Mike Griffith’s fake juice

Quite the lede here from Mr. Griffith:

The evidence is mounting: Georgia is the most doubted preseason No. 1 program coming off back-to-back national titles in history.

The evidence?

Kirk Herbstreit, the lead personality on ESPN’s College GameDay and perhaps the most respected commentator in the sport, is pushing his chips behind Alabama.

Oh.

I guess it’s lucky for Nebraska that Herbie didn’t join ESPN until 1996.

Steele’s 2023 Position Unit Rankings

You’d think a team that Phil Steele calls to win its third national title in a row would have position units that dominate across the board, but that’s not quite the case, at least not in the way you might expect.  Here’s how he ranks Georgia’s eight units in his Preview:

  • Quarterbacks:  42
  • Running backs:  6
  • Receivers:  4
  • Offensive line:  1
  • Defensive line:  2
  • Linebackers:  1
  • Defensive backs:  2
  • Special teams:  18

Five units ranked in the top five nationally (four in the top two!) is pretty wild.

I guess you could say the sky’s the limit if someone steps up to take control at quarterback, although that doesn’t appear to matter to Steele.
