Greg McGarity, looking into the abyss

It may have been a moot point at the time, given that, in retrospect, Greg McGarity relied heavily on the guidance of the the search firm he retained to find a replacement for Mark Richt the fix was in, but I, like others, wondered why 2015’s hot coaching name, Houston’s Tom Herman, seemed to receive little more than a cursory glance from Georgia’s direction.  Sure, there were some bullshit rumors floating around about Herman, but given that his name is floating around as a possible replacement after the 2016 season if things go south at places like LSU, Texas or Texas A&M, it’s hard to take any of that seriously.

On the other hand, I can see how this might have stopped things dead in their tracks in Athens.

According to an interoffice memo sent from Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek to Herman on Nov. 30, Herman would receive a $5 million bonus—payable over two years—if Houston joins “a conference with television of $20 million or more per member.” The Big 12 fits that description. Should none of those super premium jobs open and Houston win a golden ticket into the Power 5, that extra $2.5 million a year combined with his $3 million salary would pay Herman what many of the best Power 5 coaches make. The memo also promises that upon entry to such a conference, the school would immediately renegotiate a contract that would put Herman’s compensation among the top half of the league’s head coaches.

That’s just what Herman had on the table from a mid-major program.  Can you imagine what his agent was looking for from a potential SEC employer, particularly one who had just canned a ten-game winner?  I can only imagine McGarity’s response to having the terms of that memo read to him and then being asked, “and you?”.

At least he’s paying Kirby less than he was paying Richt.

Ehhh…I think it had more to do with the offense and approach. I don’t think we want a Meyer/spread disciple. It’s just not who we are. We would have lost Eason and had to completely shift offensively. Teams have an identity, and Herman’s just not ours.

Plus, though he’s recruiting well, I’m not sold on his recruiting the southeast. Instead, we got the very best recruiter in the southeast. We ain’t gonna out scheme Bama and LSU. We need better players. Lots of them.

Everybody jokes about the triple option until they have to play against it.

Why are we not able to outscheme LSU or Bama?

Because you have to have the horses to match up. When it’s closer to level, then scheme matters. And I’m not talking about beating them once. I’m talking about going 50/50 with them in the series. We need more depth, bigger players, and lots of them. We’re getting there, but recruiting was what was lacking most (and details) under Richt…not our schemes.

        • Of those two, Bama gave us trouble. Recently, other than the 2nd half in the Dome in 2011, we’ve been at the same level as Corn Dog Nation.

Agreed, but we haven’t played them every year either. We haven’t been on the same level as them the last 7 years or so as a whole. We need to be to the point where we’re in the Dome and don’t feel like we have to play out of minds to win.

            • We’ve been better than LSU except for last year every year since 2012 including a win over them. We’re 2-2 going back to 2008 vs. LSU. We beat them soundly in Baton Rouge in ’08. The SEC gave them a win in Athens in ’09. They took us to the woodshed the last 30 minutes in the Dome in ’11. We beat them fair and square in ’13.

Because we don’t have Charlie Weis, obviously.

I’m just glad McCheapskate decided not to go the ultimate economy route and hire an option disciple from Navy. I’m sure he could have gotten Ken Numioloiooioioioio, or whoever that guy is, for a little more than cab fare and an open tab at the Varsity. Good thing He Who Must Not Be Named (hint: he’s an acquaintance of a former UGA gymnastics coach) wanted someone a little more expensive.

All right – I’ll say it.

I would have loved that hire. That scheme is a nightmare to defend, he has won a lot of games at Navy, we’d be recruiting different types of players on offense than most of our competitors which even if our recruiting classes looked worse on paper they would be better for what we needed them to actually do.

I never really saw Herman as a realistic option…offensive philosophy is not really in line with what we are, plus he’s a Texas guy (although I know he was the Georgia recruiter for OSU). I don’t think he would have stayed here very long. He definitely would have been the sexy hire, but long term I don’t think that was a viable option.

I think Smart was the guy before Herman threw his name in the hat. I’d like to know if they reached out to Smart before or after the WLOCP.

  6. …finally fired Richt and ponied up the necessary money. Honestly, I think they did themselves a huge disservice by not property vetting the process but this is on McGarity and Co.

South Carolina forced the issue. Richt was probably gone after Florida regardless, but once they started sniffing around Kirby, that forced McG’s hand (not that I think he was heartbroken about that–I don’t think he was ever that high on Rivht to begin with).

I wish we had spent a little time and effort in vetting a few more head coaches, but McG getting his guy on the cheap was probably too much to overcome.

Kirby gets what, 3.5 million? That is pretty good for a 1st time head coach. An SEC championship and trip to playoffs will get him a new contract and raise, not to mention what a national championship would get him. Plus, it being UGA and living in Athens, is worth a lot, IMHO. It is a hell of a lot better than living in Houston, been there, done that, couldn’t wait to get back to Athens.

Still less than they paid the last guy and significantly less than they would have paid any head coach with experience.

So yes, 3.5 million is a lot of money and Athens is great, but considering that Herman would have likely cost 5+million and going crazy for a guy like Chip Kelly would have cost 7+ million….3.5 is a steal for McG.

subject to results, of course. We all have great hopes for KS, but he’s only a financial bargain if he wins big. We could have hired guys for lots less to win 6 games, right???

Not really. Anything south of $4million is cheap by SEC standards. Every coach in the west is making at least 4 right now and at least one of them will have a losing record in conference.

Our current AD hitched his star to CKS……this is the revenue source that drives our athletic program. The AD will be judged/measured/skewered by the other HC hires, this hire had to be CKS. Anything less would have seen this ADs future as the tidy bowl man. The dark hole was less about the HC from Houston versus his legacy @our beloved institution. Increases in the football portion of the UGA budget have begun….CKS knows this and will exploit it with success. Vetting more interviews would have increased the search committee final check, giving the keys to CKS was end of conversation.

AD made the right move. IF Kirby can coach a lick, we will be fine. Recruiting is already at a HIGHer level than it was. We need more horses….depth may be an issue for a year or so, but that will be fixed.

I guess we will never have an experienced head coach at UGA during my life time except for ole Jim Donnan. I’ll be 70 in April and UGA has just never cared enough about getting a proven winner to coach football. Donnan was as close as we came unless you count Mason’s one day acceptance. I don’t think it was for a lack of trying. We just could not attract the interest in the job. It makes no sense but it’s all I’ve got. If somebody can explain it to me I’d be grateful. I always said Mark was the longest OJT I’ve ever seen.

A proven winner doesn’t always work, see Rich Rod at Michigan. What has Butch done at UT?

I know right. Look at Saban, Miles, and Meyer…those guys all had experience as the head guy before they got to their current schools.
