The art of clickbait

What makes for a good troll, the kind of Tweet or post that draws someone in, despite their better judgment?

Yeah, that’s pretty much it — totally subjective standards (“where the league’s QBs will rank by season’s end”, with no mention of what the rankings will be based on, or who’s doing the rankings), Young sitting first to give the list some degree of faux credibility, all in the service of teasing people looking at this to check out his podcast.  Because that list is intended to irritate a bunch of different fan bases.  Nicely done.

I guess SEC Mike doesn’t put any money where his mouth is. He doesn’t care much for Honky McFailson IV to repeat any of wins in the supposedly tuff games.
    Vegas don’t like SEC Mike
Here are the early lines in the “tuff games.”
    Where ya $$ at Mikey?

Georgia (-17.5) vs. Oregon (Atlanta, GA)
Georgia (-15) vs. Florida (Jacksonville, FL)
    Tennessee (+15.5) at Georgia
    Georgia (-16) at Kentucky
    Georgia Tech (+28) at Georgia

If he lists Bennett at #10, he should have Vandagriff at #2.

Objectively, you could probably make a case to put Bennett 6th or 7th on the grounds that to some extent his numbers are more a product of the team around him compared to the other guys on the list. I wouldn’t agree with it, but it’s not a terrible take. Of course, reasonable arguments are not going to generate the clicks.

DCs are lying awake at night figuring out ways to put pressure on Bryce Young. Auburn exposed his nervousness and regression to less than Heisman quality (my opinion only of course) when being furiously pursued.

(The bulk of my post went un-sent??)
the absence of the excellent tandem of M&W are some challenges he’ll face this year.
. If Saban can fix the nervousness problem (roll out more, quick passes before pressure develops, better blocking, etc) and can come close to replacing M&W, Young might be number one at the end of the season. If not, there are some other very good QB’s on that list that may not have those drawbacks.
But still Bryce’s ability to see a receiver breaking open and whip the ball to him in a heartbeat is amazing. I think the speed of Georgia’s offensive line getting after him kind of wore him down in the NC game. (I’m wandering around here) …Conditioning and experienced depth won us that game. We also beat Alabama for much of the same reasons in Jan. 2017 but were screwed out of the win.
It’s still the SECCG last year that is a mystery to me. Was it the flu?

Reality can be a bitch. I try not to run from it.

My opinion is that had both bama and uga played with identical qbs in 2021, we beat bama’s ass by 4 tds. I believe we were THAT much better than them across the board. We had big advantages nearly everywhere.

I firmly believe that and that gives you some idea of what I think of the respective talents of the qbs.

Pressuring the qb is the name of the game. You gotta find a way to affect him.

It seems that we did best with cover/spy and then chase. Probably would have worked better on the play above.

However, if Channing had rotated a half step sooner on that play… Boom MF-fer!

Guys like Young are a bitch to defend because they have answers for nearly everything. It would appear that the strategy that worked best was don’t let him get it out too quick OR hold it too long.

My read on the natty was that he was as frustrated with his receivers effort as he was with our defense. The pass just before the pick 6 to Ringo was a perfect example. How they don’t have 1st and goal there was a gift from the Almighty.

Larry must have called in a favor.

        • How about the last pass he threw that mattered? Did he look cool & collected then? I agree he’s a really good qb most of the time, but he does get rattled under consistent pressure. Not many qb’s don’t.

He certainly seems to perform well when he gets disrespected, so I’m really good with it. I kinda wish Monken would go back to saying he can’t play here because that worked out great for Georgia.

Since he’s been at UGA, every mistake he has made has been magnified by the groaning and bitching of many Georgia fans.
You would think he’s the only QB that ever throws a pic or makes a bad decision.
And many are slow to realize (or just admit) that he WAS the best we had last year because of his mobility and TOUGHNESS.
Those who still think the Dawgs won it all “in spite of SB” are pretty shallow in their trust of Monken and Kirby.
“He gives us our best chance to win” is enough for this pilgrim.
It’s hard enough being dawgraded by the media and rival idiots, but when your own fans are screaming “sub-par” from their perches, it takes a toll on your reputation.
I’m damn proud of SB and believe he’s going to have a great year.

I honestly believe there are some Georgia fans who are upset that we won the national championship with Stetson as the qb. I don’t know what the hell Stetson has to do to win them over and I hope he doesn’t care if he does or doesn’t.

The fans who don’t like Stetson can go back to pining for Zeier, Greene, Shockley, Stafford, Murray, Fromm, Eason and Daniels and that great “IF ONLY!” feeling when they fell short of winning a national championship. I’ll be happy to have Stetson.

There is a HUGE gap between appreciating what Stetson has done and believing he is a great qb.

I think he’s a legend, a hero and they should build him a statue and retire his jersey #. He pulled off the greatest triumph ever. He’s makes Rudy look like a gd joke. Our walk on won a natty as a starting qb.

That just doesn’t happen. There is no comparison to what he has done. Maybe David? As in David vs. Goliath? That far back you’d have to go.

We’ve won two natties in my life: one with the greatest college player ever and one with the greatest underdog ever.

But I don’t think he’s a very physically gifted or talented qb. And if I was forced to wager, I’m probably not taking the little guy with the slingshot in a rematch. Don’t mean I ain’t pulling for him or lack respect.

Hell, I think people who think he’s got ability are diminishing how great an accomplishment we saw. We saw the fucking impossible. Acting like he should be getting preseason love makes the impossible just seem a little bit less so.

Bourbon is simply corn and rye whiskey aged in charred barrels. PVW uses wheat instead of rye. The main ingredient that makes PVW so expensive is scarcity and marketing. No way I’d pay PVW prices. Just not into showing off.
It’s good whiskey, but it’s distilled in monster size copper or stainless stills. Really good whiskey is made 12 gallons at a time.

Alright then. I’ll run down store bought liquor again. Remember the first time you drank Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker or even Macallan? It was rough, right? With few exceptions the best whiskey or whisky is an acquired taste. The first liquor I drank was when I was 12. From a stone jug and it went down like water. I reckon you’d call that smooth. I drank too much and it was a bad night. I learned a hard lesson. Didn’t drink liquor for a long time afterwards. Boone’s Farm and homemade wine for me.
Started drinking liquor in the yankee Army and at UGA. Dr Bob Clute taught me to drink Johnnie Walker Black as no matter where in the world I was my drink would be available. I acquired a taste for good Scotch. Occasionally I drank what was considered the finest Scotch. “Nectar of the Gods”.
Bullshit. It’s all rough. Except for some made by true craftsman in small batches. Just because it was made in small batches doesn’t mean it’s good. But occasionally I ran across some that takes great restraint not to drink until I drop.
1982 as a new Lt at 2 week training the First Sergeant passed around cups of some clear primo smooth. I watched Captains who in their civilian guise were lawyers and doctors make utter fools of themselves drinking that stuff as if it was water. I sipped. Ol Top says, “ You know what you’re drinking don’t you, sir?”
                  Yes I do.
We sipped for a few hours watching the O’s laugh, argue, fight and ultimately pass out. They were all fine the next morning. Good liquor drank straight leaves not much of a hangover.
In ‘85 a senior NCO from an East Tennessee reserve unit gave me a quart of “charted shine”. Best brown liquor I ever drank. Like water going down and fire breathing out.
The best liquor I ever had was at my dad’s. I came in to turn in the unexpended explosives and do paperwork and get stuff for the next job about noon. Dad, a few of his cousins and Uncle Bury were sipping from a stone Henry McKenna jug. All old timing, successful hard men. Not an alcoholic amongst them. But they were laughing and cheerful.
“Have a drink, boy!” It went down clear & smooth and upon exhale I tasted a hint of peaches. That was the best drink I ever had. Drank some again the night of Dad’s funeral and for a few days after.
Any of those drinks made Pappy Van Winkle taste like swill.
Horndog Hans brought me a liter of 16 year old Single Malt from Costco. Holy shit! That was the stuff. I told him to buy all he could get. Alas, it was gone. That stuff was as close to true chartered ‘shine as anything I’d drank. Very similar to that from East Tennessee without the high alcohol content. Everything else I’ve drank with a label on the bottle simply doesn’t compare.

                  You’re most welcome, sir.
I don’t know how how to make liquor and wouldn’t if I could. I’m above board in most aspects of my life. I’m under serious scrutiny resulting from my business and NFA hobbies.
But I knew someone who DID know how. That afternoon I drank the peach “brandy” with dad n’em I asked dad where he got it. He told me from a fellow up in Rabun county.
Uncle Bury told Pop to stop blowing smoke up my ass.
“Your daddy made that liquor, boy. He’s been making liquor since he was six years old. He makes better selling liquor than everyone else’s drinking liquor.”
It seems dad couldn’t be trusted as the revenoor watch as he was bad to shoot squirrels. The shot sent the cooks running and the liquor scorched. So they had dad help make liquor instead. They all went off to WW2 and he perfected his craft as a young man.
Dad told me that the Firefox book was a great source to learn how to make liquor right. A couple of things he did differently that made his special.
For those old fuckers to brag on one of their own was almost unheard of. They gave each other hell. But they all agreed my dad made fine liquor.
                  It’s a shame that I never learned.

Who gives a shit about rankings? The object of the game is to win, not pad your stats. Stetson seems to have that objective clearly in view and has proven he can execute the game plan needed. I will be happy with an SEC championship followed by a repeat NC with the #10 QB at the helm. You can keep your stat padding losses.
I wonder how they can expect Young to be number 1 without Metchie and Williams. That just seems A Bridge Too Far.
