Musical palate cleanser

It was Janis Joplin’s birthday last week (she would have turned 80) and I don’t think she’s ever been the subject of an MPC before, so here’s her remarkable cover of “Ball & Chain” at the Monterey Pop Festival:

Man, that voice and that delivery…

Fun fact: she was a HS classmate of Jimmy Johnson. His jock crew found her offbeat style annoying, and their nickname for her was “Beat Weeds” (that’s small town Texas for Worn Out Clothes, apparently).

I was lucky enough to see her with Johnny Winter at the “Palm Beach Pop Festival “ in November 69!

What a voice and presence on stage. You could stay on that show for an awhile with your MPC’s. Lots of coming out parties.

Loved the guy hired to close the show as the walk out act Otis Redding.
