In a tizzy

I grok the circumstances, believe me, but I’m still having a hard time deciding which is funnier – the press having a hissy fit because Richt is tired of hearing the same lame question repeated ad nauseam, or the fans’ freakout over what sounds to me like little more than a tongue-in-cheek response by Bobo to a question that has to rank so far down on the list of real issues which need to be addressed as to be almost trivial.

I hope the tongue in cheek response was just that and agree it is extremely far down on our list of issues. The fact that some people have to wonder is evidence of how far we have fallen and what we have come to expect though

If Richt wants to quit hearing the same ad nauseam questions, then he needs to fix the same old problems we seem to have every year. In regards to Bobo, he should know you can’t joke with some of the fanbase when things are going poorly (which I’m sure he’s tired of the # question as well)

People who get pissed and bunched up over interview responses from players and coaches get what they deserve. There is nothing they can say that will be satisfying if the on field result isn’t what you want. Every word they say will be interpreted so as to align with your self fulfilling prophecy and serves only to fuel your frustration.

No it would not, and both of them were wearing #1 against Boise in a game where our offense struggled.

The quote is concerning because it illustrates a severe lack of common sense.

If I’m not mistaken, they said that they held Smith out of the offense, because his foot had not fully healed and they didn’t want to give him the extra touches out of fear of a set back in recovery.

If they have intentions of Smith being in the offense this week, one of the two will have on a different number.

Well, obviously there aren’t 100 different guys that will see the field, so duplicating numbers shouldn’t be a problem. The fact that this is an issue is insulting. You tell Crowell to wear a different number, end of story unless B. Smith wants to give it up. If not, tough. You can switch to #1 when Smith is gone. How hard is this?

        Like

        • Hackerdog

We promised Crowell he could have #1 when we recruited him. If we go back on that promise, then future recruits won’t believe us when we promise them something.

If we had told Crowell when we recruited him that he couldn’t have #1, he may not have come to UGA. Then we would be choosing between a converted linebacker and a little person as our starting tailback.

I would much rather have the problem of having two #1s than either of the above issues.

What’s pitiful about what you just said is that it is true. Can you see Bama under Saban ever having a problem like this? This just demonstrates what a decline we have experienced under CMR and is emblematic of the bigger problem–the HC is really not in charge of the program.

I don’t know if Saban promises jersey numbers or not. I know that a lot of programs do. I don’t see it as indicative of a poor program to tell a kid that he can have a certain number.

FSU unretired #34 for Ernie Simms in 2003. They were national champions in 1999 and played for the national championship in 2000. They were an elite program that made a promise to an elite recruit. It happens.

With all due respect Senator, this is another great Richt idea – load up a roster full of walk-on’s, 4th stringers and JV guys and duplicate numbers. I would presume there is an implied intimidation factor when 100+ come thru the tunnel and onto the field? Why are there so many rostered that will NEVER see PT? Of the 100+ rostered, ther are 50 or so that MIGHT see the field. The others roam the sidelines with no chance of seeing action. In the old days, 4th stringers, JV’ers and scout team kids never even wore a Varisty jersey. Doesn’t bother me….but made me look at our roster and compare to previous in years gone by.

I’d love to see that Murray has learned to tuck and run or throw it away after 4 or 5 seconds of nothing being open! You think Richt isn’t pissed about this??? He ripped his linemen after their performance yesterday at practice! Know what they were working on??? 3rd down conversions! Sound like a man who doesn’t care to you?? That’s why these questions irritate him! He wants to win and knows what people are whispering! I’d be pissed off too. But if you snap, you show your players it’s ok to act that way. Would it make everyone happy to know he was channeling that anger into his gameplan? That he was telling his players to do the same on the field? Screw last weekend! Beat USCe! Pluck them and frie them! Shut the haters up and get back to the grind!

It is frustrating as a fan when our HC does not seem to care one way or the other about games. You want to call it his mild mannered, humble nature. That is probably 100% accurate, but it comes off as the former. Combine that with the fact we continue to underachieve and just got our ass kicked by a tiny school from Idaho.

I think everyone should get off Bobo. Look at the stats. We are averaging more points now than in previous periods. The difference is that our defense can’t stop anybody.

THIS is a great break down.

JBJ, the Coaches By The Numbers post you linked t was great. The problem is his numbers were wrong. UGA won 6SEC Championships under Vince Dooley not four and he cooked the books on winning percentage calculations for all the coaches. Dooley’s winning percentage actually is about the same as Richt’s and the other coaches’ are all actually higher. The all-time winning percentage for UGA is higher too (about 66%). The appearance is (intentional or unintentional) that he is puffing Richt’s record and minimizing everything else. If the guy can’t get the numbers right it’s hard for me to take him seriously about anything. I agree with him that the problem generally has been on defense for the last 5 years or so in the aggregate. Who’s responsibility is that exactly? The players? God?

As you point out, the main issue is that the defense is not getting it done. I agree he has some math problems, but in general the current problems on defense are obvious from the number of points given up in recent years.

I think that was designed to prevent his injury and to make sure that he was available for the SC game. My view was that if he was getting sacked all that time, didn’t that constitute his endangerment? I feel that they(Richt and staff) had SC as the top target and think Murray will probably be given the green light this weekend.

Not on this blog, because postings to the reasons have been mentioned over and over including quotes from the players that it will never constitute a problem. If they needed to change, they would if the staff told them to. The players also mentioned that the important thing was to play on the field and having to change numbers if the circumstances came up would be no problem. End of manufactured controversy (for the second time).

Count me among the people who were in a tizzy about the number issue from day one. However, it’s been solved. Branden Smith is on record as saying that he’s willing to change his number if needed, so it’s a non-issue. Bobo’s quote was clearly tongue-in-cheek, because… again… Branden Smith is on record saying that if it’s necessary to help the team, he’s willing to change shirts. This is laudable and shows me a guy that wants to win. We can debate the wisdom of Bobo trying to make jokes at another time. Actually, we can’t, it’s not wise and there’s really no debate. Branden Smith’s foot was still bothering him on Saturday, and there wasn’t much point in using him in a third phase of the game (he played extensively on defense and also return teams) and further exposing the foot to aggravation. Later in the year, we’ll see what happens with his deployment on offense. However, again, he’s on record saying that he’s willing to change numbers. Bobo probably hopes that future UGA opponents don’t realize that and don’t gameplan for that.

We should probably be sweating the other, very real problems facing this team.

Human nature at its worst. I hope the powers that be at UGA take note of this and do not repeat this mistake. We are essentially in the same position with CMR as Tech was with its basketball Coach Paul Hewitt who for financial reasons was allowed to hang around for years after it became apparent that he couldn’t do the job. Remember how much fun we all had at Tech’s expense pointing to that situation? Karma’s a bitch ain’t it?

Whether he’s right or wrong, Richt is trying his hardest to win ball games. To say he’s trying to get fired in order to collect his buyout is a joke, and colors my opinion of everything else you say. Saying that Richt’s merely lazy because he’s got money either way shows me that you’re not really taking an honest look at the situation.

If you believe you have a good coach, that means someone else might believe you have a good coach, and come along and poach him. So, you give him a buyout clause that makes it less likely/harder for another program to hire him away. Also, having at least a 4 year deal makes recruits comfortable about committing.

You can argue you shouldn’t have made that kind of deal with a specific coach, i.e. Paul Hewitt, but the structure is, in my mind, not the issue.

Yes, in some of our losses the defense actually was the problem (eg, Auburn). In our worst losses, an inept offense that put the defense in a position to fail repeatedly and early in the game was actually the problem. What you end up with is a score that shows the DEF giving up all these points, which does not tell the true story of the game.

I could not find the link but remember seeing it. I don’t think that the number Smith wears is that important because he can not save this team by himself but the number issue is an indication on how things are done currently.
