not in a good place. In reality, if it weren’t for a bunch of cheating refs we would have been National Champions when they arrived on campus.

The number 4, number 13 and number 16 were interesting. The list was not about just acquiring the best high school players. The methodology acknowledged good work by coaching staffs for bringing out the best in players. MuLLLLLLen would have been number 1 with a bullet according to The Daily Gator this time last year, but wasn’t.

It will be interesting to look back in five years on A$M’s huge class from this year. Somehow, I don’t think they’ll be talking about the NC that A$M just won. More likely, it will be a “what happened to…” article. But I guess we’ll see.

If you read the Olson article also check the the latest in the series by Seth focusing on Beal, Poole, and others who stayed and didn’t enter the portal. It’s good stuff.
