Harrow’s big hit

Since I’m tossing out YouTube clips this morning, here’s one of the biggest special teams plays of the season.

That drew a collective “whoa!” from the crowd.

    It was one of mine, too. The shame is that if one of the refs wanted to be dick he could have called helmet-to-helmet contact and flagged UGA. Thank goodness Penn Wagers wasn’t there.

      I would have been pissed had that call been made. Mason clearly lowered his head prior to the hit and initiated the helmet to helmet contact.

      I’m fairly certain there is no such thing as a helmet to helmet penalty when someone is rushing the ball. It only comes into play on hits against the quarterback and defenseless receivers. Once a QB or WR begins running with the ball, they lose the ability for that penalty to be thrown just like a RB. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong because I was arguing with a friend about this yesterday.

        Relevant excerpts from the 2011-2012 NCAA football rules:

        Targeting/Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet
        ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6.)

        Defenseless Player: Contact to Head or Neck Area
        ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6).

        Defenseless Player
        ARTICLE 14. A defenseless player is one who because his physical position and focus of concentration is especially vulnerable to injury. Examples of defenseless players are:
        a. A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
        b. A receiver whose focus is on catching a pass.
        c. A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball.
        d. A kick returner whose focus is on catching or recovering a kick in the
        air.
        e. A player on the ground at the end of a play.
        f. A player obviously out of the play.

          So no foul there. He didn’t hit with his crown. He went to lay his head across the guys chest and the only reason their helmets touched was because the return man lowered his. At that point in the play the returner was not defenseless. Good no call by the refs.

    I recall most of the speculation on his scholarship was that it was given to secure Crowell’s commitment. If he delivers a few hits like that on special teams for the next three years and, that’s all he does, that’s a scholarship well spent!

      Definitely. Now if only we had Barkevious Mingo it would awesome. Somebody on ESPN said the two best names for defensive players right now were Barkevious Mingo and Bacarri Rambo.

    Anybody see Trooper & “his boys” acting like they were shooting dice on the sidelines before kickoff to get fired up? CBS showed it. Yeah- nuff said..

    Auburn fans of Twitter were all kinds of lit up about the hit and Richt’s press conference mention claiming it was a deserving of a flag. Sour, sour grapes.
