Secrets of the game

I’ll never be able to watch a game played in the rain the same way again.

Position filled.

Meet Fran Brown’s replacement.

On Saturday night, Georgia announced that it had hired USC’s Donte Williams as defensive backs coach. Williams comes to Georgia after spending the last four seasons with the Trojans.

Williams is extremely well thought of as a recruiter, which is something you almost take for granted in a Kirby Smart hire.

As for his coaching chops, well, yeah, he’s been at Southern Cal for the past four years and Lincoln Riley has finally gotten around to cleaning house on the side of the defensive staff.  How much of a concern should that be for us?  (For the record, there were a lot of Southern Cal fans posting on social media after his departure that were happy to see him leaving.)

I start with the basic belief that Smart and Muschamp are bound to be better mentors than Grinch and that Georgia runs a much more sound defense than USC has.  You’d think Williams is bound to benefit greatly by his new surroundings.  Also, there’s one thing his secondaries have generally been very good at:  interceptions.  Oregon was second nationally in interceptions in 2019 (20) and 11th in 2018 (17).  Southern Cal was third in 2021, with 19.

But back to recruiting for just a sec.  Williams has shown a knack for signing five-star kids out of California.  If he can continue that roll in Athens, that certainly ups Georgia’s national recruiting profile.
