Defensive Coordinator Watch, Week 3

After the third week of play, here how Grantham stacks up against the three men that broke Mark Bradley’s heart by (reportedly) turning down the Georgia defensive coordinator’s job:  Smart, Chavis and Foster (stats via the NCAA):

TOTAL DEFENSE

  • Alabama, 9th
  • LSU, 25th
  • Georgia, 37th
  • Virginia Tech, 49th

SCORING DEFENSE

  • Alabama, 2nd
  • LSU, 5th
  • Georgia, 39th
  • Virginia Tech, 82nd

That’s what happens when one team plays Mississippi State and the other plays Arkansas.  LSU hosts a presumably more competent offense this week when it takes on West Virginia, so we’ll see what happens with those numbers.

In any event, it’s still a credible showing.  Bud Foster would certainly trade places with his former assistant.

Do VPI’s stats against James Madison even factor into their season stats? I thought 1AA games didn’t count?

They’d like to think the entire game didn’t count!

Lot’s of football left to play, but I expected Bama’s D to taper off some. Not so. And to think Marcell Dareus just came back last week.

They replaced like what, 9 starters but returned Hightower, Dareus, and Carroll?

Damn that’s impressive. But there is no reason why we can’t be just as strong.

Foster was toasted by Boise State. VaTech spent spring and fall preparing for that one game. Most coaches think Foster is a super DC with players. Well Foster can coach a defense and his record speaks to that fact. But this is what those above referenced numbers mean to us this season.

Boise State can attack a defense. There are reasons why we like their offense…and guess what so do some other people. Do not get caught up in their schedule. Boise State has a super offense and is one of the reasons they are ranked so high.

We think the numbers say more about Boise than Va Tech’s DC perceived failure. We think UGA needs to go to a spread offense or a hybrid. How many times do you think Sanford Stadium would be full the entire game with an offense like that?

We continue to press our case and argument.

Toasted? There was 1:09 on the clock when the Smurfs score on a 13 yard passing route. Goodness, if Foster was toast, then Hiroshima rained down between the hedges and on CTG. Smurfs win by three….. Hogs by 7. V Tech in the tank…. kinda like the Dawgs post LSU on the way Neyland Stadium. Those kinda losses get into a players head.
    just sayin’
