Shots fired in Lexington

“Honey, while you’re in the kitchen, could you bring me that big bag of popcorn?  Think I’m gonna need it.”

Good luck with that on the recruiting trail, Mark.

That should make good fodder for his 30 for 30 part 2.

One could argue that it’s the relative success of the football team that has somewhat distracted the UK faithful from the fact they haven’t won a basketball natty in 10 years.

Yep Hogbody, Bear lost this fight to Adolph Rupp decades ago.

Story goes that ole Bear got a cigarette lighter following the best season the blue pussycats ever had…
Rupp got a new Cadillac after basketball season!
Ole Bear headed to Greater Bryan, Tejas immediately after!

  7. I guess Calipari doesn’t like having someone be an overachiever because he has definitely been an underachiever.

Better get some good bourbon, too. Line up some shots for a game of “Drink when Cal says something stupid.” You will be blind drunk soon and waste the good bourbon.

The ice under Cal’s feet is thinner and thinner. He has blown some good chances lately and been flat out bad on others. His schtick grows tired. The natives are restless. There are reasons they care more about football than they used to care: Stoops has done a very good job and Cal hasn’t. The clock on Calipari is ticking towards dismissal and he feels the pressure. These people like football. They live, breathe and die for basketball. UK basketball. Period. Precisely when Calipari could have rested on the entire program’s success, he crapped all over it.

Kentucky football was responsible for $44M in revenue. Kentucky basketball was responsible for $29M in revenue.

Calipari might want to check himself before he wrecks himself.

While UK’s fanaticism about basketball over football is well-documented, here is my take on what UK fans like, in order, based on my observations on the internets of their fanbase, and my one trip to Lexington in the early 2000’s:

    1) Mens’ basketball
    2) Yelling at referees and officials*
    3) Horse racing**
    4) Maybe womens’ basketball?
    5) Football

*UK fans get more exercised over football ref’s bad calls than they do big plays, based on what I saw in Lexington

**At that same game, I saw more portable TVs in the stands with UK fans watching the ponies run instead of the football game in the field. When the race was over, they turned their attention to the referees, as we
we’re beating their ass at that point. (Portable TVs…hard to believe that was only 16-17 years ago lol)

Was listening to ESPNU with Dusty and Danny this AM. They were discussing this. They hit the nail on the head. Stoops has done more with less. Cal has done less with more. Probably feeling the heat of some of those donor dollars now going to football instead of hoops.

Probably a little easier for Stoops to deal with this on the recruiting trail than it is for Mike White to refute it.
