As big as Florida’s and South Carolina’s wins were for those teams’ goals this season, they were even bigger structurally. The West no longer enjoys superiority over the East and South Carolina has firmly rearranged the status of the elite in the East.
- Alabama. Wait a minute – the Tide doesn’t play Florida or South Carolina in the regular season? Hmm…
- South Carolina. Consider my remarks last week that Georgia would be the better squad by the end of the year revised and amended.
- Florida. Beat LSU at its own game, which is impressive. I’m not completely sold on that Gator offense, though, Gillislee aside.
- LSU. Okay, so we know that Zach Mettenberger isn’t the next Cam Newton. The Tigers had better hope he’s not the next Brent Schaeffer, either.
- Georgia. On track for the least satisfying ten-win season in the history of college football.
- Mississippi State. The Bulldogs may not be blowing out lesser opposition, but at least they’re beating it.
- Texas A&M. Against just about any other conference team than Ole Miss, six turnovers on the road will get you beat.
- Tennessee. And so we come to another week of waiting to see if Derek Dooley’s team can turn a corner.
- Vanderbilt. Finally got that conference road win, even if it was ugly as all get out.
- Arkansas. Sure, it was only a win over Auburn, but you’ve gotta start somewhere.
- Missouri. Five players suspended, another injury to James Franklin and a home loss to Vanderbilt – the nightmare season continues for the Tigers. Did anyone mention that Alabama comes to town this week?
- Ole Miss. Tough, tough loss. Still, this team continues to show far more signs of life than it ever did last year.
- Kentucky. The Wildcats are in a race between developing quarterbacks and keeping them standing.
- Auburn. You know that rhetorical question you ask fans about whether they’d trade a national title for a few years in the wilderness? It’s not so rhetorical now.
The 10-win season in 2008 wasn’t very satisfying either. Neither was 2004.

I was just about to say the same thing.
Unsatisfying 10-win seasons seem to have become Richt’s stock-in-trade.

maybe if the NCAA approves an extra two regular season, games, Georgia can start to have 12 win seasons that are hollow and unsatisfying.

Ain’t that the truth. The USCe loss is probably tainting any season projections I could make, but it seems likely we’ll end the regular season with Tennessee being the best feather in our cap. I don’t like that notion a bit.

Jesus Christ, what are you talking about? Georgia hasn’t won a national title in thirty some odd years. It’s likely going to finish 2012 with back-to-back double-digit winning seasons.
Saturday night sucked beyond all hope, but some of you people who think you’re historical gurus need to get a grip.

Why the fuck don’t you make your mind about where you stand in regard to this program? You are biggest fence-sitting, wishy washy old maid I’ve ever seen. You just admitted we have a recent record of failing to win a big game, and now you want to unload on me? Did I say we’ve won a national championship in the past 30 years? Georgia used to win big games; we owned SC, we owned FL. Now they own us. And if we played Bama and LSU regularly they’d own us too. We used to a tough, determined football team…now we play like a bunch of scared pussies. I’ve sick of it.

I’ve already said it: Georgia is a very talented second tier SEC team, with all that implies.
Take a look at the program – decade after decade, Georgia has had its ups and downs, its dry spells and its periods of excellence. There is nothing unusual about what’s going on right now. Nothing.
It’s one thing to say that you think with all the resources available to it, Georgia should be in the running for a SEC title on a regular basis. I don’t disagree with that. But that’s a long way from saying that right now we’re suffering through some period of historic suckitude.

And by the way, when I talk about how good this program was, I fully include the early and middle years of Richts tenure. 2001 through 2007 or 2008 was a great time for Georgia football. My issue is that we have quit improving, or even maintaining that level, but have begun sliding downward. And Richt seems either unable, unwilling or uninterested in doing something about it.

When I lived in Athens I did not want to come back home because the thought of sitting thru a boring GT football game was not what I ever wanted to do again.

Having a significantly better winning percentage than we had under Donnan would be cool as well.
(Donnan’s 5 year win pct was .678. Richt’s win pct over the last 6 1/2 yrs is .694.)

I don’t get the logic behind cherry picking comparisons like that. Do Richt’s first five seasons not count anymore?

They count. The point is that we now have 6 plus years of ongoing mediocrity.

The Donnan regime lasted 5 years before we ended it. The current stretch is 6 1/2 years long and going strong.

The 1992 season is, to me, the least satisfying 10 win season. The talent gap between us and both UT and UF was far greater than the talent gap between us and SC and UF now. Moreover, we were more talented than Alabama, who we would have played in the first SECCG had we beaten UT at home or UF.

Look folks, we just got our ass whipped. If I might make a suggestion to the collective, lets all take a deep breath. The sun did come up….oh, wait it is raining here…well presumably the sun came up somewhere.
Despite all my worrying, I am as guilty as anybody of having expectations based on what I want to see, rather than what I see.
I watched the Cocks. What I saw, for the first time was that old Spurrier offensive smoothness, a team that proceeds down the field, not in the fits and starts of the Garcia era, and I was worried.
And in spite of that, in spite of knowing full well that Tennessee could very well have whipped us, and that we had really played nobody of consequence, I thought we would beat South Carolina, I really did think we would win.
Clearly this team is not as good as we convinced ourselves it was.
But it is probably not as bad as it seems to be on the blogosphere this morning.

The ongoing and never improving mediocrity that is Georgia football is indeed as bad as it seems. And something needs to happen to change that.

If the administration decides to make a change, who will they realistically hire that is any better than what we have right now?
This is the question that I have yet to see answered.

That is a question best asked of, and answered by, the “administration”, in this case our Athletic Director. That is his job and his area of expertise. Universities find better football coaches all the time…Southern Cal fires Paul Hackett and hires Pete Carroll; LSU fires Gerry Dinardo and hires Nick Saban; FL fires Ron Zook and hires Urban Myer, etc., etc.

Man I am really sorry our football team has not lived up to your expectations.
Since I am sure you are a big contributor, not just vitriol, but money, too I have no doubt you could walk into Greg McGarrity’s off ice and demand Mark Richt’s resignation.
Please be sure to have a short list in your pocket, your other pocket, so you and Greg can make a decision on our new coach.
Please let us know how that works out so we can get ready for the resurrection of Georgia football from its current doldrums.
I am sure you are ready to assume responsibility for all the assistant coaches’ buyouts, I would expect nothing less from such a scholar of football excellence.
Really glad to have you on board, get that big fat check book out and change things…go to Athens today.

I was right. Even worse was the egging and tp’ing of Aaron Murray and Christian Robinson’s house. It is a good thing it is a bye week. It is hard to believe in yourself when your fans are trashing you. GO DAWGS!!!

Yeah, I take issue with “the sun has come up” comments. Richt did so on twitter yesterday, and it was all I could do to not reply with some salty words for the head coach.
I do not need a “it’s not the end of the world” type of lecture from the head coach or from fellow fans. I know it’s not the end of the world. I have important things in my life that require my daily attention like my family, my faith, and my job. Georgia losing or winning has no bearing on any of those things. However, the football team at my alma mater is the primary, non-important thing I spend my time and money on willingly (with a bad golf game being the other). The fact that I do so provides Coach Richt with a very comfortable lifestyle.
All I demand for my time and my money is a football team that is competitive with teams similar to itself in terms of resources and facilities. I understand that there are ebbs and flows, wins and losses, and good times and bad. I do not expect my team to win every game, but I do expect them to win their fair share. However, for someone who allocates extremely scarce resources to support this program, it is a difficult rationalization to swallow that being above average is sufficient return for his investment solely because that’s what they’ve been for the past 100+ years without mention of the new demographics, politics, and overwhelming difference in money that is being generated and spent on the sport as a whole just in the last decade or so.
Losing to the last ten ranked teams you played is not my idea of being competitive. Go 5-5 in those games. Hell, go 3-7, and I sing a different tune. That, at least, can be chalked up to the variables of the game. But to lose all 10? I find that to be disappointing, and it sounds like many others do, too. If that is deemed sufficient institutionally, then I’ll live with it. I don’t have any other choice. I can’t change my team affiliation, nor would I want to. I love college football, and I can’t change that either. But “money talks, bullshit walks,” in the parlance of our times. And, I am less enthusiastic about parting with mine to watch the product being offered.
