Honestly, I’m about to reach the point where I start referring to this ($$) as a Georgia tradition.
The Georgia football team’s issues with reckless driving go on: Receiver Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint became the latest player arrested on the charge.
According to online records, Rosemy-Jacksaint was charged with reckless driving and speeding-maximum limits. Both are misdemeanors. He was arrested by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and booked at 4:33 p.m. on Tuesday. Rosemy-Jacksaint was released less than an hour later after posting bond.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department released this statement about the arrest: “On May 23, 2023, at approximately 3:18PM, an officer was conducting speed detection in the 2600 block of Atlanta Highway when the officer noticed a black Dodge Charger traveling eastbound on Atlanta Highway at a high rate of speed. The officer estimated the vehicle to be going 90 miles per hour and confirmed such with a speed detection lidar. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, was arrested for speeding and reckless driving.”
The only pleasure, such as it is, that I can take from this news is that I have to figure Jimmy Williamson wakes up every morning regretting his decision to retire. Sheesh.
I’m sure the 4 letter is working this into a special report to blame Carter.

This is just dumbfounding to me. I love this kid; he has done everything right and in my opinion, ready to jump to a different level this year. He had some ‘big’ clutch catches. He’s a big kid with big hands and strong. I mean seriously… What are you thinking?

He’s a 21 (or 22) year old male driving a 2020 Dodge Charger. Of course he’s going to speed. I’m not sure exactly what the trim of the Charger MR-JS was driving but those have at least 300 hp and up to 700+ hp. There are very few red blooded American men at that age who wouldn’t drive like an idiot every now and then when there in a muscle car like that.
That being said, driving 90 mph in a 45 mph zone is incredibly stupid. And there’s no excuse for his actions. My initial comment wasn’t trying to explain away what MR-JS was doing. It was to state that we really shouldn’t be surprised when the next kid gets caught driving like an idiot.

I saw a friend of mine flip his car multiple times. He was racing me at the time btw. Thank God he walked away. I continued to drive my bitchin’ camaro like a complete asshole. I also had an uncle die in a car accident when he was about Rosemy’s age while attending UGA.
Nothing slowed me down. Not tickets. Not warning signs. Nothing.
I was fucking invincible. Then I grew up and now I drive my old p/u truck like an old man.
There is a reason they draft 18 year olds.

When I handed over a bunch of my high school graduation cash gifts to pay for a speeding ticket as a senior, that pretty much broke me of going more 10 or so over the limit. I’m just glad my father didn’t take my car away for the last month of high school and make me ride the cheese dog or deal with the embarrassment of my mother dropping me off and picking me up at school.

My 22 year old son got a speeding and reckless driving ticket last year for doing an absurdly high rate of speed on GA400. He was stupid, and I told him so. He is still paying us back for the $1,200 ticket and the attorney fees for helping him keep it off his record through community service and safe driving classes. It’s all stupid behavior, and the thousands of dollars has hopefully cured him of it. But what I don’t understand in Athens is the need to actually arrest the offender. Is it the officer’s discretion whether to issue the citation only or place the person under arrest for these charges?

I have no idea. I’m not an attorney. I think it is at the officer’s discretion on reckless driving charges, but I’m guessing local law enforcement has their individual standards/expectations. If it was a Georgia State Patrol officer who cited your son, I’m guessing he had more important things to do than take him to the Fulton County or Forsyth County sheriff’s office for booking.

It was an Alpharetta officer, and I was surprised he only got the ticket. All that being said, while I told my son how stupid he was for driving that fast, I also know that I was guilty of just as bad, if not far worse things at his age. To your and other commenters’ point, most of us think we are invincible at that age, and are lucky we made it out relatively unscathed.

Maybe the Alpharetta police gives the ticket and if the person is cooperative, pulls over immediately, etc. doesn’t take the person in for booking for a reckless driving charge. I’m also assuming his license was taken in lieu of bail.
Who knows in this case what the circumstances were? The officer could have been a jerk or having a bad day and MRJ got the worst of it. If so, I imagine his attorney will get to the bottom of it. Marcus may not have been cooperative or pulled over immediately. The officer decided to bring him in. Maybe the ACCPD has a standard that if you’re adding RD to a moving violation, the accused has to be brought in.
I only hope for MRJ’s sake that justice is served and that he wasn’t brought in for his race or for his status as a football player.

I know there’ll be some clutching their pearls over this, but as far as we know, it doesn’t appear that he was street racing. Heck, if he was in Atlanta, he would likely have gotten the middle finger salute for going too slow at 90 IMO.

Doing 90 on the Atlanta Highway in the middle of the afternoon is a little different from doing 90 on I-85 in non-rush hour. I’m only glad this didn’t have a racing or DUI component to it.
I imagine he’s going to be learning a lesson when he (or his parents) see his next insurance bill and after a week or 2 of time with Scott Sinclair.

Cops sit at that credit union all the time. The speed limit is 40 going down the hill, and doesn’t get to 45 until the bridge.
Someone who has been here as long as MRJ has should know that. Jalen Carter was pulled over in that exact spot. To be going 90 there is just dumbassery of the highest order, and he rightfully should go to jail. I have no sympathy for that level of stupidity.

Sounds like he was going the other way, from the loop/mall area back into Athens. So he was coming from a higher limit into a lower one, which is a textbook speed trap. 90 is still way too fast, but I’m guessing all of us have sped through that merge and realized that the speed limit drops as you approach the old Kroger.

You’re right. Eastbound is the other way, but honestly that’s worse in my opinion. That is far more dangerous.

Either way is dangerous because you’ve got a blind approach (at that speed) over a big hill with a traffic light after/during the downslope.

Hard to believe he could get up to 90 on any stretch of Atlanta Highway in the middle of the afternoon for at least some sustained (albeit brief) period of time – you have to have a lot of clean track to accelerate up there, sustain it for a few seconds, and then decelerate without hitting something in front of you….
LikeLike
Eh, if you’ve got the horsepower you’re coming downhill on a divided highway past Target. If you hit that light (or especially if you’re accelerating through it to make the light), you can carry a lot of momentum uphill and then you’re on a big downhill through where the cop was set up followed by a steep uphill climb after you cross the river to slow the car down until you get to a more congested area. UGA is out, so traffic is a LOT lighter, especially until Maymester is over.
Point being, it’s not that difficult to get that speed, but you definitely have to be making a conscious effort to drive well over the speed limit. The big danger there is if you come over the hill and need to stop at the light in front of the RaceTrac, it’s gonna be hard to get slowed down when you’re doing 90. Unless maybe you’re driving one of those 1.1 million dollar Ferraris I was looking at at Road Atlanta last weekend. I bet you could get one of those slowed down in time. I really want one of those.

Is there anywhere else in the US where people are actually arrested for speeding? If he was driving without a license or had drugs in the car or something else I could see him being arrested. Being stopped for speeding generally results in being given a ticket and sent on your way.
That said, can you imagine the bandwidth that would be required if the Atlanta fish wrapper reported every speeding ticket college students got?

I think in most denser, urban areas, doing 90 in a 40/45 in the middle of the afternoon is going to at least get you a ride in the back of the cop car…. If it’s the middle of the night with no traffic and you’re sober, or you’re on the interstate, its probably a ticket only….

It’s super-speeding which is considered reckless driving. Reckless driving is not just a “here’s your ticket, give me your license” type of police interaction. About the only traffic citations that are worse are DUI and racing. 90 in a 40/45 would definitely qualify.

Just about everywhere in the US you can be arrested for reckless driving. If you are driving far in excess of the posted speed limit to the point that it is deemed reckless given the circumstances, you can absolutely get arrested for speeding if it rises to the level of reckless driving. As a misdemeanor it carries up to a $1,000 fine and/or up to 12 months in jail plus any other conditions a judge deems appropriate (defensive driving class, community service, etc.).

Reckless driving is a judgment call by the cop. He was a super-speeder. Doesn’t call for an arrest, per se.
In Athens they arrest for a lot of misdemeanors that are tickets elsewhere because of the bail money. This dick cop likely added the reckless driving so they could impound the car. That’s even more money in the city and county coffers.

That may be true. I tend to think going 45-50 miles over the speed limit should be defined as reckless driving. I have no problem with the officer’s discretion on this one. YMMV.
I wasn’t there, so I don’t know whether the officer was a jerk. Therefore, I’m not going to judge the officer. I’m sure that officer has seen the aftermath of a lot more accidents caused by excessive speed than I have.

When I worked in a solicitor’s office for a municipal court I can’t remember any situation where someone charged with reckless driving wasn’t arrested. 90 in a 45/40 should not only be arrested, but the judge should impose jail time suspended with probation so that if you are caught again speeding probation gets revoked and you actually do spend some time in jail up to the 12 months allowed for reckless driving.

There’s an easy solution to this problem. Any vehicle with more than 55hp is off limits as long as someone is in the program. It’s going to be very difficult for players to break the speed limit if they’re all driving 1981 Chevette diesels. Better yet, the anger and frustration they feel being stuck driving a Chevette diesel will give them an extra edge on game day. And keep their insurance premiums low. It’s a win-win-win!

Going twice the speed limit? 80 (or 90) on an expressway is a very different thing than driving 90 on a city road that isn’t limited access.
We shouldn’t be brushing this aside. It’s dangerous for him and it’s dangerous for the people around him.
I’m not saying he should be kicked off the team or anything like that. I also don’t think it’s nothing to see here especially in the context of the other stuff that has happened in the off-season.

As someone who drives this road everyday, I can see getting ticketed for 60 or 65. 90 is an entirely different animal on that stretch. I’m not saying it’s the end of the world, but it is the very definition of reckless and he deserves whatever punishment comes his way.

If this car is what I think it is….45 to 90 MPH takes about 2.5 seconds with the peddle to the medal. These 392 hemis are listed at 385 horse but that is BS…they are really fast. In most cars I’ve owed, but not all, 2-3 seconds on the firewall would get me from 40 to 65 but in these beasts you’re at 90 in 2-3 seconds. I assure you at 21YOA my attitude was why have a fast car if you don’t drive fast….occasionally. NIL money, invincibility and testosterone , I would have done/did this …..and yet I’m still here. The Sigma Nu’s had time trials( who made the trip the fastest) from I-285 and Hwy 78 to the River Road House and my 63 Riviera held the record until dethroned by a 2 liter 914 Porsche.
The Hartman fund needs to buy the team some track time at Road Atlanta…just an idea.
