Today, in when smart coaches do dumb things

Larry Fedora’s got a big game coming up on national TV against an SEC opponent, but I guess he’s got enough spare time on his hands to deal with the inevitable backlash from hiring Tim Beckman, who, when we last checked in on him, was getting bounced from Illinois for mistreating some of his players.

At least that’s what everyone else says.  Fedora’s got the real poop.

“I don’t believe everything I read, all right,” Fedora said, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I know Tim. I know his side of the story, also. So I was comfortable with it. If I wouldn’t have been, obviously I wouldn’t have brought him. I wouldn’t have allowed him to be in our program.”

He continued: “I know (criticism is) going to happen, and then a couple of days from now it won’t be news. I mean, I promise you, I didn’t see anywhere where the NCAA said that he should be banished from the game of football. You know?

“I mean, the guy didn’t win enough games. That’s all it was.”

You gotta love it — “I hired him, so that’s proof in and of itself he didn’t do anything bad.”

How many of Kirby Smart’s opposing coaches already have non-game distractions to deal with this season?

Sir, please justify your premise that Larry Fedora is a smart coach.

I’ve read another commenter state “as long as Larry refuses to wear a fedora on the sidelines, he’s not the coach he could be”.

      I agree, what a waste.

“I mean, the guy didn’t win enough games. That’s all it was.”
Art Briles would be glad to challenge that argument.

Q: ‘How many of Kirby Smart’s opposing coaches already have non-game distractions to deal with this season?’
A: Boom…distraction? the man in the mirror
A:Gus….distraction? noise of the fanbase of harelips drinking milkshakes through two plastic straws, insane expectations, two Bobbies (Petrino and Lowder) and a jet.
A: Butch….distraction? DOJ fly swatters, NCAA pencil-necks, women’s rights, running out of Brasso metal polish and large animal cages for the UT players.
    A: Hugh….distraction? the plastic hammer of ‘Whack-A-Mole’
A: Paul….distraction? His earth-to-alien-planet communication line is suddenly and unexpectedly disconnected and he forgets he is supposed to belong to the 3rd planet from the sun.
Honorable mention: Big Jim…..distraction? The chance that Huntley Johnson retires from his law practice before the next Gator cornerback forgets about the unregistered nine under the seat when stopped at 0356….the ‘not mine’ defense just doesn’t have the same force if not entered by HJ.

When I saw yesterday that Tim Beckman was added to UNC’s staff, my only thought was, “why?” What the heck does Tim Beckman bring to the table that makes him so valuable as to justify the bad press and distraction? Larry Fedora’s the guy’s buddy and so he’s helping him with his career rehab. That’s great and all, but if I was Fedora’s boss I’d need a much better reason than that. Carolina’s athletic department has had enough bad press over the past few years. Let Beckman go coach some juco or D-3 school for a few years if he wants to rehab his image.

    • I say let them have all the bad press they can get and distractions before 09/03. His remark about “bringing a punter to Atlanta but I don’t think we’ll need him”, would be posted throughout the locker rooms and the gym if I was the coach. Don’t forget this team lost their first game last year to a bad Shamecock squad. Don’t get cocky, Fedora!
