I know it’s rude to gloat in public…

… but, damn, this is too pathetic not to share.

After weeks of whining about the unfairness of conference title games by the access sports media — desperate to cover new teams in the playoffs rather than good ones — followed by “upsets” abounding over the weekend, those tasked with writing about the sports news rather than attempting to create it finally had their way: The conference title games were rendered absolutely useless. And their pathetic simpering trickled upwards to those who appointed themselves as sole arbiters of postseason fortunes.

It all culminated in a CFP Selection that was more about optics than data; geographic inclusivity than strength of schedule; human interest over quality.

The CFP Committee in essence signaled that quality wins are meaningless, that stepping outside of an average conference to schedule quality games is irrelevant, that not getting the shit kicked of you is unimportant. And, in just a few short weeks of inconsistent talking points and indefensible analysis, the Exalted rendered almost a decade of all prior CFP “rationale” moot.

I’m so glad we destroyed college football for this.

And I shan’t be watching a second of it, despite my disgust, frustration, and even disinterest with this iteration of the Alabama Crimson Tide. It really is about selecting the four best teams; the rightness of the cause. And there is no actuarial or analytical case that can be made for TCU’s inclusion.

They should put “not getting the shit kicked out of you is unimportant” on an Alabama t-shirt, my man.

And you know Kirby is going to be crushed to hear this from Mr. Evans:

Georgia is so bored with this season. And I honestly don’t think anyone in the playoffs will put up enough of a tussle to breakthrough that ennui. Enjoy your second ring, Kirby. I won’t be watching a second of this shit.

We’re all K-State fans now, aren’t we?

KState is the sort of team that can do that to you. Here’s to the Tide deciding they’re the bored ones.

Where are these tremendous Bama quality wins? Bama’s big OOC victory was by 1 over Texas, who TCU beat by a full TD (and against the starting QB).

As a lawyer, there is a concept known as “standing” to bring a lawsuit. The idea is that one must have suffered actual injury that is relatively unique to that person/entity in order to bring a lawsuit.

This brings me back to Alabama and this statement….

Saban mentioned Bryce Young’s midseason injury as a reason why they should be included in the playoff, but conveniently omitted the fact that they squeaked by Texas’ backup QB.

I mean, they also won their last 3 games, that’s 3 and 0 in those last three games! But as someone on 680 mentioned this morning, one of those teams was an FCS team and the other was a team that fired its coach 2 months ago….

Yeah, Texas had at worst a safety and at best a fumble recovery in the end zone – at a time when Bama already had wobbly knees – but somehow the zebras gave Bama back the ball and a chance to find their footing….

What on God’s green earth does Bryce Young’s injury have to do with anything? This is the same mindset as “Metchie and Williams Paaaaaaaaaawl!” Why does Alabama think it isn’t fair when injuries happen to them and they should get some sort of special consideration? I guess losing AD Mitchell for the season and Jalen Carter for several games and being 13-0 pales in comparison. What a bunch of freaking cry babies and spoiled brats.

They only look at one side of the equation. Yes, Bama was 10-2 and four points separated them from 12-0 (I guess actually six points to win those two games). But Bama was 7 more points from being 8-4 with a loss to A&M and Texas.

Bama’s “best” win if you look at the CFP final top 25 was either 8-4 #20 Texas (with their backup QB) or 8-4 #22 Mississippi State. For all the fanfare and hype around Bama vs. Ole Miss, Ole Miss finished 8-4 but lost four out of its final five games and isn’t ranked in the top 25 at all.

Count me as as much against the 12 team CFP expansion as anyone, but there is certainly one benefit. You can’t get a bye in the first round without being the conference champion so the championship games matter. If this year were a 12 team year, yes Georgia would have still been in the playoff with a loss to LSU but Georgia would have been thrown into a first round game. 10-3 Utah would have a bye as the fourth highest ranked conference champion.

    • If LSU had won, the Byes are Michigan, KState, Clemson, Utah. LSU is still probably out of it and we open with Washington at home to put the whole “Dawg” thing to rest.

    • I’m not convinced that the 12-team playoff will be the death of college football. It’s going to solve as many problems as it creates. As you mention, it brings back meaning to the conference championships. And IMO, adding a round of meaningful, interregional games on college campuses will be glorious. I went to the Benz for the first time last weekend, and the culture shock of the sterile, corporate stadium was jarringly unfamiliar. A third of the seats on the lower level were empty at kickoff. Half the stadium (mostly Dawg fans) cleared out shortly after halftime. I know we had a big lead, but this was the MFing SEC championship game, and the atmosphere didn’t hold a candle to the UT game in Sanford Stadium.

I would tend agree that there will be problems and solutions from the 12 team playoff. What I do think is that a 12 team playoff as it is formatted to be with conferences that don’t have divisions like the Pac 12 has already gone to and the B1G and SEC are going to will mitigate some of the damage to the regular season caused by expanding the playoff if coaches see winning the conference championship and getting a bye in the first round of the CFP has tremendous value. If you have to finish first or second in the SEC in a 16 team conference with no divisions to get to the conference championship game, then regular season games don’t completely lose all their value.

        Like

        • The lower level seats ($$$) I’m assuming are mostly bought out by corporate types. Those guys don’t care about the game, they just want to impress clients. I was in the upper level with the season ticket holders. Our section (and the adjacent LSU sections) stayed almost full for the whole game, and they were as loud as they could be while only constituting a quarter of the crowd. The rest of the stadium was thoroughly red, just a little purple and gold scattered throughout, but they just cleared out by midway through the third quarter. I’m guessing these were some of the seats sold to Falcons season ticket holders? Not really sure. But I couldn’t believe how quickly the stadium emptied out. There was definitely less than a third of the crowd, maybe even a quarter, who stayed until 0:00. And the crowd was 85%+ UGA.

I remember going to the 2012 championship it was not like that at all. I think that the most exciting time to be a DAWG fan was 2017 and now the fan base views winning as automatic and disappointed if the game isn’t a blow out. I have never understood arriving late to a game nor leaving. People don’t do that for any other live entertainment. I think when the McGill Society started pushing out Hartman donors for SEC championship tickets you also lost some of the crowd excitement.

        • I went to the game with my Dad. He also went to the SEC championship game in 2017, and was utterly dismayed by the change in the crowd. Said it was unrecognizable. He didn’t go to the SEC championships from 2018, 2019, or 2021, but he did go to both nattys and the Oregon game earlier this year. I hate that complacency has sunk in with our fanbase. I’m sure the unexpected loss to Bama in last year’s championship game didn’t help. In any case, it definitely wasn’t the environment that I was expecting or hoping for.

I’ve been known to react harshly to Dawg fans who go negative in-game. I don’t think Dawg fans are spoiled. Yet. It’s simply that Georgia folks have always been a bit reserved in their enthusiasm. I believe it’s called “class”. They damn sure run to the sound of the guns when called on. The fans performance during the vols game this year and last season against Arkansas are unparalleled.

You’re correct about the Benz, it fucking blows, got about as much personality as an office building. I was also surprised by how sedate the crowd was and how fast it emptied out in the second half. I think it’s because everybody knew we were making the playoff regardless, hell even Kirby and some players had to kind of talk up what a big deal the SEC championship is. Disappointing nevertheless.

Is he mad a TCU or OSU? Who kicked the s out of TCU? TCU lost by 3 in OT.

OSU made the playoff only because the bylaws for the CFP said they have to put 4 teams in the field.

Alabama fans have been salty all year – they thought at some point they would to get play us and win. So they recommence their trash-talking – about UGA, our players and our coach.

Deep down this joker knows it wasn’t going to happen. He has watched UGA all year trying to find signs of weakness and couldn’t find one big enough to definitely sa Bama would beat us. The way we played Saturday, we would have beaten Bama 50-30.

The only solace he can take now is that we lose to OSU or in the Championship.

  25. Saturday, December 3, 2022. The end of the era. Georgia owns the East. Bama will continue to struggle in the West. After next season they can no longer hide. Either they face us in the regular season, or the SW Interlopers add to the fight Bama must face each year. They just don’t get better, but simply fight for parity.

Remember that date….end of the era.

    • And after what the Senator posted, he writes:

If any football teams or coaches out there don’t like how their seasons ended, or they came up just short this year in the moment, perhaps they will look back on this day as one they created for themselves with their own stupidity, inattention, apathy, and slovenliness. You, and you alone, put your fate in someone else’s hands; you have no right to whine about it after the fact.

Part of his whining is an indictment of the program and declaration of no right to whine. My head hurts from that twisted logic.

Yeah, yeah…forget it, it’s Bama town.

… except that TCU had a much better argument that Alabama did. Not only do they match Alabama’s best win (at Texas) by beating Texas on the road by six more points, but they also had other quality wins. It’s not TCU’s fault that Eric didn’t know that Kansas State and other squads in the Big 12 that usually suck were having good seasons. You learn a lot if you actually watch the sport!

I really shouldn’t waste my time but this piece is stupid and self unaware I can’t resist

I’ll do like common practice in my industry and use aliases/ project names to preserve some objektivity (see I can swap out a c for a k too Erik!)

School T: DFW metroplex Community college for kids who couldn’t get into UT-Austin (SMU also qualifies)

12 wins including wins over final cfp ranked #10 (10-3) at home and @ #20(8-4) by 7 points

Strength of record (can’t just play quality competition actually have to beat them) #3

Losses – Conf champ game to cfp #10 in OT, who they beat at home by 10 points at home in regular season

School A: Community College for kids who couldn’t get into Georgia/ live in a third world country on the gulf coast but is affiliated with a very successful triple A NFL minor league football team

    10 wins, aforementioned @ #20 by a point and #22

    Strength of record – 5

    2losses – at current #7 (10-2) by 3 and #18 (9-4)

What they did this weekend: watched tv, prayed, picked their nose

So school T has better wins, more wins, better strength of record, larger margin of victory against the one common opponent, played for their conference championship and beat the one team they lost to. Loss was in overtime vs school A who lost in regulation (at the last second pawl!!!!!) and in overtime.

So you can do to Erik’s argument what Alabama did to its own playoff chances: kill them.

Conference games rendered useless, uh what conference game did Alabama play in so it deserves a spot?

More about optics than data, geographic inclusivity rather than strength of schedule, human interest over quality: see above

Quality wins are meaningless: how would Alabama know, they didn’t have any, at least TCU did, see above

Not getting the shit kicked out of you is irrelevant, yes two close losses are definitely more impressive than one loss in overtime or if you’re talking about Ohio State, one bad loss (to a team ranked higher than any of alabamas losses btw)

Alabamas arguments for being included are basically “do you know who i am????”. Sorry your team couldn’t get it done, it’s your own damn fault. Rant over.
