Opportunity is nowhere.

Rodney Garner, embracing the Tennessee tradition of empty sloganeering…

“We’ve got to take a step forward,” Garner said Monday during a news conference. “I think we exceeded the expectations for everybody except for the guys in the room and probably the coaching staff, but nobody came to Tennessee to say they want to be 7-6. That is not the standard.

“We are moving in the right direction, but everybody, when they look in the mirror, can see where we can get better. If we want to be great, then we’ve got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s what it takes.”

I thought it took scoring more points than the other team, but that’s probably not very inspiring.

1998 seems like a loooooong time ago. Here’s hoping the streak in Knoxville keeps growing.

    • I believe most high school players have never seen Tennessee be relevant. Most at best were toddlers the last time they played in a SEC championship game.

They last won the East in 2007 so high school seniors would have been 3 years old. That said; NIL is going to make this sort of thing irrelevant.

It’s still an open question if the money runs out before the NCs arrive at current also rans. And the current lords of CFB arent going to just stand by and let the arrivistes take it from them.

Kinda hard to believe that South Carolina played for an SEC championship more recently than Tennessee.

      Remember how 2002 felt?

UT’s dry spell is now 4 years longer than ours was. And it ain’t raining in Knoxville any time soon.

I know a little bit about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. That ain’t all it takes to be great, Rodney. But it does make it easier to accept getting your face rubbed in Dawg shit.
    Again.

  3. Its like they have a coaching guild official book of useful slogans. Each chapter covers a different situation. “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” is from the one on summer camp. Another favorite from that chapter is “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” This stuff has been in rotation since before Nick Saban was in short pants.

I still remember “Unfinished Business” from the off-season of 20 years ago. Heard/read it mentioned so often that I wondered if they were actually talking about the half-dozen full trays remaining after Not-Yet-Phullmer’s latest visit to Dunkin Donuts the night before. I guess that they thought they were all set to inherit the SEC after Spurrier departed for the NFL. Little did they know.

“Coach speak” is another version of “corporate speak”. They all use the same tired clichés and the fans gobble it up.

“If we score, we may win. If they never score, we’ll never lose.”…there is your philosophy, DAWG style!

Rodney wants to make sure they’re all rowing in the same direction so they can take the bull by the horns and get the ball rolling.

Rodney’s bigger problem is his HC’s offensive philosophy. Going fast is really great until the defense figures you out or you just miss a throw or two; then your DL is gassed before you know it and the big OL on the other side is just steamrolling you the whole second half.

Well one thing about Rodney is his guys are usually going to be hitting late and trying to kill your QB. Hope the SEC refs give us just a little bit of what they have been giving Bama for years (protection).

Rodney Garner is the guy who had the d-line get worn down in clutch situations all those times, right?

  13. “probably the coaching staff”?

That translates to “there may have been a coach that was so bewildered this bunch of toddlers could tie their shoes correctly that winning 7 games seemed an impossibility.”
