If you haven’t been paying attention, D-1 football kicks off tonight, Down Under, with Cal facing off against Hawaii.
Which means it is once again time to cue up the Stephen Fry clip and welcome another glorious season of college football.
It is a testament to how much I love CFB that I can appreciate an Iron Bowl game for the spectacle it is. It’s my sincere hope that the people running the sport don’t screw up that vibe beyond redemption.
It is a reflection of all the best things about us.

In a follow-up clip, Fry said upon further reflection he didn’t enjoy it at all because of lack of internet connectivity.

That was great. I could do without the smarmy, “I’m so bemused by this because I’m so above it all” Brithish asshole but the rest of it fired me up.

But the dude got choked up for “God Bless America.” That makes the clip for my old-school, patriotic butt.

Did he? I thought he acted like he thought it was silly and was trying to keep from laughing. He had a look on his face like he smelled shit for most of the clip. Then again he was at the iron Bowl so I guess I can let him slide on that.

Because God Bless America is taken from God Save the Queen – i.e. English national anthem.
Thank goodness for war of 1812 or we’d be singing a copy of our Limey ancestors set to different words as our national anthem.

Wrong. My Country ’tis of Thee is the God Save the Queen copy. God Bless America was written by Irving Berlin in 1918, and revised in 1938 largely because of happenings in Europe. The lyrics are seldom heard anymore; all you get is the refrain. It is more interesting to hear the whole song from a musical standpoint, especially in the last century.

Stephen Fry is what makes the clip. But YMMV, of course.

All I can say thank God we can actually start watching live college football. At this point I don’t even care who it is. First couple of weeks of the season I’ll watch any game that comes on.

My favorite clip for the start of the season. And a great way to intro the sport to people from other countries.
Thanks for sharing our passion for this great sport.
Long time reader. Infrequent commenter. I’d just like to say thank you. Apart from a Saturday in Athens, this blog makes my favorite sport come to life more than anything.
Nice work sir.
Please never stop.

Yeah, I’m gonna piggyback off David. You run a great blog Senator. Its been a frustratingly long pre-season, having to listen to pro-Richt vrs. anti-Richt crowds take the air out of the room, but you have filled the void for me that the Mayor left over at DS. The sheer volume you produce is remarkable and your analysis is fantastic. Thanks for the work you put in.
