“But it’s Alabama,” they said. “You’ll be working with Saban!”

Apparently that’s not enough of a charm now.

I don’t know what’s going on in Tuscaloosa, but I’m beginning to understand why Todd Grantham is still in the picture as a coordinator hire.

Weird, some people don’t want to work with a hypocritical duck head.

This sounds a lot like Ryan Grubb wasn’t offered the job.

Except he was. He just decided to say no.

At least, according to “a source with direct knowledge of the situation.” In terms of on the record sources, I haven’t seen one. It’s no impossible that Grubb decided to turn down a chance to work at Alabama, but he interviewed for a reason. He isn’t even getting any new money out of it? We’re missing a piece of the puzzle, he would have had to know that Saban was an asshole going into the interview.

Sometimes we have a tendency to overthink things or overlay what we would do, which is always a mistake.

Job offered. He said no thanks.

Did we offer our offensive coordinator job to Eddie Gran? There were sources that told Kentucky Sports Radio that we did. Georgia media had sources that said we didn’t. All I’m saying is that I hadn’t heard of Christian Caple before and while I’m sure he’s got a source, so do all the denizens of the DawgVent.

If Ryan Grubb didn’t even get so much as a new desk chair out of Washington to stay in his job but turned down Alabama’s offer anyway, that’s remarkable and quite an anomaly in the coaching world. Not impossible, but it’s certainly an oddity.

Maybe it is this Washington is a contender for the PAC 12 championship and has a staff in place going into its second year, with a very good, very experienced quarterback returning. Grubb is earning $2 million a year at Washington. Alabama asked him to move his family 2,500 miles away to work for a 72 year old who is dissatisfied with the previous OC who produced the 4th best and 5th best scoring offense in the country while there. He may have said working at Alabama wasn’t worth moving his family to worry about pleasing a septuagenarian who is never happy with anything other than a cfb playoff championship and the $2 million per year to coach at a power 5 contender is just fine as it is.

        • Grubb just recently got bumped up about the same thing Monken is making, because A&M was coming after him. So the “no new money” thing is a tad misleading, considering he JUST got bumped up to $2 million per year. And I doubt Bama was willing to pay him much more. Like, they may have been willing to go to $2.1 or something just so he could say he got a raise, but we’re not talking substantial numbers. So it wouldn’t appear to me that money played much of a part at all. The only lure would have been to be able to coach Bama’s players instead of Washington’s, and apparently that wasn’t enough, for whatever reasons.

Saban an asshole? Surely you jest.
I met the man once and concur with your conclusion. He was at LSU when I met him; I recall him being aloof and arrogant .

This is the way it always happens. The end of a dynasty starts slowly, and then comes all at once.

  4. Over at RBR they’ve been reduced to conceding “Georgia ain’t going anywhere, and neither is Alabama. Those two will be contending for the foreseeable future.” The fact they’re placing the Dawgs on equal footing with the Tide seems to indicate something very strange has gotten into the water in Tuscaloosa.

Wow. Though, if they were truly honest themselves, it would be something more like, “Georgia ain’t going anywhere, and as long as Saban is here, Bama ain’t either. However, when Nick leaves… OMIGOD THE WORLD WILL END!!!”

Sure, a 72 year old’s drive, determination, stamina, mental acuity and physical health over the next 10 years will match a 47 year old’s overvthe next 10 years, Eric with a k.

Grubb asked Saban if the new DC can assure enough stops in order to get the ball back so he score 40+ pts per game. Saban said I’ll let you know.

    Grubb said pound sand.

I’ve got that coaching staff inked in for ten wins this fall and I’m excited to see what happens in the toss-ups with LSU and A&M.

It’s at A&M and they’ve got a ton of talented players and they’re going to be scoring a lot of points. Alabama will beat probably beat them, but for my money I have that and LSU as the biggest question marks on their schedule. They’ll beat Texas in Tuscaloosa and let’s just say I’m sure Tennessee in Tuscaloosa has been circled on Nick’s calendar for quite some time. Even if it’s Joe Cox and Todd Grantham, I don’t see them slipping below 1o wins this fall.

Completely uneducated, wild ass guess here: people are beginning to believe that Saban is going to hang it up fairly soon. Even if it’s not true, that perception could be a factor, and will be very hard for him to overcome.

The only person more appropriate than Grantham would be to hire Willie Martinez so that we could recreate the 2008 game, but in our favor.
