Replenishing the crayon box

I really, really like what the staff has done on the offensive side of the ball this offseason.

And speaking of crayon boxes, Seth Emerson’s come up with another good Bobo take with this($$):

By the points-per-game metric, Mike Bobo-coordinated offenses now account for two of the three highest-scoring teams in school history. Anybody still criticizing Bobo’s credentials or capabilities is not to be taken seriously on the subject anymore.

Now, if anyone wants to say Bobo’s offenses couldn’t finish in the biggest moment and points out that he has a championship ring as an analyst and not as the coordinator, that is a fair criticism. But in a year where Georgia’s defense wasn’t as good as expected, the team was in the position it was — unbeaten — in large part because of Bobo and its offense.

As I’ve posted before, the 2019 SECCG was Smart’s road to Damascus moment, when he realized (just like Saban did) that the old tried and true weren’t going to get the Georgia program where it ultimately needed to go.  In this day and age, if you want to be elite, you’ve got to have an offense that can score.  And as Seth points out, that’s what they did:

  • Fourth nationally in yards per play for the third straight year (7.3)
  • Fifth nationally in total yards per game (496.5)
  • Fifth nationally in scoring offense (40.1)

Couple that with an excellent defense and special teams, and you can go a long way.   That was done with a new starting quarterback and offensive coordinator, by the way, both of whom are returning for the ’24 season.

Couple that with plenty of returning experience on the offensive line, even with the losses of Van Pran and Mims and the receiving corps (yes, McConkey will be missed) and you’ve got a solid base to start with.

Are there questions?  Of course.  Bowers was a unicorn, so it’s not as if there’s going to be a seamless transition in the wake of his departure.  (As that famous line from Moneyball goes, I guess they’ll hope to recreate his stats in the aggregate.)  You could also say the running back room looks a trifle sketchy, based on the health situation.

But that’s where I like the rest of the offeseason effort.  The staff has done a terrific job mining the transfer portal for exactly the kind of talent the roster needs to proceed.  Etienne is exactly what the doctor ordered to stabilize the running back group.  It looks like they’ve found someone to step into Ladd’s shoes, as well as a tall receiver capable of fighting for 50/50 balls.

I’m not about to proclaim we’re on the verge of seeing a major improvement on the offensive side of the ball this coming season — hardly likely with Bowers gone — but I’m not worried about a major step back, either.  Mike Bobo should still have some fun.  And so should we.

I like the sound of that. I hope it all works out.
    Sounds possible.

The networks and other “geniuses” running the sport are doing everything they can to kill the goose. I am still looking forward to next year big time

Too many critics gloss over that not only did we have a new coordinator and QB this year. We also lost our #1AND#2 running backs, 2 starting OTs and a different unicorn in Big O from last year.

Bobo just needs do get the monkey off his back and win a big game – just like Kirby had to.

If by “a tall receiver capable of fighting for 50/50 balls” you’re thinking of the kid from Vandy, I agree. Like some other receivers we’ve had that weren’t 5-star recruits, but were very productive he came to football late. I think his were track athletes and were wary of him playing football when he was young. But he is about as tall and about as fast as Bowers. If he’s willing to work like Brock I think his ceiling is high.

While I don’t like watching the roster sausage being made. I’m glad Kirby’s running the kitchen. The skill position pickups have really been impressive.

The offense under Bobo was the strength of last years team. How anyone can not appreciate how good coach Bobo is it’s beyond my understanding at this point.

Now if an elite Dlineman or two ends up matriculating to Athens my wish list is complete.

  9. Well written, Bluto, and damn glad to see you’re back. Bobo should have more weapons next fall, and having Beck back makes us all feel better w Bama and TX on the schedule…we are going to have fun this season.

You know you have made it when you win back to back NCs only to have an “off year” where you lose 1 game and wind up 3rd (and really could have won it all if not for 1 off day at the wrong time). With the new 12 team format, I may never see a DAWG team not in the hunt for NC as long as Kirby is in Athens.
All kidding aside, the DL has been and will continue to be my biggest concern.

Couldn’t agree more. I was really hoping to get Deone Walker from UK. Would love Oatis to leave Tuscaloosa for Athens. Even if we get neither guy, we need Hall, Jarrett, and newcomer McLeod to contribute big-time in ’24. Wouldn’t hurt if Brinson actually committed to making the most of his talent, either.

Bobo did a good job bringing Beck along. As Beck grew the offense grew. Bobo had a relapse for 2 quarters or so on the SECCG. Everyone has bad days at the office, hopefully it happens against tenn tech next year.

    Great news for the O.

Now we gotta figure out how to get the D ready to stop all those returning QBs on our regular season schedule.

Here’s to T-Rob being up for it.

Amen brother after the Orange Bowl I asked why we have two guys that can barely walk getting almost all the snaps and I don’t recall Dillion getting a target? He had some big games for us, Tenn comes to mind!

The 2nd paragraph is the sore spot for those that aren’t keen on Bobo’s return and feel this season is exactly what they expected, from new records, to a loss that should have been a W at the wrong time.

I am not wanting to get on that dead horse. However, I do think many that defend Bobo don’t understand the other side. Also yes we are hoping to see Bobo succeed and bring home the hardware. I’d love to see Bobo lifting up whatever new trophy they come up with next January.

Etienne was a good get. However, the RB room had plenty of talent this year. Unfortunately majority of the room wasn’t healthy. I applaud Etienne for coming to Athens, I think if the RBs are healthy he will have some serious competition for carries.

The “couldn’t finish in the biggest moment” bit really does just feel a bit like “we couldn’t talk shit about Bobo because he was winning so we had to wait ’til he lost” to me.

Do you know what the difference between Todd Monken and Mike Bobo is? Monken got a playoff rematch with Alabama after his offense laid an egg in Atlanta which is now explained away by conditioning issues or player injuries. Bobo didn’t.

I don’t remember Monken failing to convert a 3rd and manageable with basically the same play multiple times.

Good point, Bobo & Co. only went 4-12 on 3rd downs against Alabama. Coach Monken’s offense, by contrast, managed to go… 3-12 on 3rd downs against Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship Game.

Monken went 2-4 on 4th down while Bobo was a perfect 2-2. Monken racked up 449 total yards which was indeed more than 100 yards more than Bobo’s total, but the bottom line is that they both only managed 24 points. We got our asses handed to us in 2021, but in 2023, Bobo’s offense damn near got it done and only lost by 3. Sometimes when you’re playing against Nick Saban, you call some plays that don’t go for touchdowns.

I tried to understand the other side, and I think there are valid criticisms to be made against Bobo as there are with any coach. But many of his detractors were using arguments that just weren’t based in reality. Like ignoring personnel losses, injuries, etc., making every offensive failure all about Bobo but not holding Schumann/Muschamp to that same standard, and so on. If pointing out those realities makes me a “Bobo defender”, so be it.

The “sets records but craps the bed in big games” narrative definitely got a boost after the SECCG, but people forget that Monken went 1-2 against Bama too.

Keeping Beck in Athens was gigantic. I’m excited about all of the chatter from our players about Puglisi and I’ve been excited for a while about Stockton, but having Beck back at the controls to stabilize the transition from some of those other mainstays moving on is a big deal.

They even go back to some of their greatest hits (Kirby stole our recruiting board on his way out the door). LOL!

I’m surprised at how many people in the Georgia fanbase cling to PPG as some kind of end all be all metric. We’ve known since 2014 the offense can average 41 ppg, and still lay eggs against your two biggest rivals.

Hopeful the UGA football staff/student athletes are a tad pissed off concerning the one”L” in 2023 and approach 2024 with a little bit more push, a little bit more kick in their step, spring prep and summer work outs should be more than normal heading into fall, don’t believe the play book will be new and improved, vs better prepared, better repped, UGA football “O” should be operational at a high level, UGA football “D” will be young, mobile and athletic, Special Teams play should continue at that A+ level…GO DAWGS!!
