Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken is now among the highest paid assistant coaches nationally after the school gave him a huge raise this offseason.
Monken will make $2 million annually after coming off a national championship season in his second season with the Bulldogs, according to information obtained Thursday by the Athens Banner-Herald in an open records request.
That’s a $750,000 raise from the $1.25 million Monken made last season.
The contract term wasn’t disclosed, but it they want to make it a lifetime deal, I wouldn’t argue.
In Todd we trust.

Pay him more and make sure he has an apprentice locked in when he leaves, too.

I was under the impression that was Buster Faulkner.

Hell, I don’t think $2 million is enough to keep him out of the NFL. The article doesn’t say if the 3 year contract was extended. He is in the final year of that deal.

I think our main competition for his services are head coaching opportunities in college. Coordinators are paid an average of $1 million in the NFL ranks, so he’s now north of those in terms of money. Of course, the head coaches in the pros do make more but if someone wanted to make him an NFL head coach I doubt any sum of money would persuade him to stay as a coordinator in college.

Hasn’t been yet. This is a bump over the $1.4 million he was scheduled to get this season.
I fully expect an extension is in discussion right now and has been for a while.

Make it 5 years with a nice BIG buyout.

With the way the draft works now, a QB really only needs A) 1 solid year of film before coming out and B) if you have a pro-style OC as a QB in that situation.
Short-answer is we are well-stocked at that position and those guys know he may not go anywhere for a while.

Best OC UGA has had in my lifetime. Fingers crossed there’s no analyst influencing the scheme to be “balanced”.

We may find out whether there’s an extension beyond this year about the same time we find out if Manning commits to UGA.

A friend of a friend of a guy who works at the gas station where Cooper buys smokes told me that Arch likes Monken, and loves the Athens bar scene. He is a guaranteed sign at this point.

I’ve lived on the perimeters of Manning country out here in MS for over 20 years now, and I can assure you the country club dad’s are already donating large amounts of money to UGA and it’s various sororities in the their daughter’s names. It’s a lock! 😉

We can finally retire the “why can’t we have nice things” meme at UGA.

I hope his contract is loaded with incentives and Monken stays for many years.
My intuition would be that someone in their mid-50’s would be looking to settle down and establish a legacy with more adulation from players and fans and less pressure than a head coaching job.
Sam Pittman proved me wrong about that. I reckon ambition drives these types to achieve more.

I think the difference between Todd and Sam is that Sam hadn’t had a taste of bigger responsibility – as far as I know he has only ever been an assistant coach, not even a coordinator. Todd has already been around and while there might be something he wants to do beyond Athens, I think it is going to have be very special. Right now, he can see that he’s going to get paid, the living situation in Athens is really good (even the coaches we fire hang around), and every December there are going to be a lot of brand new tools to work with. That’s going to be hard to beat.

Yeah, that’s how I would think, DDB. Especially after already enduring the rigors of an HC job. But then my ambition faded in conjunction with my testosterone level. What the fuck do I know?

So I went across the tracks to Dawgnation and saw where Mike Griffith put his Michigan State journalism degree to use and figured Monken’s raise at 80%. Math is hard. More like 60%. I reckon he can blame that on editing as usual.
What got my attention was a quote by Jere Morehead concerning Kirby’s upcoming raise, “He has earned the right to be compensated.”
I’d say the same for Monken. I agree with the Senator.

Hey RR,
Yesterday America gave the Congressional Gold Medal to the 5307th Composite Unit Merrill’s Marauders. As a decendent of a Marauder I was allowed to request an invitation to attend the ceremony in DC. But alas, as with so many events, it was switched to virtual. You can watch it on YouTube.
Made me proud…I wept.
