Do I really even need to say this?

Sure, it’s Mark Bradley, but this appears to be a fairly common take about Georgia’s hire of Mike White:

Here’s the thing, though: I can’t imagine many Gators fans are crushed he’s leaving. I wouldn’t take that as the greatest of signs.

Allow me to retort.  Since when do I give a shit what Florida fans think about anything?  A year ago, they all thought Dan Mullen was a better coach than Kirby Smart.  Look where that got them.

Made Elite 8 a few years ago. Change of scenery so who knows? And also screw the Gators and Bradley, too.

As it was stated, he can’t do worse than Crean. Let’s see if he can match the Kirby standard in recruiting. If so, he’s a keeper. I would like to see some “24/7” comments from Gator fans to see what their true reactions are to him jumping ship.

I’m on record saying Crean couldn’t be worse than Fox, but now that Crean has nearly set the bar at zero wins, I think I’m confident White can’t be worse than Crean. I think.

Don’t look at 24/7 for their reaction you probably won’t like it.

Given the current state of the program I don’t think he can do anything except make it better. That he left Gainesville shows he smart enough to learn from his mistakes.

I think that a lot of them are happy he is gone. The Gainesville Sun on Saturday called for a coaching change following their 19-13 season and loss to A&M in the SEC tournament. Initially, I was like “WTF?” but the hire has grown on me. Gators went to the NCAA tournament 4 times in his 6 seasons, made an Elite 8, and won at least one game in each appearance and this in an era where the SEC gets an average of 6.7 teams in the tournament each year and in the last two years of Billy Donovan the league averaged 3.7 teams (and just under 5 teams during the two decades Donovan was at the helm). His Louisiana Tech stint was 101 wins in four seasons (including when I watched them woodshed Georgia in Athens). Under White Florida averaged over 20 wins. By all accounts he is a good man. In our current league there are three teams embroiled by scandal under the FBI operation and he never has been mentioned. It is a pretty solid family with his dad the former AD at Notre Dame and current AD at Duke. His brother is the AD at Tennessee, another brother is AD for Florida Atlantic, and his sister is an assistant AD at SMU. He apparently can recruit.

Basketball is the one area where I do actually pay attention to what Bradley writes, for good or for ill. While I am still scratching my head over this hire, I do concede that White is a high floor kind of guy. I have little doubt that he will have a better career here than any of the three before him. Can he gt us beyond that, to what we thought Tubby and then Harrick were capable? I dunno.

I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed at first, and when I texted a couple of Gator friends about it, one of them was not at all upset about it. Another I know was pretty ecstatic. I think my problem was I’m looking for us to reach levels like what we’re seeing out of Auburn or Arkansas. But when I thought about it more, and what I’ve said about Crean in the past, was that if we got to the NCAA’s every other year, and occasionally won a game or two, we’re doing pretty well. And Mike White can probably do that for us.

This is a job in pretty bad shape, but we don’t have to recruit like Duke or UK to have success. We just have to recruit at a better level than what Mark Fox did. Regularly get instate 3 and 4 star players that you can get to stick around for 3 to 4 years and that’s a recipe for solid success, especially if you can plug in some good players from the transfer portal. I don’t know if there’s time for that player development anymore, but if you can do that (perhaps by not creating a toxic environment for the team), Georgia can be a good program, which is all I’m asking for at this point. I’d love to see us make some big noise, but for right now, I’d really love for us to not be terrible.

And I think the statement about White having a high floor is what this hire is about. We know what Crean’s ceiling was, but his floor was pretty low. We don’t know what the floor is for the mid-major guys who either haven’t shown they can recruit at this level or coach at this level. We’ve seen what White can do. No it’s not Billy Donovan. But it appears to not be Tom Crean either.

  7. From what little I’ve read, the reception for this hire is lukewarm. Administration must of seen something in him that we casual observers don’t, which means we will have to trust their instincts–which is not exactly a recipe for hope. Hope he can prove the doubters wrong.

Maybe, but it’s still a “UGA” job. That makes it attractive.

        • Attractive programs don’t have to overpay an out of work coach like Crean to take the job.

You are dreaming if you think Brooks was beating off big name coaches with a stick. Outside of White, the choice was going with the mid-major flavor of the month or an unproven assistant.

No it is not at all attractive even with it being at UGA.. We are one of the worst programs in the nation right now. The fact that Josh Brook’s was able to go out and hire a head coach that has 6 NCAA wins since 2017 and we have had 2 wins since our 1983 run is a huge accomplishment by ADJB. This is a great hire!!!

Too smart to take the job? There was a coordinated lobbying effort by people close to him all week for him to get the job. He’s a career assistant for bad to mediocre staffs that was passed over for the Western Carolina head job last year, and the current staff in he’s on may be fired soon at Xavier. His name doesn’t come up for any other opening in the country. He may be very well coming home, but it’s going to be as an assistant for White.

I was hoping they were smart enough to have offered him the job and he had turned it down. That would make the hire of White more palatable than them skipping over Jonas to take White.

Clearly you didn’t read or hear what Josh Brooks said about the candidates for this job. HC experience (preferably P5) was high on his list of qualifications. I do think we’ll make a serious run at Jonas for AHC and maybe HC to be after Mike White.

I did not read or hear that, but Kirby worked out pretty well w/o any prior HC experience. Same for a guy named Vince Dooley. I would have been happier with a hot coach from a smaller school than a retread from a P5 that was on shaky ground. I don’t think P5 experience is nearly as important in basketball as it is in football. I hope White makes me eat my words, but I’m not overly concerned at this point that I will have to. Now if the goal is to better than Crean, I doubt he will fail. If the goal is regular March Madness appearances with runs deep into the tournament…..??

That’s my take. To me it looks like we’re shooting for respectability at best. Maybe that’s a first step and then Brooks has the balls to fire a respectable coach and try to get someone that can make us actually good at basketball. But I’m not holding out hope.

              Liked by 1 person

            • If you’re looking for regular & possibly deep runs in the tourney, that will require a complete overhaul of the entire program, facilities, coaching, recruiting, & financial commitment. It will take a difference similar to the change from the football program under Goff to what we have now. They need to start by building a brand new facility & stop putting lipstick on the pig that is the coliseum. That thing was outdated when I was there in the 80’s. Would love to see it, not holding my breath.

If they start winning on a regular basis, The Steg goes from a dump to a quaint facility with history and charm. Winning cures everything. I doubt Cameron Indoor Stadium would be looked at quite so fondly if the Blue Devils were perineal cellar dwellers.

Saw a tweet from Graham Coffey that Jonas may come as part of the staff. Obviously not a done deal or anything, but Jonas is the recruiter we need from what I hear. Don’t know much about Mike White, really, but it does seem like he was unhappy in Gainesville (who wouldn’t be?) and even knowing what we have now was willing to come. I hope it works.

I think my initial reactions was more tuned into this rumor floating around – why help out a rival by bailing them out of a buyout. I’ve since read that he likely would not have been fired this year. Sounds like White maybe wanted a fresh start with more realistic expectations for his program.

I wish him good luck. I think we all have to accept that UGA basketball just isnt a very attractive job despite being the best coaching job in America according to Staples.

  15. Hmm…. I can’t pretend to follow college basketball very closely. I didn’t even know who Mike White was before I Googled him just now. But it appears he had a .500 or better conference record in every one of the seven years he was at UF.

Crean was 0/4 in this metric, Fox was 6/9.

Seems to me like it could be an upgrade.

Probably the best we could do. I guess best case is he gets us to playing above .500 ball consistently and get into a tournament every couple of years and then we get a good coach.

Or rinse and repeat, sort of like this time.

  17. If I’m Josh Brooks, I would have called all the major power brokers and simply asked “are we committed to BB or not?”. If yes, I fire Crean a few weeks ago to let the world know we’re in market. I pull the players aside and beg for unity and some positive PR about the program. Then I get a hiring committee to find our best option for HC. But if the answer was NO…then I ride Crean out, take a few days, grab whatever HC I can that knows the territory.

I’m afraid I know which situation this is…hope Josh and White can prove me wrong.

He would have flushed several million dollars in buyout money if Brooks fired Crean a few weeks ago. His buyout dropped to under 4 million waiting for the end of the season. And it’s not like the world didn’t know Crean was going to be fired. That was pretty much known after last season.

Supposedly UGA did hire a firm to act as a hiring committee. Not sure how they could have done their job properly with teams still playing in conference tournaments and getting geared up for other postseason play.

Obviously this has been in the works behind the scenes.

  18. We’ll see about this hire, but honestly, I’m glad we didn’t hire the flavor of March mid-major coach from Where’s That? State U. Since Tubby, we’ve had no success on that track.

I have said there is no reason we can’t be the equivalent of UF hoops. I guess we’re going to find out.

I wanted either Jonas or a non-retread Power 5 coach. This seems like a solid hire to start with.

It’s never comforting to a new fan base, when the team losing its coach is blase, at best.

By way of analogy, when Grantham left us to go to Louisville very few people here were disappointed and many were ecstatic!

  20. My challenge to people would be, this seems win-win for Georgia:
    1) White comes here and crushes it, Gator fans are frustrated and annoyed that we stole “a great one” from them. Win.
    2) White comes here and performs at lower than his average from Florida. This is still miles better than what we’ve had under Crean, and puts us in position to hire the next coach who can take us further. Win.

    Where’s the lie?

UGA just hired a guy who with two more wins makes yet another March madness. Georgia just fired a guy who with 4 more wins totals 10. Whether they agree or not Florida and Tennessee are at this moment in time basketball schools and that makes it tough in the SEC East for the Dawgs. We are closer to being the Vanderbilt football team than to the Kentucky basketball program. Give this guy a chance. Ain’t no Kirby Smart of basketball coaches coming to save the Dawgs. Now go pull in Jonas Hayes.

I know people love the cult of the coach. Every fans base thinks they are one smart hire away from a championship.

Kirby has said that you can’t out coach talent. It’s also true that you can out recruit money.

For basketball UGA needs to spend a bunch of money, just like they did with football to catch up to the top teams. Unfortunately for the reserve fund, inflation is going to make catching up really expensive.

But nothing about Mike White makes me think he is good enough as a coach to make up the difference.

Win/win is the right perspective. Each program can get something that it wants. We get a coach that can consistently win and get us to the tournament occasionally, while UF can get someone that is more capable of competing for championships. Or UF can hire someone who completely fails and flames out. Either way, I’m fine with this hire.
