Is there another head coach-quarterback relationship in the SEC – hell, anywhere – quite like the one in Columbia?
… Later, a reporter asked Spurrier if it was true – as quarterback Stephen Garcia said – that this game was the biggest in South Carolina history.
“No, that’s not true. Please don’t listen to Stephen all the time when he’s speaking,” Spurrier said.
Outstanding! SOS is a world-class prick, but he’s much easier to take when we beat him regularly. Plus, much of what he says is genuinely funny (at least to me).

Has a fanbase and a coach ever seemed to mirror each others rollercoaster of emotions so perfectly? I had a friend in high school who tried to debate with me which school had a better gameday experience, UGA or USC. She argued, “At South Carolina, we have a good time even if we lose.” I replied,”Well we don’t lose.”

I’m assuming you haven’t been in high school for at least several years…

Wouldn’t they have to or stop showing up eventually.

I’m beginning to think that SOS and Gracia have a very unhealthy Sado-masochistic relationship. Steve calls him bad things and Garcia loves it. Florida will destroy SCU book it.

I think SC can beat UF, but they can’t beat November. UF wins big.

maybe the Head Ball Coach thinks if his team doesn’t know this is a big game, they won’t swallow their tongues at kickoff. The swallows may come back to Capistrano in the spring, but the chickens are coming home to roost in November. Florida is going to beat them like they stole something, and South Carolina fans can go back to wondering what it would be like to play in the Georgia Dome or the Superdome some day.

Heard a funny story about Spurrier and Doug Johnson, no idea if it’s true, but after a bad throw or INT from Johnson, he walks over to Spurrier, who says “That’s OK, it’s my fault Doug. I was the one who gave you a scholarship.”

I’d love to believe that’s true. It’s too funny (and just like SOS) to not be true.

On Spurrier’s relationships with his QBs:
I’ve always loved this story from James Bates’ hilarious impression session of Spurrier. Starting at around 1:00, he goes into Spurrier’s words to the team at the end of their last practice before playing FSU in 94, I think. He then proceeds to mock Weurffel–the original, and legitimately, saintly Florida QB.

Very funny. Thank you.

Even for Steve, that is funny. Garcia has been an entertainly QB his entire career, no surprise he would grate on SOS. I agree that Florida’s new offense, at home, with a chance to salvage a bad season, will roll SC. Garcia against that secondary could be a disaster for SC. The real positive with this will be watching AU wax the Ga Dome rug with Florida in early September. (AU will win one of the two remaining games to get to Atlanta.)

Sorry, didn’t read my post. Thought you were referring to our loss in Sept. Need edit feature here.

USCe lost the game Saturday because SOS forgot his visor, ergo, had nothing to throw at Garcia to get his attention. Well, he could have thrown the headphones, but I don’t think the cord was long enough. Coaching Garcia would drive me nuts, at times he is a mini Teabow, at times he makes Joe Cox look like Bradford. I would rather have a mediocre QB, as long as he was consistant. At least you could come up with some kind of game plan.

Spurrier knows what he’s talking about.
He was involved in South Carolina’s “biggest game in history”, a 54-17 loss in 2001.

Oh, good one, Joe! I remember that game. Carolina’s second consecutive Outback-beatOhioStateonafieldgoal season. Beat UGA for the second year in a row. Got up into the top ten earlier in the year but wet the best against somebody (Arkansas?). Then still had a chance to be “in it” against Florida (even though USC had already lost to UT, too). Big energy, night game on ESPN.
It can always be worse. Even 2008 Bama black out game can be topped. We could bel South Carolina…
