    Wow. Amazing. I’m not a Notre Dame fan but as a college football fan I love their tradition and nostalgia. Question, is there fan base that big? Or are there just a lot of people stopping in on their game like me?

    The ratings claim is a half-truth, since NBC (aka The Notre Dame Network) is a broadcast network and the SC-LSU game was on ESPN, a basic pay cable network.

    Go take a look at the ratings dropoff for MNF when it switched from ABC to ESPN, and you’ll see what sort of effect basic broadcast networks have on ratings.

    ESPN would take their cable ratings over NBC’s broadcast ratings any day, since the revenue per viewer is several orders of magnitude higher.

    ND does so well because they are such a polarizing team. Everyone has an opinion on them. Some folks love them, others hate them. It’s rare for someone to be truly indifferent towards ND. For that reason, they get greater viewership. There are plenty of people who, like me, tune in with the hopes of seeing them get beat. Viewers will watch who they love and who they hate, not as many people tune in to a game in which they have no opinion on either team.

    It also helps when your broadcast partner (worth what, $20 billion?) can’t put a camera looking down the goal line from both directions. Geez, that would have cost them at least $10,000 if they had to buy a new one, $250 shipping and handling if they just sent one they already owned.

    Maybe that angle exists and we just never saw it.

    I would be interested to see how the ratings moved as Stanford moved into a lead in that game. Lots of people love to see the Irish lose. Which definitely makes them relevant.

    Love em or hate em, Notre Dame will always be relevant in any discussion of college football…especially outside the South.

    Even if they are irrelevant, there will be discussion of why that is.

    I ain’t had much actual contact with the Domers, but on my limited sample
    I spec Dawg fans should not feel anything but warm and fuzzy for em.

    Especially for the way the have handled kickoffs in the past.

    Course that may be a second-tier view of things.

    If you used a ND Helmet in the Montana Project, you can bet they would have known what it stood for. In Alabama they play the Movie,” Rudy” before every game in the Big High Schools. Also, ND is Internationally known to Catholic’s.

    Fans who think TV networks only want to cover big games naive. Networks prefer to cover games involving teams with lots of fans…lots. That’s why all of the ESPN crews get woodys when the University of Florida plays anyone, anywhere. It’s not about UF’s tradition, there’s little of that. It’s about UF’s draw in the midwest and up East. Many, many Floridians have ties to family in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and the Philadelphia metro area and most of those transplant “Floridians” have never been exposed to the rabid SEC. Sometime take a look at population and population density of the forementioned places and what you see is large populations and the networks like to go to advertisers to sell them ad time to large populations. So, the next time you think you hear the talking heads rooting for UF, it ain’t about athletics, it’s about big money.

    If they win out, or maybe even if they go 11-1 with their schedule, they will deserve a shot. I like ND, but I don’t think their offense is enough. Their defense is very, very good. And if they can win at USC and Oklahoma they need not apologize anyone.

      I doubt it will happen, Mayor. They will lose one or two and the Dawgs will probably lose one more. But maybe they’ll meet in some bowl, somehow. With all these “locked in” bowl deals, though, it’s hard to imagine.
      I’d also love it.

      I think that we’re out of the NC picture. Even if we win out (and SCar loses another one) and beat BCS #2 Florida and #1 Alabama, we’ll still be ranked lower than undefeated Oregon and Notre Dame. Hell, if we squeak by Bama, they may go ahead of us. Getting dominated by South Carolina probably ended any chance of a national championship. Can’t lose like that. Media and voters would hold it against us for sure.

    The Irish have a huge fan and cheerleader on ESPN. But he was all in for his other former team, South Carolina. Carolina lost, but Mark May gave him hard time on it. May like a lot of us are waiting for the Irish to drop one. Think the Saturday viewers were split with the MLB game and UT-MSU game. Holtz already has them in the BCS as of last week. ESPN will push them.
    That is how the northeast media types, even though Irish are in mid-west, drive for the dollar.
    Take a picture of the Yankees and Orioles. A-Rod benched in game 5, 9 stike outs in series. May have had one hit, too. Going down on some slow off-speed pitches. 37 years old and his bat head speed may be that too. Money talks. $29 million designated hitter in championship games. The O’s, their entire roster payroll comes to under $25 million.
    Irish have a large following.

      It must be difficult for Lou Holltz to be such a cheerleader for the Domers. I’m sure that deep inside he feels conflicted. His greatest success came there (’88 MNC) but he got pushed out because of NCAA violations which occurred while he was HC. I understand he was not contrite about it either. For years he was persona non grata there but miraculously they built a statue of him and invited him back for the dedication after several years. I wonder if the fact that he had become an ESPN football TV analyst had anything to do with that? In any event Holtz has cheated everywhere he has coached. Shame on the Domers for honoring him when he got their program in trouble with the NCAA.

        And we have a big deal basketball tournament in memory of a coach who cheated before cheating was not cool….who knows what motivates this stuff?

        There are not a lot of people who understand Holtz was crooked, the Domers never really talked about it, and the media just seemed to ignore it.

        Trust me, if Notre Dame has one loss, they may very well be in the national championship game…they will probably get a BCS bid with two losses.

    No one has mentioned this–I thought their fan base included NYC–the subway alumni-it seems they were called at one time–I used to hate them-not so much anymore-I hope they beat Kiffin !!

    Their record of wins is largely against weak Big 10 teams. If they keep winning some lucky SEC team will beat the fish out of them.

      Alabama’s best win is against one of those same weak Big 10 teams. Hell, Michigan might wind up the 2d best team on their whole schedule.

      Granted the Florida Defense looks solid….but does anyone REALLY believe that they are the second best team in the country?? I for one do not. Their offense is one step above anemic, they have no pass game to speak of. That all being said they may very well beat us in two weeks, somehow I belive that the team will get their heads out of their collective @sses and go on a run to end the year.
