Picked up my copy of the 2022 Preview yesterday, and as is my want, on the first day I just tend to wander randomly through the contents. Here’s a factoid that caught my eye:
If the 12-team playoff was in effect back to 2014 then 14 teams in that 7-year span would have been in the playoffs with 3 losses.
But think of all the extra money the P5 would have taken in over that time! Seems like a fair tradeoff, at least to Mickey.
If they can let unranked 18-17 teams into the basketball tournament without blushing, they’ll let 3 loss teams into the football playoff. In some ways I’m surprised it’s taken so long.

Because winning the Poulan Weedeater Bowl should mean something. It’s only fair Cinderella.

A little contradiction in Steele’s example because, if these 12 teams play a conference/superconference championship games which count as a quarter final playoff game, then that’s a 3rd loss.
If the conf champ games don’t count as a playoff, then there is no guarantee that the 3 loss conf runner up teams get an invite over another 3 loss team.
