Shorter Nick Saban: It’s not fair for Ole Miss to try to score on my defense.
************************************************************************************
UPDATE: Allow Hugh Freeze to retort.
“I think we’re going to get hurt because they’re so big and physical. Obviously I’m for it. I think it’s an equalizer and it’s something I believe in. I have great respect for Nick and what he says but of course we’re going to be on opposite sides of this debate.”
He exploits every single loophole that he can in recruiting and staffing. Should he get to set the rules on the field, too? Hell, no. If someone comes up with an offensive strategy that burns his defense, let the little son of a bitch sweat.

He’s got his way, others have theirs. He can adjust.
If not, he won’t be the first that the game has passed by.
That said, I’m not sure if this is a trend,or just a moment in time.

I totally agree with Saban. First, lets give time for defenses to line up so that we can avoid injuries. Second, we should stop recruiting the really big and fast kids because they can hurt someone. Finally, since teams are scoring so many points, we should take a look again at the forward pass rule. Perhaps limiting the amount of forward passes a series? Either way, until we get back to the Harvard Yale 7-6pt ‘scoring orgies’ (to borrow a phrase from Grizzard), we should tweak things to work in Alabama’s favor.

We can have the players wear foil hats and bras too. Consider replacing the ball with a balloon.

Well at least we know where we can find referees to work those games Andrew…

I don’t think Nick Saban can get any shorter.

But not Randy Newman short. Like the no-huddle, that wouldn’t be fair. “The verdict? Nick Saban—fearsome intimidator, coaching impresario, unmatched innovator—wears some big-ass lifts when he makes non-game public appearances.”

TMQ over at ESPN did his column this week on resetting the rule book to bring some balance back to the game – and he hates Saban. We’re going to be hearing more of this sort of thing moving forward. Games in eight inches of snow are great fun for a weekend – but the novelty wears off if it happens every week. Same thing with 70-66, IMO.

If his guys are out of position, won’t they actually be safer? No one actually run toward the little snowflake.

So, as a defensive coach, his job is a little bit tougher? “More stressful?”
How much is he pulling down a year?
I think that’s adequate compensation for him to find a way to deal with giving up 14 points.

I don’t have time for this shit…I gotta get ready for the biggest game in Georgia football history this week.

I had not thought about an injury angle, but I guess there could be something to that.
Mainly, however, I just want to know what the rules are going to be. It seems to me that at some time in the recent past, UGA was trying to go up tempo and the refs were putting on the brakes saying it was an SEC rule. Did this change? I was surprised that Mizzou was allowed to run as quickly as they wanted.
I am not a huge Saban fan, but it does seem like there are conflicting messages coming from the SEC office. Either there is a tempo rule or there isn’t, and if there isn’t let the Big Dawg Eat as well. We certainly have the personnel for it.

Sounds like somebody’s scared of the Dawgs in the Dome…

That’s what I thought too, would be an interesting matchup.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s it. Maybe Georgia can go all “blackout” on Bama again.

Would love that too, black jerseys in the Dome, not the fan involvement. Could care less what color our fans wear, and don’t like announcing it up front. Bama fans typically focus on talking that part up, fact was we have had great success against them in the past decade so they want to talk about the time where we had the roof fall in for most of one half. Bama is a very good team but they forget, eevryone doesn’t bow to them. I think UGA would be their toughest matchup, no one else in the SEC has the offense to test them, imo. First things first.

I was (mostly) kidding about the blackout comment. If, and that’s a big if, Bama makes it to the Georgia Dome, Georgia would be the most formidable opponent from the East. Georgia matches up to Bama better in talent and schemes.

How ’bout just make the offense punt? Doesn’t that get the defense off the field?

I would love to have asked him this series of questions (of course if he would be required to answer, which he would not).
Who was hurt in the game because of a fast paced offense? No one.
Who won? Alabama
Who is not lined up properly in a fast tempo series? Nick Saban’s Defense.
Who,according to your argument, is going to get hurt? Nick Saban’s Defense.
Who is going to suffer if they are not in condition to play a fast tempo game? Nick Saban’s Defense.
Then what is the solution? Stop recruiting big, unconditioned kids that are not going to pass a college course and you won’t have a problem. Or maybe you can just use this as another way to grey shirt these kids. Well, he could not hang with the fast paced offense so it has to be a medical condition.

What a well-reasoned and sober approach. I’m sure this exchange would change his mind. 🙂

ESPN used the same headline. He doesn’t care if kids get hurt unless it affects his team. He is getting as whiny as Spurrier.

they used it an hour after you did.

Now I’m really confused. I thought Nick was the bitchy one and Spurrier was the whiny one.

Which is the one with all the national championships? Oh….wait. See when Nick says stuff it is preaching, when Spurrier says stuff that gets repeated on this board it is whining.

Actually, we was answering a question presented to him in a press conference. It’s not like he just walked to the podium and started a discourse on offensive styles. Sure, it’s a bit self-serving, but wouldn’t you rather hear an honest, albeit self-serving answer?

+1 for Hugh Freeze who doesn’t have time to put up with Nick bitching about imaginary no-huddle injuries or Spurrier whining about Ole Miss being a cupcake on Georgia’s schedule rather than South Carolina’s.

Boo frickin’ hoo. They are breaking no rules. Deal with it. Coach your guys up better to be prepared for it. Use a time out after the first 6-7 plays to allow you to substitute and give your guys a breather. Play more guys from the start so when they get caught in a drive like that they are already rested as much as possible. In other words do your job and coach your team to counter act it and quit being such a baby. Poor, poor AL where everything is set up to be against them.

Folks, it’s not the first time a Saban coached Bama team has played a hurry up offense. The article is a bit misleading in that he’s not simply railing against the no-huddle offense. In fact, Bama runs a nice version of it as well. There were parts of his comments that weren’t included in that article.
He’s talking about how offenses get set, see how the defense is lined up and then the whole unit gets un-set, looks at the sideline and then the play is called.
You’re stupid if you don’t then try to change your defensive alignment. Saturday, we were getting caught out-of-position trying to re-adjust.
He also mentioned that much more movement is allowed now – e.g. when offenses turn and look at the sideline, than there used to be.
