Still crazy after all these years

At Roll Bama Roll, there’s a certain flame that will never burn out.

However when Kirby Smart made his classless exit from Tuscaloosa while photographing the recruiting board, he also stole a few Bama rising star staff members including Schumann. After a couple years as inside linebacker coach, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator along with another former Bama staffer Dan Lanning (also pilfered).  Those two built the best defenses in the nation.

Butt still hurts, does it?

(Schumann) has proven his worth. He knows the system. He can recruit. He is an Alabama man. And taking a guy back from Kirby would be so satisfying.

I’m beginning to think they want Schumann more for sticking it to Kirby than for his coaching ability.

Its amazing how fragile they are as a fan base. You’d think they’d be a bit more secure given their history but they go from entitled bloated arrogance to petty, fearful, little victims on the turn of a dime.

And none of them seem to understand that the reason things have shifted is because Kirby is eating their lunch on recruiting, developing and deploying big LOS dudes.

As long as guys like Mims are back up RTs and Bear Alexander rides the bench they in trouble. And no coordinator is fixing that for them.

      • Derek, nail -> head. Good post there. They really don’t realize that Kirby has taken their LOS dominance in recruiting away from them (at worst, he has neutralized it and is now the developer).

If Jalen Carter ends up as the #1 overall pick and Broderick Jones is a top 12 pick, the Bammers are going to lose their minds.

Plus, it’s literally the dumbest shit in the world. From nuclear science to recruiting, you can’t force knowledge out of an individual brain. I don’t know, would they be cool if Kirby wrote it down or dictated it……. these people probably burned libraries in a former life.

  2. Schumann was Kirby’s analyst at Bama. Kirby didn’t steal him from anyone. He gave Schu his first on-field coaching responsibility. He ain’t leaving for a lateral move unless Bama makes a really big money play for him. I don’t see Saban making that move on a guy who has been a co-coordinator for 1 season.

Also got to remember that Kirby gave Cochran his first on-field coaching job. Cochran was the developer within the strength and conditioning program. He’s also in Athens.
P.S. Kirby didn’t steal him. Kirby extended an opportunity that didn’t exist in gumpville.

Yeah, he was a GA for one year at Alabama and left to coach at Memphis for two years before Kirby brought him to Athens. Two years during which Nick Saban had the opportunity to offer him a paying on field gig and did not, so… I swear to God, if you so much sit through two cycles at a traffic light in Tuscaloosa, these people slap the “Built By Bama” label on you.

Classless exit….wtf douchey statement is that, as if Bama is “The Firm”?

Kirby was there 9 years longer than any on field assistant Nicky ever had, or that would have Nicky.

He remained through the CFP to coach, & help get their 4th Natty ring while he was their DC.

      Shorter RBR:

Kirby was classless for going back to his alma mater, but we should hire Schumann because he’s an Alabama grad.

Good riddance Kirby. You may have been the DC, but everyone knows it was Saban’s system. I bet Schumann is the true architect of the UGA defense.

Yeah, Kirby promoted Schumman from analyst at Alabama to on-field coach at Georgia, but he totally stole him from us.

Funny how he spends the opening segment of the article talking about how Bama has only had 5 D coordinators in 16 seasons. That does sound much better than 4 in the last 6 seasons if you don’t count the guy that pretty much built Bama’s elite D’s for 10 years prior to his “classless exit”.

Yeah, they kinda gloss over the question of just who is it that brought this 5 coordinators in 16 seasons stat to be a reality – it isn’t Nick Saban!

It’s Bama if the facts don’t fit the narrative ignore them and talk louder. Call Pawwwlll he’ll help.

Last season the roster was built for a championship season. Most of their fans know it adding to their frustration. Saban has cleaned house in his staff along with a massive player turnover. This year is the closest thing to a true rebuilding year in more than a decade.

Meanwhile their greatest ex DC now towers over all of college football using the Saban system. Kirby’s 47 and like the energizer rabbit with energy. Their hero and GOAT is 71 looking at a total rebuild of his program. Even worse getting to Atlanta is no longer a given. LSU has suddenly found a real coach and it’s working for them.

If you a Bammer at night when you’re all alone being honest with yourself. Best case maybe we can get another natty before it crashes down on us maybe.

    The end draws nigh Bammers.

Pawwwll fanned that flaming story all season. He’s like most of the media self serving. He made his name selling Bammer football he knows his audience extremely well. Made the most out of his school UT beating Saban finally. Trashed Pruitt and Mullen now he’s pushing both for coordinator at Bama. Make the phones ring is all that matters.

When it serves him he’ll dump Kirby until then Georgia is the king of CFB.

Just when you think the Gumps couldn’t be a bigger bunch of crybaby bitches, here they go taking it to yet another level.

Yeah. Kirby “stole” Schumman from Saban by giving a lowly analyst an on-field coaching position.

    How dare you, Kirby!

Of course, Schumann making a lateral move to go to Bama is totally not shame worthy for that fanbase and their St. Nick. Not at all.

You can’t spell hypocrisy without roll tide.

    • I think they laughed at Kirby for promoting Schumann and Cochran to on-field roles.

      Liked by 4 people

      • godawgs1701

It was a forced laugh, but it was indeed a laugh.

Schumann no doubt sees what it took for Cochran to get his shot as an on-field coach, too. He knows that if he hadn’t come to Athens with Kirby, he’d still be a quality control analyst on the staff because Saban never did see his talent. “But Glenn, somebody has to answer the phones – aight? If I move you out of your current role with respect to the process of answering the phones then someone isn’t going to be there with respect to the process with the phones, aight?”

    • You need to keep up with the ‘Bama paranoia, pwd. Issue wasn’t that Kirby couldn’t remember, it’s that he was showing the board to recruits who weren’t at the top so they’d see they weren’t really getting the love from Saban.

Dan Lanning went from anonymous position coach at Memphis in 2016-17 to head coach of the Oregon Ducks in 2022 thanks to his time as a co-coordinator on Kirby Smart’s staff, and he had a whole hell of a lot more fun doing it than the miserable sons of bitches toiling in the fields of Saban so explain to me again just exactly why Glenn Schumann needs to make a lateral move to achieve his career goals? Now, he did go to school there and was a student assistant there. And then he spent three long years as a GA there and then spent two more as a plater development guy… during all of these years Nick Saban had the opportunity to hire him and give him a coaching job, but he did not do so. What exactly does Schumann owe him? And if he does indeed dream of going home to Tuscaloosa one day, why wouldn’t he just wait to do it as head coach? If he keeps building doomsday defenses in Athens, he’s going to get a chance to be somebody’s head coach soon. And then he will have the chance to build the resume up to be someone who can take over for Saban.

And another thing, it’s never even been confirmed that this apocryphal tale of Kirby Smart at the picture of the recruiting board is even true, but assuming it is – the only reason it would hurt Alabama is if they were lying to recruits about where they stand with the Tide. I guess the RBR folks are actually just saying, “dammit we deserve to lie to recruits and trick them to come sit on our bench instead of playing elsewhere” or something. Real cool of them.

Also, I enjoy their description of Pete Golding’s career – “Saban basically plucked him out of obscurity and molded in him into what he thought a defensive coordinator should be.” The man was defensive coordinator for two years at UT-San Antonio which is a FBS program. He was also defensive coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana and a position coach at Southern Miss. Just because article author “CB969” didn’t know who he was doesn’t mean coaches didn’t.

Obscurity is what Kirby Smart plucked Glenn Schumann out of.

  17. The Truth

What I don’t get is how the Gumps can’t see that situation with Schumann that’s most analagous to Kirby is that Schu stays at UGA and burnishes his bonafides with the king of the mountain (like Kirby did with Saban), and waits to go home when Mama calls him to be the head man (like UGA did with Kirby), not make a move as a coordinator.

    • I doubt the Bammers allow UA to hire anyone who doesn’t have head coaching experience at the highest levels, so Schumann could get the job but would have to prove himself elsewhere first. They are still smarting from the Mike Shula experience.
