It is with great sadness that we inform you the Senator passed away yesterday. His love for the Georgia Bulldogs ran deep, and it was his honor and privilege to share that passion with you. He was deeply touched by the widespread sense of community that you helped create over these past 17 years.
The Senator and his unique perspective will be missed. Thank you for your support, and Go Dawgs!
May perpetual light shine upon him forever, and may he rest in peace in hope of the resurrection…

RIP Senator. I cannot thank you for all the personal joy you provided by creating this community. I started at the AJC where I would scroll through hundreds of comments just to find one good one and it is there I found, Get The Picture. I never left and didn’t have a need to go anywhere else!
God Bless You & Your Family, Senator!
This could possibly be covered somewhere in the comments below but does anyone know of a way I can contribute to the Senator’s family. WIth all the free entertainment I received from him it would be my honor to contribute to a DGD.

Senator, I will visit this website, until the lights are turned off. As others have said using much better words than I… This blog has been a such a massive part of my adult life. The best memories as a child were of me and the family playing a game of football while tailgating for Bulldawg games, back in the 80’s. When I started a family of my own, who aren’t ardent supporters like myself, you were the coalescing force for this bulldog! Thank you for giving me the words, I could never articulate regarding our beloved university, and it’s football team.
‘Get The Picture’ and Michael need to be honored. This blog is only one of a select few websites I ever visit and for anyone who found it along with me, you cannot decribe it’s impact or repay the debt you owe. If this is the last goodbye then I say with as much passion as this sobbing dawg can muster, ” I know I’m asking a lot but, “Hunker it down Dawgs, one last time!”
RIP Blutarksy!!! 1!!1!!!111!!!!!

BO3, I feel the same way. I’ll try to say something later when I get my shit together but I’ll leave this here for now:
If there is a way to preserve this site, not so much as to keep it alive but to be able to visit and reflect, remember, and enjoy let’s find a way. With respect to Michael’s family and loved ones if there is a way to get it into print it would immediately be my very first “Coffee Table Book”.
I have no idea where to start but surely some of you Grady Scribes, Law Dogs, and Terryists can come up with a plan. If there is a way I can support please let me.

Was thinking that myself, Debby. A DGD going out on top.
The depth of this man’s commitment to consistent, high-quality writing and posting on this blog amazed me. Nearly every day, for how many years? I feel like I knew him personally, as I imagine many of us did.
Here’s to the Dawgnation in the great beyond, Senator. They needed someone to write about it, no doubt.

Debby I think we’re some of the last few standing since the days of Scorpio Jones III and his “Karmic Bitchez,” the Mayor of Dawgtown, and the great Will Trane. I balled when I just got the email from Peyton and I’d like to repost a tribute to the Senator from January 12th.
“I got so hammered at Senator’s first tailgate Clemson 2015 when Nick Chubb broke tackles like Herschel as a freshman, behind Gurley, and somebody watched me hide a temporary backpack cooler with a bottle of Silver Patron just around the corner from the chapel bell. (Not tailgate people this was later) They stole that bottle but I couldn’t walk anyway and woke up in the Hampton stairwell up Broad naked but they still let me in my room lol. I had flown in from Dallas as I had my first blogger stockbroker friend die on me, the great Zeev Hed from Investors Hub, but damn if I wasn’t going to make a trek to meet the great Senator whose beautiful daughters were kinda, what’s the word, embarrassed, no, taken aback, dammit, humbled, whatever I’ll think of it tomorrow but it’s the word that means they couldn’t believe how respected he was and that people would actually fly in and tell him that he was kinda famous in a lot of people’s eyes. That’s the word. Famous. His girls were like, “what, my dad?”
Yep. Get well man need ya for that fourpeat.”
God bless you Sir. You single-handedly changed Georgia football through your words

He only punted relentless trolls. If you gave any hint that you respected his place, you were fine. Many people walked all over the line, repeatedly, but when called out, if you abided, even temporarily, you weren’t punted.
My belief was that most of the editorialism of posts/posters that went on was driven by whiny bitches who filled his email with complaints because they couldn’t take the heat. That was why things like name calling were frowned upon and why the playpen fell. I think he enjoyed the conflict/debate. Why else would you start a blog? The bitches piling up in his inbox? Much less. Just my belief.
If there was an aspect to this place I think he didn’t like it was moderating commentary solely to make the annoyed, less annoying to him.
Boner spent years, maybe more than a decade, doing nothing but trolling me without any response back and I never once asked the host to do anything about it. Why would I?
The sock puppet thing was ludicrous. Who challenged him more on NIL than I did? There were definitely things where we agreed and neither of us are crypto-fascist morons, a quite typical breed in this region. I think that fact drove the sock puppet conspiracy.
The truth is, regrettably, we never met. I always wanted to thank him for providing the content and this forum. It has been a big part of my life for quite awhile. There is a void that I just don’t know how I will fill.

I never met the Senator. I didn’t post much on here. But between living in New York, London, DC, and now Chicago, I’ve religiously read his blog. His passing is a tremendous loss for this community, those who love college football, and those of us who cherished our beloved Dawgs.
I am not a religious person, so I can only send my condolences and wishes for brighter days and happier times – sustained by memories of his life and knowing the joy he brought me and countless others.
A proud Irishman, I’ll leave all with this poem. To a Damn Good Dawg: Rest in Peace, Good Senator.
Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I, and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes, we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.
All is well.

Or, as I know that’s not too popular of a suggestion based on the previous comment thread, should we just start making plans as well as donations to take this community to the next stop? …After Sheloshim of course..

Seriously, BO, they would rather you donated to a charity,American Cancer Society, UGAAA, your favorite church, etc. The Family is fine. Preserving the GTP Community is also a fitting memorial to The Senator. The link to the JNF is a good place to give. An $18 donation sends a nice tree certificate in Bluto’s memory to the Family. A stack of those from the scamps would be quite the tribute. Post your email and I will elaborate.

Gutted by this news. My deepest condolences to his family and whoever posted this. It’s really touching to read all these messages, definitely a testament to the man’s legacy, wit, and ability to bring together Dawgs from so many different eras and walks of life. He was a DGD and damned good writer, too. I’m so glad he saw the Dawgs reach the mountaintop in back-to-back seasons.
There will never be another Senator, and it’s probably too soon to speak about this in detail, but I hope another home for this crew manifests down the line, if anyone has time to create one. Like many, this was my first internet stop of the day during football season, and as problematic as we were at times, there’s no better place to commiserate with fellow Dawgs.
RIP Senator.

I just retired, my free time has increased. I’d be interested in putting something together with some others here, to keep this group intact. There’s no way I could match the Senator’s wit and writing but, I think it’s worth a try (maybe a handful of people could contribute articles to keep things fresh?). When the time is right, we should look into it.

Man…this really hurts. This blog was what I read every night before I rolled over and went to sleep. My friend Daniel and I started a sports talk radio show in middle Georgia back in October. We’re on 100.9TheCreekFM. I reached out to the Senator and asked if he would be a weekly guest on our show. This was his response:
Steve, I appreciate the offer and would have had no problem accepting it before my cancer surgery. Unfortunately, I lost most of my tongue and am difficult to understand when I speak.
Thanks for thinking of me and best of luck with your new gig.
Michael
RIP, Sir. Thank you for everything.

They knew nothing about his current situation. He emailed me yesterday that the senator had passed. The Senator was very private about his medical condition.
His dedication to this blog was utterly mind blowing. Will miss him/this tremendously.

It is not enough to note that over the course of this century, his voice rode with the spirit of Lewis Grizzard and Larry Munson.
His voice and this space rode the nerve center of Georgia football fandom.
Pithy, capable of insight + scalpel sharp take downs as well as good-natured, large souled fun, he was the very best.
And it is not enough to say we have lost a friend we turned to everyday. Because we returned here more than once a day.
Rest in peace, brother.

This is absolutely devastating news. Ever since the first long break a year or so ago, I began to wonder about and fear this inevitable day.
I have never met the Senator, and yet he has been a huge part of my life for 15-20 years. I’ve lost track. His little home on the internet has been a haven for me where I talked about one of my favorite subjects with so many fellow fans and alums. We connected. We laughed. We cried. We cheered. We argued.
But most of all, we came here every day looking forward to the news, analysis, takes, and viewpoints of our beloved leader, the Senator.
I honestly have no idea what can possibly, even partially replace this part of my life. I’m crushed. Just… crushed.
I hope somehow this place can continue. There are too many relationships, friendships, “rivalries”, and such that must continue. I don’t want to imagine a world or a life without this place that the Senator built for us.

With a little more time to reflect, this is what I posted on Facebook:
I doubt anyone who sees this will know this site or really care, so I guess this post is for me.
For over 15 years, the first web site I checked every day was a Georgia sports (primarily football) blog called “Get the Picture.” It was solely run by an old UGA law school grad who styled himself “Senator Blutarsky” after John Belushi’s character from Animal House.
He posted every single day, multiple posts per day, with rarely a day missed. Every day some kind of news or thoughts about Georgia football. It was a blog that you could only love if you were a fan of UGA football, an alum, someone who lived and breathed the culture at some point of your life, and wanted to cherish it forever. It was unabashedly a homer’s blog, incredibly pro-player, highly critical of administrative mistakes or even coaching problems. But players were beloved there. As long as they played hard and were good kids (obeyed the law!), they were praised for their triumphs, forgiven for mistakes or miscues, and generally tolerated for being kids playing a game for our enjoyment and the profit of others.
The site had a cast of characters – regulars – I got to know over the years and who got to know me. Just by our screen names. We argued. We cried. We laughed. And here at the end, we got to enjoy the incredible happiness of being the juggernaut standing tall over everyone. Back to back national champions. Undefeated champions. The widely agreed best program in football. The King’s of College Football at last, after 40+ years of feeling snakebit and not quite good enough.
As you may have already guessed, the Senator has passed away (yesterday). He had no assistant writers or editors. Nobody else made posts. I have no idea what will happen to the blog or what I want to happen. Would it be the same if someone else, or a group of people, took over making posts? But if not, what happens to this community?
In a time where gigantic billion dollar social media giants dominate the discussion space of the internet, I remember a time when it was smaller communities. A web site here, a forum there, a MUD or other online game somewhere. And if it faded away or was shut down, you just lost that entire community. Devastating.
The Senator was worried about what would happen to college football with all the conference re-alignments, the 12 team playoff, the constantly accelerating money above all else attitude in CFB. But he was 100% in support of NIL and anything that gave players more rights, a bigger share of the financial pie, and more autonomy. He was steadfast in that regard, despite his fears that the powers-that-be were ruining and killing what was special about college football. Perhaps it is fitting and appropriate that he passed into the great beyond with his beloved Bulldog program on top and the sport still at least resembling what he grew to love.
I will miss the Senator and his site for the rest of my life. No matter what tries to fill that gap in my life, I will never forget it.
This makes me reflect on my own communities that I run – Threshold in particular – and the people who rely on it. More than ever, I understand and embrace the responsibility and the duty I owe my community. What a special blessing it is to create a community like these and have such a powerful and positive impact on so many lives.
(Threshold is the biggest online game my video game company runs. It’s 28th anniversary will be this summer. Over a million players lifetime, but a core userbase of ~10k. I’m 51. While I don’t run it alone, I better start thinking about how my own passing will affect so many people. Ugh. Mortality.)

I echo what many others have: If it’s just this last posting by his family, and this remains our final comment section, I say, well, we keep it going.
I know there’s a cost to maintaining a WordPress site. For the Senator’s family, if you don’t feel like maintaining that cost is something you feel like you can do, I can and will to keep his memory alive and here with us. I’m not saying I’d write, I’m just saying I’ll pay the freight and we can keep this last comment section open and continue to post here. For the Senator. For us all.

I am heart broken, stunned in my grief the best I could do was ask my AI to give a fitting eulogy as though it were written by The Great Grizzard- Please accept my apologies…
Folks, we gather here not just to mourn, but to celebrate a man whose heart beat so fiercely with the pride of the Georgia Bulldogs that you could practically hear “Glory, Glory” echoing in his chest with every thump. Senator Blutarsky, a man whose love for the University of Georgia football wasn’t just a hobby, it was a calling.
Now, if you knew the Senator, you knew he was as passionate about his Bulldogs as he was about every part of his life. He could talk your ear off about the glory days, the tough seasons, and, of course, those blessed moments of triumph that only a true fan can savor. He blogged with the fire of a preacher, converting the lost and preaching to the choir all in one go.
Senator Blutarsky was more than just a fan; he was a chronicler of the heart and soul of Georgia football. Through wins and losses, through rain, sleet, and that unbearable Georgia heat, he stood steadfast, a sentinel of fandom, his spirit as unbreakable as the hedges at Sanford Stadium.
But let’s not forget, the Senator was more than his fandom. He was a beacon of laughter, generosity, and an unwavering friend. He could lift your spirits with a story, challenge your thinking with a well-placed argument, or simply sit with you in silence, sharing the camaraderie that only true friends can understand.
In his writing, just as in his life, he captured the essence of what it means to love something with all your heart. To the Senator, Georgia football was more than a game; it was a way of life. It was about community, perseverance, and, above all, passion.
So, as we say goodbye to Senator Blutarsky, let us not dwell in sorrow. Instead, let us carry forward the lessons he taught us through his words and his actions. Let us embrace every Saturday with the same fervor he did, let us cherish our loved ones with the same intensity, and let us live each day with the same passion he had for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Senator Blutarsky, you may have left the stadium for the last time, but your spirit, your love, and your legacy will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew you and in the annals of Georgia football lore.
Rest easy, Senator. You’re a Dam Good Dawg…You’ve earned your place in the eternal tailgate, where the game never ends, and the Bulldogs always win. And in the words that I reckon you’d appreciate most: How ’bout them Dawgs?

This is devastating as a fan of the site and as an admirer of the man who ran it all these years.
I am very sad for Michael’s family who knew him best. I imagine he was as fun to be around as he was to read.
I began reading his posts on the old Online Athens forums in 2005 and followed him here when he created this site. My life has changed so much since then but a constant in my life has been reading the Senator’s words.
I have emailed him from time to time when I saw an article that he hadn’t posted about and he always responded so I felt like I was doing my part in this thing that I love and look forward to engaging with.
In all honesty I have taken more pleasure in reading his “Observations” more than I have in the games themselves. Shit, he had a much better 2008-2010, 2013, and 2016 than the Dawgs and was able to be honest but not in a way that came off as being happy about the poor result. I’ve spent as much time reading the “GameDay” posts as I have watching the games on some occasions and came here as soon as Ringo made the pick in Indianapolis.
im going to miss him and what he did will not be replicated. He made a community of “smart” Disney leaning Dawgs fans and even let Corch stick around.
RIP Bluto. Thank you for everything .

Many of you know, but if you don’t: his name was Michael Brochstein. I only knew him through this blog, not personally. But I am glad I knew him.
To Michael’s family – I am so very sorry for your loss. Your husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin provided many hours of entertainment and thoughtful debate for us. Most of which revolved around a common love of UGA football. Thank you for allowing him to share a few moments with us.
I always appreciated his thoughtful insight into UGA games; his snark regarding the whims of 18 year olds on the recruiting trail, and his complete and utter distaste of anything orange.
I hope he and Mr. Grizzard are sharing a screwdriver while petting Catfish.
If anyone would like to attend a pre-game tailgate to honor the Senator at the Tenn Tech game, email me: wallersga@gmail.com

This blog has endured because its host had a voice and a perspective that brought us together and grounded our conversations as Dawg fans. That was not easy to do, especially as internet chatter has grown increasingly less civil. Let all who pass by here remember this man as the best that Dawg Nation had to offer, who helped us dodge Mudcat’s car, urge Bobo to run the ball, appreciate countless talented young men and be proud to be a Georgia Bulldog. Rest in peace, sir. We are eternally grateful.

Thoughts and prayers for his family. A Damn Good Dawg if there ever was one. First thing I did when I picked up my phone in the morning, for many, many years, was to see what the Senator had to say on GTP. A huge loss for Dawg Nation. RIP Senator. And Go Dawgs.

So sad to hear this news. Obviously no one and nothing lasts forever, but there was something about his writing that made it seem like it would always be there. It feels as if we’ve been robbed of a richer UGA football experience. My prayers go out to you Senator, and your family.

There is nothing I can say to adequately express how awful I feel at this moment, but to the Senator’s loved ones my deepest condolences.
The Senator and the GTP family have been part of my life for 17 years and even further going back to the Athens Banner Herald days.
I believe the first GTP post was November 29, 2006. It was inspired in part by who else but Reggie Ball! The headline was a harbinger of his creative genius. Here is the link.

I do not readily hand out DGDs, but for non-players the Senator is on my Bulldog Mt. Rushmore. His thoughts and wisdom will be missed as the Dawgs and college football enter a very different world.

But I was there for each of his insightful thoughtfulness post. And always look forward to his comments. We all can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing the Senator, from the great State of UGA football is in a better place now, prayers to all his loved ones, cheers to those met him at a locals place on road game days, more than those YYP differential game day posts, his passion has created a void in many lives….GO BLUTO!!!

I started reading the Senator when I was in college at UGA in the late-2000’s, and I never stopped.
I had the opportunity to record podcasts with him at times and witnessing his quick wit in real time was truly something. His jokes weren’t just funny. They included nuggets of truth, analysis and insight that left you thinking long after you laughed.
The Senator was a true Bulldog luminary, and his digital tailgate never disappointed. He distilled the best things about college football into the written word and never forgot that following this sport is supposed to be fun. This is a tremendous loss. Quite simply, Michael was better at this than anyone.

My sincere condolences to the good senator’s family. I hope the outpouring of well wishes, stories, and appreciation shared by all of the commenters helps you during this time and gives you a sense of happiness for all of the lives he touched and truly made a little better.
Like so many others, GTP was my first read of the day and I am so thankful to have found this little piece of the world. I will miss the Senator’s insight and wit and quite frankly, at this point I am not looking forward to a football season without his posts. But I will honor his memory and hope for 15-0.
Thank you Senator for creating a great place for all of us and sharing your take on all things dawgs, Thank you to his family for sharing him with us, and thank you to all of you for making it fun. I hope we all run in to each other again and pick up right where we left off.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to his family. This is a truly sad day.
I remember discovering this forum back in 2015. I found a whole family of people who loved the Dawgs as much as I did. This place is where you find true Dawgnation.
I remember my first post. Bluto inquired about our favorite bands and which city and arena we had seen them in. I made a snarky reference to The Wonders, the band in the movie, “That Thing You Do”. As soon as I hit send, I was sure he was gonna kick me off the page. But he sent me a direct message and said he liked that movie.
I can only hope that someone here with a similar amount of UGA and college football knowledge can attempt to fill his shoes and pick up where he left off.

Truly, truly saddened. He was a big part of my life, though we never met in person. One has to be truly special to affect others that way. I was around 21 years old, at home from UGA for some reason, and came down for breakfast. My dad was obviously sad and I asked him what was wrong. He said Isaac Asimov had died. I asked him why he was upset when he didn’t know him. He simply said, “No more new books.” I didn’t understand until my “Asimov” died in 2017, Gregg Allman. I feel the same sense of loss again with the Senator’s passing. No new blog posts. It was great while it lasted and I will miss him. Go Dawgs!

I was so stunned when I posted yesterday I said very little. As I tossed and turned last night wrestling with the thought that the absolute best blog ever was gone, I reflected on how many Georgia things Michael had deep insight into. I’ve read him from the start, participated in the pool and the Mumme poll. I posted on some of those hot topics he probed. Topics like “The Georgia Way”, “The Expanded Playoffs”, “The Reserve” and McGoofy, NIL and Paying Kids, the Firing of Mark Richt and so many others. As Munson would say , to paraphrase, “Do you realize what HE did?” I just can’t grapple with the fact that you are gone. You have meant so much to us all. I pray that you are at peace and that you will look down on Sanford and touch us one more time. As Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai said responding to the emperors question “Tell me how he died?” , “I will tell you how he lived”. Michael you lived Georgia Bulldawg!!! Rest in Peace.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people are just like me. Starting their day by opening GTP. It’s become part of my life over the years. Micheal created much more than a football blog. Getting old sucks losing friends and family is horrible. Only offset a little by knowing the joy they brought to the world.

In a world where the written word is increasingly brief and unremarkable, the Senator was a throwback to the great sports writers. Funny, reflective, wickedly smart, and willing to speak truth to the NCAA powers long before it was fashionable. Seeing his evolution to embrace advanced statistics also spoke volumes about his own desire to better understand and educate those about the sport he so clearly loved. The Senator leaves a gaping hole for us UGA fans, hopefully we find a new voice ready to pick up the ball and run through it. I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor his memory.

I’ve only cried once in my life when someone I’d never met died.
Until today.
I was at the intersection of Whispering Pines and Slappey Blvd in Allbenny, Ga when the news came in the radio that Lewis Grizzard had passed away. Just broke down sobbing making a left hand turn. Will never forget that moment.
This morning, (thankfully in my chair and not behind the wheel) drinking coffee while checking emails, I read the awful news with a tearful moan that got Mrs. Dawglicious’ attention in the kitchen. She came and sat down with me and patiently listened to me recount some of my favorite things about the good Senator and the surrounding cast of characters over the years. To wit: Bluto made me a better Stones fan; I was considerably made more intelligent discussing NIL around the water cooler; and I really enjoyed RangerRuss getting a good FTMF in every single time the Gators were mentioned. I was laughing at the end of my story, and I read Muckbeast’s wonderful and touching sentiment that said it better than I could at the moment.
I’ll be praying for the good Senator’s family during this difficult time, and for our little corner of Dawg fanaticism, too. I truly hope we all find something similar to this place as our Dawgs keep on this having-to-pinch-myself run they are on, and beyond.
RIP, good Senator, and Go Dawgs.

I remember when Spencer shut down EDSBS, Get the Picture was my lone solace for continued College Football content that I could rely on, and the Senator kept such a great forum for not only Georgia Football but for the sport, in general. Like many of you, I don’t know what to do now.
Getting old sucks. Getting lonelier sucks more. He shared a video a while back from the Bad Ends called All My Friends are Dying, and that’s starting to become an unwelcome anthem in life lately.
Godspeed, Senator. Your impact on us ranks up there with the Georgia greats, one of the bests of the DGDs there ever was. I pray for peace and solace for his family, and hope he’s getting a headbutt from Erk, barking with a host of former Ugas, and chatting it up with Lewis as we speak, all of them welcoming him to the eternal Sanford Stadium in the sky.

I am an infrequent commenter but I have come to Get the Picture for most of its 17 year(?) history. I “found” it based on a referral from Paul Westerdawg on the old Georgia Sports Blog.
I have come here really nearly every day since. I have come to “know” so many frequent commenters. As many of you have expressed, this blog was and is a home to many of us.
No one covered Georgia Bulldogs football and college football’s larger systemic issues better than the Senator.
I love this blog (words I thought I’d never type as a 51 year old man), I love the community, and, like you all, even though I never met Bluto, loved him and what he did for my Georgia Bulldogs.
Go Dawgs. Go you Hairy Dawg Senator!
May Christ welcome you with open arms in Heaven.

My deepest condolences to this great man’s family over his passing. Truly, no man has had a bigger influence on how I view the world of college sports than Mike Brochstein. He was the most thoughtful writer on the subject out there, and a genuinely good person. I’m glad that I got to have a beer with him before the 2015 Alabama game, one of the few highlights of that day.
My prayers of sorrow at his passing and thanksgiving for the life he led. He was a real blessing to so many of us, and I’m thankful for his daily presence in my life for these last 17 years.

As much as anything else going on in college football right now (playoff expansion, conference realignment, etc.), this feels like the end of an era. Like many others, this site was often my first internet stop of the day, and one I checked multiple times each day. RIP Senator, Bulldawg Nation will miss your wit and wisdom.

You started GTP when the UGA and CFB blogosphere was very saturated. I remember liking your writing, and still thinking GTP wouldn’t be able to last. Boy was I wrong. The quantity and quality of your posts were unmatched.
I hope your loved ones take comfort knowing what an impact you had on Dawgnation and the CFB world. In the past few years I haven’t been reading GTP as religiously as before. As such, I’m gonna take some time and scroll through the blog. RIP Senator.

Someone needs to attempt to take the mantle and continue this fantastic blog, and when you do, please send me an email so I can continue consuming my daily dose of all things DAWGS🐾🐶

In honor of one of the Senator’s most beloved irregular blog topic, I humbly submit this musical palate cleanser.
I don’t know how he felt about Lynyrd Skynyrd, I don’t remember him ever saying. I know he was the right age to either love them or, as some do, hate them. I hope he loved them because I can’t think of a more appropriate send off than the greatest live rock and roll performance of the greatest “send-off” song ever.
May you be carried home on the wings of angels, Senator.

I think the reason this news hurts is that the Senator has been a part of my daily life during some formative years, from ages 26-43. During that time, I’ve had kids, moved houses and states, and changed jobs, but GTP has been a constant, with the Senator’s consistent wisdom and wit. During the entirety of “the GTP years,” I’ve lived outside of my home state of GA in ACC country (NC and VA), with its paltry CFB culture. My tether to this blog, however, somehow made it feel like home wasn’t really so far away. Not only has Bluto shaped my daily routine, over time I’ve come to mark the seasons with his regular posts: his signing day recaps, G-Day observations, pre-season SEC team predictions, post-season self-evaluations, and of course, his annual Turkey Day clip. Today, VA feels a little farther from home, and the UGA blogosphere seems a lot quieter. Thanks, Bluto, for this labor of love. It’s made a difference in my life.

I apologize for being late to post but I’m in a spot that lacks coverage. I am Tim Peterson formerly known as DC Weez. I was Michael’s roommate in law school, his seatmate at home and away games for over 40 years, and his close friend for more years than I can count. Michael’s closest friends and I will make a GTP tailgate happen this year. Hat’s off to eethomas for his suggestion. No details have been decided but we’ll try to inform GTPers in advance. I hope you can join us this fall to celebrate the life of the Senator. RIP DGD!

Were you at the GTP Tailgate at the Notre Dame game? I worked an extra year so I could keep my f/s tickets for that year. I flew my brother in from LA where is an attorney. We walked all over on the tracks thinking there would be some big GTP sign somewhere. We finally located the sign scribbled with a felt tip that just rear GTP. We spent about an hour there just shooting the shit at were treated like we were old pals. I’m so glad we took the time to track it down.

I’ve been trying to read through the comments and had to go upstairs away from my wife and daughter cause I was getting so choked up. I believe it was ee who said a while back that this blog was his corner bar. I couldn’t agree more. And this is the only blog that I frequent on any kind of regular basis, not just football, but any blog, period. I stopped by three or four times every day. As others have said, I don’t really know what I will do to fill this void. The senator will be truly missed.

This is the end of such an awesome era for us Dawg Fans. And it has come far too soon. Never in a thousand years would I believe this was going to happen. I am saddened and in utter disbelief. I don’t think any person I’ve never met has had such a profound effect on my daily life. The man was the end all be all for so many when it came to UGA Football. I agreed with 90% of the things this guy wrote. That’s not typical at all. We were lucky to have you as long as we did Bluto, but what I wouldn’t give for another couple of decades or so. Wow, an absolute kick to the nuts. Haven’t checked every day the last week or so & missed this yesterday. Feared there was a serious problem when we heard nothing from him, but not this. This has been my only go to spot for UGA news for years. This has all probably been written by others but the things I’m going to miss so much. The daily gator made me so happy! The game day post, the Notre Dame game day post! 🙂 He was a terrific, insightful and humorous writer who never seemed to miss any piece of relevant GA news. We’ll all be just a little bit sadder when opening our browsers for the first time each day. God Bless Senator, you’ve been a bright spot in a sometimes dreary world!⁶

It’s such an odd feeling to lose someone you never met but at the same time had such a common bond with.

2. THANK YOU for allowing the Senator to share his talents with all of us.

RIP Senator and my condolences to his family. This has been my first stop every morning for 10 years (and I often visited multiple times per day). My joy and knowledge of Georgia football was immeasurably enhanced by this blog and that will never be replaced. The Senator covered Georgia football and college football in general (especially the off-the-field business) with insight and wit that was better than anyone else–including those who are paid to cover the sport. As the internet has evolved into a mean, corporate, click-bait, advertising machine, the Senator maintained a simple, warm, witty, insightful, and lively home for people to share in the collective joy we get from Georgia football. I can’t thank you enough Mr. Brochstein. Being a Georgia fan will never be quite as good without you, but at least you went out on top before the changes could drive you away. Cheers to the GOAT!

I’d love a collection of SB’s top few hundred posts printed out as a book. All his best arguments, great takes on big cfb / Georgia moments and anything that ties us back to moments in Georgia football history. Plus his best jabs at Auburn Tech and Florida. Bonus appendix music section. Now that would make a holiday gift guide.
If anyone has any idea how to take on something like that, I think more than a few of us would pay out the ass for it. I can’t think of a better Georgia football book. Hell I’d even re read some of the most epic comment sections.

You know, I keep coming back the last couple of days to read more comments and I’m happy that I’m never disappointed to see I’m not the only one.
Also, am I the only person anywhere who doesn’t give a crap about the Super Bowl? I’ve only watched one of them since the gut punch that was 51, and that was last year because my friend Joe basically made me watch it. I’ve just come to find that I don’t like the NFL. Everything’s the same. Everyone but San Francisco runs the same variation of the pro spread offense. Everyone runs the exact same multiple defense. Every game either comes down to a FG to win as the clock expires or it’s a blowout. Where CFB has so much variety, the NFL is boring homogeneity.
Anyway… get off my lawn.
Musical palate cleanser? I just texted my friend this, and thought I’d share with y’all. I love how when you put on Physical Graffiti, and you get to side 2 and you remember that Zeppelin decided they wanted to do a stanky funk song… and it’s amazing.

I have seen where many associate the Senator’s passing with that of Larry. I couldn’t agree more and I find that very fitting because both men served in their capacity as the collective voice of the DawgNation.

Such utterly devastating news. Like many of you, I started every morning with this website and the Senator’s work to aggregate and synthesize all the relevant CFB/UGA news while adding his own opinion was unique and will never be replicated.
I have to ask: where else do you all read UGA football writing that seems worthwhile?
I have generally avoided the recruiting sites since I don’t care enough to pay for breaking news on the whereabouts of kids who may never end up on campus. I wandered away from Dawg Sports years ago but would love if that elevated to a higher level.
I always felt proud that UGA had one of the best fan blogs in the entire sport. I’d love to see a new place for that to continue, knowing Senator can never be replaced.

Like many have stated before me, this was my usual stop every morning, because if it wasn’t pertinent UGA news, it was something interesting or funny. When I read the headline of this post, my heart sank. I had feared the worst when he wasn’t up for blogging about Saban retiring, but hoped he would bounce back. The couple weeks break a little while back was also hard for me, as it was a lot of us, because I relied on that morning reading. Didn’t realize how important it was to me until I didnt have it anymore. I have literally clicked every single post of the Senator’s since around 08-09, and used to comment on here and run my mouth.. a lot. The Senator and I couldn’t have been further apart, politically, and that got the best of me and got me banned from commenting. I deserved it, this was pre-Playpen days.. I emailed him some time after, not to ask to be un-banned, but to let him know that even while banned from commenting, I was still a staunch supporter of GTP and his musings, and would continue to be until it was no more. His style was unmatched, and his commenters the absolute best (except a few bama trolls, but I won’t give them the pleasure of naming them). He responded to my email, and I’ll keep that private, out of respect. I never attempted to comment again, until now. He was not only a DGD, he was a forgiving man, as well. His “voice” through thousands of posts will echo throughout Dawg Nation. As others have also said above, he was similar to some of us as Larry, a monumental Legend of UGA football. Well respected by his peers, all the way down to scamps like me, he will be sadly missed. RIP Senator.

I for one would like to keep this site going forward. I don’t know how copyrights on these type things work. If the family has the rights I think it would be a great way to keep his memory alive by continuing as is. I know the senators post cannot be replaced, but we could just come on here to comment or someone could be put in charge of a daily topic. If there is a cost to maintain the site at I would be more than happy to contribute to covering any expenses.

I’ve never seen him comment here, but maybe that’s because he does it under another name, but here’s something I’d like y’all to chew-on.
It’s obvious we want to keep coming here. I have no idea if the Senator named a “successor” as someone else mentioned he could have done. I see gurkhadawg has, as I have done, volunteered to pay the yearly WordPress fee to keep the site active. We want to keep coming back here as much to honor the Senator and keep his memory alive as to keep up with each other.
It may be too soon, and if it is I apologize, but I was thinking of someone who seems to be pretty loved in DawgNation, who is funny, who does a killer Matthew McConaughey impression, who’s a pretty good writer, and who loves the Dawgs as much as any of us do, who I think is the kind of guy who has experience in blogging who could also ride heard over all us a-holes and keep everything in check. I don’t know if he’d want the job, I’m gonna DM him, but if you’re reading this Wes Blankenship, I can’t think of a better man to continue the Senator’s legacy.

My thought is, IF the Senator’s family isn’t interested in continuing GTP, the filthy animals that gathered here day after day can continue on. I’ve setup a WordPress site and waiting to see what the family decides. If the blog continues on, then what I setup can be deleted. If not, I think with some of y’all pitching in to write posts, we can continue the Senator’s legacy.
The site is active, one post is up for discussion. Those that wish to be writers can speak up there. I figure we give this about a month for the family to pick up the pieces and decide what they want to do. Not trying to step on anyone’s toes or take anything from them but, I like this group that comments here and I’d like to see us all stay together. You can chime in right here or here: https://gtprefugees.wordpress.com/

I mean, that’s cool and that could wind up being what happens… but I was thinking more like keeping GTP going if that option is on the table. A living memorial to the Senator that is just one part of his non-familial legacy. If there’s no further update here, I was thinking of reaching out once it’s appropriate to ask. As I said, and as Gurkha said, I don’t think it would be a problem to pay to keep this WordPress site up and running for as long as possible.

First, come on dude. No need for that kind of talk.
Secondly, you also have completely missed the point of Leonidas who told Xerxes from a historical perspective. It’s not that they died. They knew they would die. It’s that they were unwilling to submit.
I wouldn’t expect someone who used the insult you did to understand that was the point, though.
Historical ignorance is one thing, but let’s keep politics off the board, okay?

To the Senator’s family: I am so very sorry for your loss. You guys are in my prayers.
This place has been daily morning stop for well over a decade. I can’t remember precisely when I started reading here. But, I’m pretty sure it was sometime during the 2007 season. Like Tony Waller said on the “Waiting Since Last Saturday” blog, The Senator was a voice of reason within the collective Dawgnation psyche and a steadying force for many of us who follow UGA. I found that over time, my own perspective on Georgia Football and college football at large changed into something a little more reasonable and balanced. Maybe that has something to do with age. But I’m certain that this place had a hand in that as well. He and his voice will be missed. Godspeed sir and thank you for giving us this place to share in your college football experience. We’re better fans as a result of it.
PS I will REALLY miss your roasting of Eric with a “K” over at Roll Bama Roll.

RIP Senator! I’m saddened to hear this news as we all are. I have started each day for the last 15 plus years reading your blog and associated comments first thing every morning. Something I looked forward to each day. I’ve only posted a time or two, but I relished your thoughts on all things UGA Football, NCAA, and our rivals. I appreciate all the love and thoughtfulness you put into this blog all these years and the numerous legendary posters on this site. I will miss your insights, musical palate cleansers, gift ideas and trip updates. It has taken me a few days to wrap my brain around this. May God Bless your family and comfort them during this time. Thank You for all the years you provided this wonderful blog for all of us Dawg Fans. You truly are a DGD! Tell Munson, HBTFD!! Behave you Scamp!

January, 11 2022. Bleary eyed and still giddy, I came to work and along with the regular morning coffee, I with great relish logged into this magnificent forum. To say I was distracted for a bit that morning would be a colossal understatement. I bring this up just to say that the words of the late great Senator and the rest of you wonderful Dawgs were of great importance to me on that auspicious day. If this is the end, then it has been a great ride. There are some many things at will miss. Not the least of which will be the musical palette cleansers. Our Dawg Nation has lost one great voice. May he live in our hearts forever.

I’m sure there were more than a few in B-M who did read the Senator’s thoughts, and I’m also sure, for some of them, the Senator was a source of near-constant aggravation because he was unwilling to be served shit after being told it was filet.
The Senator was the voice for all us great unwashed. We plebeians whom the UGA Athletics Association is content to mostly ignore as they cash our checks.
I think I will miss that from him most of all. He had a platform to speak for all us peons. Who speaks for us now?

This is my biggest concern.
I actually think this blog was truly an important part of Georgia Football turning the ship around. From moving on from Donnan to Richt, to getting rid of Two Thumbs, Van Halanger, and eventually even making the move of Richt->Smart.
I’m not saying its the sole reason by any means. But I think GTP was a constant source of pressure/voice from the “unwashed masses” as you say that helped avoid completely being satisfied with 9/10 game seasons and making tons of money.
Is GTP at all deserving of some small amount of credit for nudging Kirby to give up on the false allure of manball and go out and hire Monken?
Now what? Thank god we have Kirby, but after that?

As many others have stated, this blog has been part of my morning routine for over 15 years. Even though I rarely commented, I would be so excited to read every post and browse the messages. I think the greatest compliment I can pay is that when I open up a Chrome browser, I instantly type in “blut…” to click the link address. This is pure muscle memory without any thought. It is like my body just does it, on auto pilot. As chrome got smarter I eventually just type in “get..” for Get the picture link address. The past few days I have been trying to gather thoughts, and everytime I open a browser instantly I am typing “GET”, and I am met with sorrow, remorse (for not getting to the GTP tailgate), and ultimately appreciation. It was such a privilege to witness the Senator’s immense talent. His humor and snark are unrivaled. The GTP lexicon became entrenched in my conversations with friends about UGA football and college football. I was fortunate to see UGA win both national championships, surrounded by friends and family. It was the greatest moment as a sports fan. It was equally as amazing to read the blog the next day, and to get Senator’s take on it. I am glad he got to experience those seasons before passing.
My deepest condolences to the Brochstein family. Michael brought so much joy and laughter through his efforts with this blog. I will continue to type “GET” everytime I open a browser and think of him, and his greatness. I hope that never leaves me.

I saw this post on Saturday night and it was a punch in the gut. I’m truly saddened. This site has become the first place I go every morning and I’ve come here three times today already just out of reflex. I have truly enjoyed the community spirit that the Senator fostered here in the comments and I fear it won’t be replaced. I used to frequent the DawgVent but it became toxic over the years and just mean-spirited as hell and it wasn’t fun anymore. This place never did because the Senator did a wonderful job of making sure that the people who came to play in his sandbox played nice. There wasn’t much in terms of moderating that had to be done, but it was done fairly and it made this my favorite Dawg site on the internet.
But even more than the community here in the comments, what made this site great was the Senator’s talent as a writer. His wit was singular and understated, and his callbacks that built running jokes that truly became so extensive that he built his own lexicon brought humor to the sometimes painful and always exhilarating experience of being a Bulldog. Many times while sitting in Sanford Stadium I’ve thought, “I can’t wait to read what the Senator says about that tomorrow.” Now, we won’t be able to. But I’ll still think it, just the same. Rest In Peace, Senator. Truly, a Damn Good Dawg.

What made this blog so great was not only the Senator’s devotion to posting great material and insights daily, but then also his sticking around in the comments section to keep us all ‘scamps” in line. I know I stepped out of bounds more than a few times over the years, and he was always quick to reel me back in. I’m sure I deserved to be banned a time or ten. At times, he was the only thing that kept some folks from meeting behind a Waffle House somewhere and fist fighting over some silly argument about Bobo or politics (lol….remember the Wednesday Playpen everyone?). I will miss this site and this community. I have been a devoted visitor here for many years. I read some truly great arguments between posters and Bluto (who was absolutely difficult to best in a debate) and laughed my ass off more times than I can count at everyone’s humor, insight, stories, slights, fellowship, and over all shenanigans. My sincerest condolences to the Senator’s family and friends. I never met him, but like many here feel though I have lost a good friend as well.

My eyes are finally dry: I can post!
As many wrote above, this is my daily ritual: my coffee, my cereal or oatmeal and to the computer for GTP. I am unwilling (incapable?) of giving this up. So I’ve continued for weeks, hoping The Senator would resume his posts. I actually checked GTP early morning on the 9th and it was not until later that day that a fellow Dawg fanatic texted me the horrific news. In spite of this sure knowledge, I have continued to click on GTP as my first “visit” since that day — partially because that is what you do — partially to read the comments. Tributes from those that knew him well and many from folks like me, internet and email “friends.” All of us were challenged to think by his blog (and his insightful views on the landscape of college football). No doubt some were incensed (a polite way of saying pissed off).
I have never deleted the cellphone numbers for my BIL or for 2 of my dearest friends. I cannot/won’t delete the speed dial bookmark for GTP. I will visit, as I have done during my morning ritual, as long as they let me.
Senator, thank you. I could list all the ways you have entertained me, made me laugh, enlarged my musical horizons and most importantly, challenged me to think about college football and life but THANK YOU will suffice. I miss you and the void expands!
To the family, there are no words; May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, be with you now and evermore. Thank you for sharing a bit of him with us.
RIP Senator

I’ve been reading the Senator’s blog for over 15 years; I’ve always been a rabid Dawgs fan, but it was difficult when working overseas and in other parts of this nation to connect with a group of fellow fans. I noticed that posts in this last year were fewer, and I worried that health issues he’d alluded a couple of years ago ago had crept back. When the “Fan Tax” post didn’t change last week, my heart began to sink; when the rumors and fears were realized, my heart broke. I’ve so enjoyed reading his commentary throughout the blog and each subject, including the “Montana Project” – guess he doesn’t need that retirement location. It’s been like losing a very respected friend.
May God bless and sustain his family and loved ones in their grief, and I pray the He will watch over them, and we, his bereft fans.

Been at a loss for words since Bluto’s passing was made public. Honestly, this page is the first one I visit in my morning screw around time at work. It’s my number one bookmark in my browser on phone, work and home computers. He truly was the epitome of a Damn Good Dawg. He always made stats understandable and humorous and knew how to always stick it to those rivals I won’t mention. FTMFs. He stayed away from politics, which in today’s atmosphere was rare even in sports writers. Yes, he was sports writer, not just a casual blogger. He was the Larry Munson of sports writers. He spent more time writing on UGA football than a lot of us spend actually working out jobs. His passing left a huge hole in the Dawgosphere. Rest in Peace, Michael. Go Dawgs!

I read these tributes to our dear Bulldog friend over and over. I get a knot in my throat and misty eyed as I read. I feel as if I am wondering in the wilderness, lost without our common interest and compelling CFB thoughts. I stopped watching the news several years ago because it was just noise. I had to have my dose of sensibility that I found with GTP. I seemed to have quoted or shared stories with any CFB fan about all things Bulldog or any other team we loved to hate. It has been my daily routine for years. I keep checking back even though I know he is not here. I have been better because of GTP. I will struggle to find a replacement. I have been a seldom poster, but I had to get my feelings on the blog.
You scamps will all be ok and we will live to cheer the Bulldogs no matter the circumstances. We all have been better because of this community that he built.

Matt H (gotta give us your GTP handle) can take a bow on this but thought it was another awesome tribute, this time from Stuart Mandel’s recent mailbag at The Athletic:
Last week, prolific Georgia blogger Senator Blutarsky — Michael Brochstein — passed away. He played a part in your most famous column — The Kings/Knights/Barons of College Football. I’m sure you have a story or two about him going back and forth on the final elevation of UGA to king status. — Matt H., Atlanta
I never met the Senator, but I was very sad to read of his passing. You are correct: He took it so personally that I didn’t have Georgia among the Kings in my original 2007 column that he enlisted a Dawgs fan in Montana to do a man-on-the-street video attempting to disprove my theory that average college football fans in that state would not be able to identify the “G” helmet.
I appreciated that the Senator/Michael had such a great sense of humor about the whole thing. When Georgia ended its 41-year national title drought in 2021, I knew I’d finally elevate the Dawgs in my 2022 column, so I reached out to him for comment. And we had a very enjoyable e-mail exchange.
“Short answer,” he wrote. “Bout damn time.” Followed by a much longer, more nuanced answer.
My deepest condolences to Michael, his family and all of his readers. I’m glad he got to see his beloved Dawgs move up a random sports writer’s list and more importantly, take home two actual trophies.

RIP to the Senator.
I found his blog around 06 (maybe the infamous “blah blah blah” post about South Carolina game?) and this was my one and only sports blog thereafter.
So many epic thread battles: Murray vs. Mett, fire or keep CMR, UGAA reserve account and the IAF.
I was a Disney Dawg for yrs…until I wasn’t (10/3/15).
I opposed NIL…until I didn’t.
Quite often it was the intelligent give and take b/w the Senator and many others that persuaded me. That’s what I loved about this place. As an attorney, I knew that you had to bring your “A” game to a debate with many on here.
He will be missed and can never be replaced. A life well lived.

Reading this blog was as much a part of my experience of college football as the game itself over the past decade. I enjoyed his writing immensely and was always impressed by his brevity and wit. I bet I’ve spent more time checking this blog than I have watching the games with how prolific he was, and I think he made me a smarter and more even-handed fan of the game. I will miss his writing because it added a lot to my enjoyment of the game, but that is not what made this news hurt when I read it.
This news hurts because of what the blog and its author have meant to me over the past ten years. Because he was such an good writer — and such a prolific writer — I felt like I knew the person behind the words. His unique voice, equal parts hopeful and jaded, gave me something to connect to even when things were dark and I had trouble enjoying other things.
Even though we never met, I am grateful that he was here, and I am sad that he is gone. And to Michael’s family and friends – thank you for supporting him in this hobby – I am so sorry for your loss.

I was interested in what he had to say and highly respected his opinions, and I was extremely grateful for all the work he did to go through the enormous all-you-can-eat buffet of daily news and identify the small handful of things that were actually worth consuming. Or rather, the metaphor doesn’t quite work because a huge part of the Senator’s value was that he made the content worth consuming through context and commentary. (Maybe more like a sushi chef? I digress.) The dude was obviously incredibly smart, funny, and interesting, and I am envious of the people who had the privilege of knowing him personally.
I am also extremely grateful for the community he created. In a time of increasing political and cultural polarization, when I personally often struggle to successfully empathize with people who have joined a different political tribe, I found it comforting and reassuring to see the friendly banter among people of all walks of life in GTP’s comments. I’m not aware of any “water cooler” online or in person that comes close to the community and culture that the Senator built through 17(?) years of high quality daily efforts.
He was a great man, and I will miss him.

Man alive, I miss The Senator.
We had Scott Cochran leave and eleven… ELEVEN Dawgs invited to the Combine.
They’ll be starting their workouts soon in Athens. When that happens I think it’ll really hit me that we’re going into a season without The Senator’s voice to chronicle it.

I know that none of us could live up to his standard…but if someone or a few of us were willing to begin this again— like Flounder Field at Senator Blutarsky Stadium, replete with the same kickass Dooley/James Brown pic (that should never ever change). New name or the same, there is just too much goodness and history here to let it go.
If the Senator’s family would let other folks run the blog (not Derek) or import the history to a new blog to keep it going—it would be the best way to honor him and keep these rabble rousers, scamps, and ne’er do wells all commenting on Georgia Football.
And if this keeps on for generations—my what a detailed book about Georgia football it could make.

Totally agree. To that end Morris Day has been putting together GTP Refugees for us all to comment/discuss during this time of mourning for the Senator and while we see what happens with this site. For now it is a placeholder, but it sure is nice to chat with the peanut gallery with everyone’s handle the same as it’s been here.

Holy crap, did y’all see what Brian Herrien did?
Apparently he is now saying he regrets ever going to Georgia, because getting on the field to play was political and he’s never seen a RB in CFB or the NFL who’s better than he is.
Here’s who the leading rusher was in each of Herrien’s four years in Athens:

Over at GTP Refugees I put up a comment about the WR coach opening I’m interested in, based on the location on the calendar we find ourselves right now and where the position has been the last several years (no superstar, good but not great recruiting, good development, need for portaling with more frequency due to our preferred NIL structure of more $ going to established players)….who best fits this new world, who might be able to break through the WR recruiting ceiling created by UGA history, negative recruiting against it and the NIL reality? And is status quo just fine for us? At this point Kirby can get almost anyone he wants on the defensive side of the ball. Does that translate to offense as well?

There’s a few names that come to mind and I’d add Chris Conley. He’s near the end of his NFL career and he just showed off at this year’s SB. Kids would know his name and he’s a great example of how hard work pays off. I don’t remember how high he was in the star rankings. Just a thought. Disclaimer: there’s no experience with recruiting. That may be a hard stop for Kirby.

100% hard stop for Kirby. And Conley may still get picked up in the NFL next year.

Yeah, it is. Conley showed maturity when he was in Athens and seemed to be an all-around good man. He didn’t play for Kirby so there’s no relationship either.

I saw a report we hired Coley for WR coach. He was a great recruiter first time as WR coach and developed the recruits. Hopefully he does well there again.

Not sure about that, Debby. His best WR was Isaiah McKenzie who he barely coached. All the WRs at A&M stagnated. I’m very much on the fence. I just assumed T-Rob could have covered South Florida but maybe not. BMac was such a good technician coach, so I figured Kirby would go in the same direction, or find a young guy who could recruit. Coley’s connections with the new UGA clout should be a good combo though.

Thanks to all the kind, generous words from all the regular posters here.
You are far kinder than the Senator himself, who never missed an opportunity to criticize the NCAA, the SEC, the coaches, the commenters, the fan bases, colleagues he disagreed with, even the very culture of the southern sport fan.
He didn’t just criticize policies, he often enjoyed painting them as morally repugnant men, of which, of course, he was not one.
He offered no charity to men in the football world who had stumbled, forever holding them as a sum of their sins and transgressions, unable to find redemption in his eyes. He accused many of being rape facilitators, racists, and countless other invectives They were men (nearly to a one) that he had never met or spoken to in any direct fashion, but they received his rebuke and judgement nonetheless.
He was a strong advocate for policies which would destroy the very sport he professed a passion for, the destruction of women’s sports with the acceptance of the trans-female athlete, ID-less voting, and various other social issues which fester away at American society and lead inevitably to the cultural rot of entire nation.
He was a vocal proponent of vaccine mandates, scoffed (if not banned) anyone that dare disagree, and furthered the corporate-government official narrative that the experimental medical treatment was safe and effective, both of which have been factually incorrect.
May the Lord be more charitable to him in the world to come than he has been to his fellow man.

So, how is everyone feeling about Coley coming back?
Yes, I would have liked to see Hines Ward being given the chance, but unlike the Bobo hire I think this one works. It opens up South Florida in a big way for us again. Who doesn’t want more Sonys and Cooks?
Also, Coley is the only WR Coach we’ve had who landed a 5-star (yep, Pickens).
Now if we could only somehow swap Bobo for Buster Faulkner, I think we could actually win the whole dang thing again!

Now that Coley’s back, we better hope Kirby doesn’t go all in on promoting from within!!

He couldn’t cut it as an offensive coordinator, but he was good as a WR coach and that’s all we’re asking him to do. He’s also a dynamite recruiter, so he checks all the boxes. I am just surprised to see him back – I’m surprised that Kirby brought in someone for recruiting purposes who seems so obvious as a candidate to jump ship as soon as he can, and I’m surprised that Coley came back. I’d gotten the feeling there was bad blood between them after Coley was canned.

Why would Kirby have bad blood? Because he made a mistake and it got exposed?

I remember watching the Texas A&M coaches locker room broadcast of the Georgia-Alabama national championship game and Coley came across pretty smugly when things weren’t going well for UGA. I read silly message board things or tweets over the years suggesting that Coley talked shit about Kirby over the years since getting canned. Obviously Kirby isn’t that bothered by any of it even if it actually was real, I’m saying that it surprised me. That’s all.
LikeLike
That’s not what I saw during that broadcast. I’ve rewatched that version of the National Championship game multiple times, and every single time, what I’ve always noticed was Coley getting teary-eyed at the end of the game after Kelee’s interception return for a touchdown. He was happy, crying literal tears of joy for the players he recruited and the coaches he was in the mud with for years.
Maybe ignore some of those message board ruminations? 😉
LikeLike
I’m happy to ignore the message board stuff, but I saw what I saw from Coley in that broadcast when Georgia was running its head into the wall in the first half of the game. I also don’t really remember thinking he looked happy at the end – maybe more in disbelief. Happy for the players, sure, but that’s not the same as rooting for Kirby Smart and the coach who replaced him as offensive play caller.
YMMV, of course. 😉

I strenuously disagree with your take here, and I think the fact that he’s back in Athens is all the proof I need of that. If Coley was bad-mouthing Kirby in coaching circles or to recruits, that 100% would’ve found its way back to Kirby.
If that doesn’t dissuade you or change your mind, we will simply have to agree to disagree.

Tell me you’re joking about Bobo and Faulkner?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Nope. Simple question, and please answer honestly:
Do you think Mike Bobo could have taken Tech’s crappy collection of nobodies and a couple of decent transfers and create a Top-30 offense out of it?
Because that’s what Buster Faulkner did. There is no way Bobo does that. No way. He had much better players at Sakerlina and Auburn and shit the bed both places. If Bobo were Tech’s OC last year, they don’t finish 6-6 and get to a bowl game. Faulkner > Bobo. Faulkner was Monkey’s true heir, but Kirby “Dan Quinned” the hire. You remember Dan Quinn, right? He had Matt LeFleur and Mike McDonald ON HIS STAFF and instead of promoting them to OC and QB coach in 2017, he let them walk and brought in Sark and that was it for the Falcons chances. Sark was good, but not good enough. That’s literally the best thing you can say about Mike Bobo: He’s good, but not good enough.
Alternatively, last year on offense we benefitted from an easy schedule and Bobo spit the bit by going Uber-conservative, taking the ball out of his best-player’s hands for 2.5 quarters in Atlanta. Classic Bobo terrible play calling.
Also, if you look at the Sakerlina and Barn games, those were exactly the kind of “offense doesn’t show up against bad teams” type of games we’d lose one or two of every single year Bobo was the OC from 2007-2014. Even in the “best-ever” season of 2014, we lost three games we never should have lost, and only one of them was the defense’s fault. The other two, the offense didn’t show.
The only reason we beat Sakerlina and the Barn last year is because we had Kirby-level talent, not Richt-level talent.
Bobo is who he always was. In believe we’re no better than 10-2 this coming season. We’re going to lose to Bama and Texas, and maybe even Ole Miss in 2024, and at least in two of those games, like with Bama in Atlanta, it’s because the offense won’t show up. Classic Bobo.
I’ll go one further, Ranger: Had Faulkner been our OC in 2023, we Threepeat. I’ll go to my grave believing that.

What you point out has some merit for your argument’s sake only. I’m open minded but not to the point that my brains fall out. I think the way Bobo brought the new QB1 along gradually was brilliant. Your treatment of close wins as actual losses is symptomatic of Bobo Derangement Syndrome. I’ll be interested on your take of how the Dawgs winning this coming season’s NC was in spite of Bobo.

If I’m wrong about Bobo, I’m wrong.
Right now, I’m not. However, being correct today doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong tomorrow. We get new information all the time. Only a fool stands their ground after the ground shifted beneath them.
I will say, your faith in Mike Bobo is truly blind, because if we do win even an SEC Title with him in 2024, it’d be the first title Bobo has ever won while calling plays.
I’m not a blind faith guy.

Faulkner? Really? That rank speculation simply shows that you’re not only wrong, you know you’re wrong and are just making shit up to shore your argument.

Buster Faulkner took a bunch of misfit toys and created a Top-30 Offense with them. That is an indisputable fact. That you claim this is not is weird, because it’s something that actually happened.
You never answered the question, Doggie: Do you think Mike Bobo, who shit the bed at Sakerlina and The Barn with better talent, could have gone to Tech and taken those players behind that terrible offensive line and create a Top-30 Offense.
It’s a simple question. Yes or No?

First, yes.
Secondly, that argument has so many holes you could strain your cannabutter in it. Top 30 my ass. ACC schedule. Like the number 2 Louseville defense against UGA in the Belk Bowl w/Chubb. It means shit. Your entire argument is shit and makes no sense to rational people. Admit that you simply hate Bobo. If I didn’t consider you a friend I’d have some choice things to say to you.

My attitude here, always, unlike some others who’ve commented recently, is that we were all here at The Senator’s pleasure. He could do and say whatever he wanted; we could not.

I gotta say, I agree with Corch here. I think Kirby made a mistake promoting Bobo to OC. I think he should have hired Faulkner. Faulkner, in my opinion, uses his offensive weapons better than Bobo. I thought the entire reason for bringing Faulkner in when he did was to learn from Monken and be the heir apparent. I think that plan changed once Bobo was hired as an analyst. Faulkner looks to be a more creative play caller to me. Just my .02 cents.
