You can take a Dawg out of Athens, but you can’t take Athens out of a Dawg.

Pretty, pretty cool.

Aside from that, how was the scrimmage, Mr. Smart?

From what I’ve been able to glean from reading various reports, there seems to be a general consensus about how yesterday’s Georgia scrimmage went.  Marc Weiszer has as good a summary as anyone, in that regard.

  • It was hot and Kirby Smart liked that from a conditioning standpoint.
  • It was not the best day for the quarterbacks.  “I can tell you that I’d like to see all three of them play better, but the people around them have to play better,” Smart said. “If there’s seven drops in the scrimmage because of wet hands and heat, then you evaluate that.”  Sounds like that might be the case for some of the receivers, too.
  • There is some nice depth along the offensive line.  (That said, it sounds like the d-line got the better of them yesterday.)
  • It’s hard to evaluate the running back situation right now, because of injuries to Milton and Branson Robinson, along with Andrew Paul’s ongoing recovery from last year’s ACL injury.
  • Something similar can be said about the defensive backfield, at least at cornerback.  However, it looks like Georgia is going to be just fine at the star and safety positions.

Nothing too earthshattering, in other words.  Got anything to add?  Share in the comments.

If you don’t have a sense of humor, what have you got?

No need to poke fun at JT Daniels for the winding path his college football career has taken.

He’s doing that himself.

I can’t help rooting for him.  Hope he finds success on the field this season.

Prior restraint

So, I couldn’t help but wonder — would the AJ-C’s first UGA scrimmage report stay Judd-free?  The answer is yes, but not without some effort.

When Chip Towers’ report appeared yesterday, it ended with a short note about De’Nylon Morrissette’s absence from scrimmage, in which Towers paraphrased Smart’s comment, putting a single word, “programming”, in quote marks.  Skepticism seemed strongly implied, at least to me.

And I don’t think I’m the only one who took it that way, because when I pulled the story up this morning, it had been extensively rewritten, with the Morrissette bit in the middle, more fully fleshed out.

Smart acknowledged that wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette has not been participating in preseason camp. However, he insisted that the sophomore from Stone Mountain remains with the team. Smart said Morrissette will resume practice when classes begin Wednesday.

“He’s been with us; he’s just not practicing,” Smart said. “He’s allowed to go to administrative programming, he’s allowed to go to a lot of programming we’ve got in place for him.”

Morrissette has been undergoing treatment, taking classes and attending meetings regarding substance abuse since he was arrested for DUI following a high-speed accident May 9.

Hmmm.  At least we know, while Judd is gone, they’ve still got an editor or two around.

Scrimmage note: if Kirby ain’t happy…

… then things sound pretty normal.

Honestly, I’d be more worried if he didn’t say something like that.
