The Dawg that didn’t bark

Something unusual about Georgia’s offseason, you say?  What might that be ($$)?

Georgia: Before you start yelling, see my upset prediction below. It’s not an accident that Georgia didn’t take any transfers this offseason. Despite losing 15 players to the draft, Kirby Smart looked at his roster, looked at what was available and said, “I think the players I have are all better.” That should scare the hell out of the rest of the SEC.

Georgia: Kirby Smart did something this offseason that I don’t think many people noticed. Georgia did not sign any players out of the transfer portal. Not one. Coming off their national title, I’m sure they could’ve brought in almost anyone they wanted. Didn’t need ‘em. What does that tell you? It tells me Smart really likes his roster and doesn’t see big deficiencies that can’t be solved by the Bulldogs’ young blue-chip talent. I’m not too worried about whether they’ll be able to reload and find some new stars on both sides of the ball.

That makes two… er, three of us.

It’s interesting to see how the pundits view us. “Well, they did win last year (BUT ONKY BECAUSE METCHIE AND WILLIAMS WAS HURT, PAWWWWWWL), but now Nick is really mad, and Ohio State has suddenly learned how to play defense. UGA can probably win the east, which sucks, but they can’t beat Angry Alabama or Complete Ohio State. UGA list too much talent. ”

    FTMF.

It never occurs to anyone our roster is as deep as Alabama’s. A lot of the players we sign would have hone to Alabama 10 years ago. Ohio State got roundhouse by Michigan last year despite THE GREATEST OFFENSE EVER Our O trashed the Michigan D that throttled that OSU offense.

I’m not saying we will repeat. But all the pundits who are dismissing us out of hand might be in for a rude awakening. Ready or not, here we come.

Nobody is talking about how soft Ohio State has gotten under Day.

I was listening to that show that Barrett Sallee and Tom Luginbill host on ESPNU satellite radio yesterday driving around doing things. One of the guest media types I heard was all in on Ohio State saying that the new DC hired this offseason should make that defense light years better than Ohio State’s defense the last several years that was the Achilles heel for that team and that Ohio State would be the toughest out in CFB this year for anyone including Bama. Basically, he postulated that it would be an unstoppable offense and a Bama-like defense.

And to 81’s original post, in the same show yesterday a different guest was discussing CFP contenders. Georgia didn’t get dismissed due to Bama playing in the same conference. No. Georgia didn’t get even get mentioned as a team to watch for in the playoff. I was pretty shocked. Bama, tOSU, Clemson, maybe A&M if they get by Bama in Tuscaloosa, potentially USC, etc. But no mention of the Dawgs.

One prediction has us playing tOSU in the CFP and losing.

I like that show somewhat, but Sallee and Luginbill hate UGA. At least Barrett will admit it. You can get decent info/insight about a lot of things, or at least entertainment, but it’s hard to get a reasonable opinion about UGA.

Compared to the dumb-pster fire that is Desmond Howard’s brain, they seem ok. I dont hate Des, but his picks for the CFP this year are the single dumbest thing I’ve seen since S Carolina fans under Spurrier confidently predicting them to win an SECC every august.

Yeah, I know. I listen Barrett and Tom more because it is about college football in general and it is better than what the national ESPN radio coverage is that is broadcast on 680 The Fan on Sundays and most of the hosts on Sunday on 92.9 The Game are way more centered on the Falcons, Braves, Hawks, and United (as to Falcons, Hawks and United I understand that as they are the official radio broadcast partner for those teams). With Barrett and Tom you just have to know that you aren’t getting very deep and well-thought out content about teams.

As for Desmond Howard, I could at least understand picking a wild card to shake it up. But to not have any of Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, or Clemson in favor of Michigan, Pitt, A&M and Baylor is clownishly absurd. And stacking that on top of questioning why CJ Stroud considered by some to be the Heisman front-runner is equally buffoonish (and bordering on such Michigan homer-ism that he should be getting every bit of negative coverage possible).

You need a true sociopath to install discipline when you are Ohio State and he is calling games for Fox. I think Ohio State gets in the playoff but with a loss.

  2. 4 of us. I’ve been saying that since May. Kirby likes the team he has built. Would he have brought in Caleb Williams? Probably, but everyone knew that was a smoke screen for the tampering that OU’s former Boy Wonder engaged in. Other than that, we heard no rumors about the portal.

I thought he might try to find a punter through the portal while figuring out if the Aussie can do the job. He didn’t even do that.

    Didn’t read the article.
Did they mention Saban’s foray into the transfer portal to shore up his lack of development within his program?
Had to go get a left tackle from…
    VANDY!?!

    • Those guys are putting a lot of faith in Gibbs going from Fech to Bama.

Didn’t he practically quit on the Jacketasses at the end of the year?

I would have throttled back too if I had had to run against UGA.

Yesterday I watched Rece Davis say that Gibbs was a legitimate Heisman threat this year. I don’t know about that, but from what I watched of Gibbs in 2021 it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a monster year at Bama.

He scaled it back after deciding to run that kickoff back and being tackled at the 10 yard line.

I watched Gibbs in HS. I’ve not completely bought in on him yet. I will say he was good for north Georgia 7A ball

Exactly. Vandy ain’t Rhode Island but Bama 2022 ain’t Georgia in 2016 either. They lost Neal (who despite the buzz and high draft stock is being hinted at being a bust for his NFL team) Metchie, and Williams (aka 1998 Chris Carter and 1988 Jerry Rice) but will somehow be just as good on offense while also stemming in one off season a steep decline in tackling and in particular Defensive line play. I am probably wrong but Bama has a lot of early 2000s FSU smell to them.

Even our walk-ons would be the nucleus of a good team in the 2nd tier conferences.

We’ve got 60+ players on scholly who’ve been through an entire 15 game season, with plenty of rotation at most positions. Throw in a couple years through the S&C program. And these are mostly 4-star and 5-star kids to begin with. The cupboard is thoroughly stocked.

  6. Obviously, we’ll know a lot more after this upcoming Sat game…but all of last season was meticulously and designed (even when you consider the flu cut through them at the SECC)…the team just executed on all levels, and factoring in that roster management is one of CKS’s superpowers, I’m not surprised by his evaluation in his offseason roster…I’ll trust his and his staff’s evaluation.

Not having a bunch of rat poison in the offseason to deal with only helps Kirby & Co. as well. Go Dawgs!
