“Good” in the VanGorderish sense, that is: “Bad experiences are good.”
Sort of the Plains equivalent of “May you live in interesting times.”

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
“A couple of major busts in coverage.”
Brian, did you not watch any Georgia or Oklahoma games the last 6 years?

if he watched UGA play AU he saw plenty of busts in the backfield.

As bad as Martinez was as our DC, there’s something that has me a bit worried about him reuniting with VanGorder at one of our rivals. They may not be good next year but I have a bad feeling about the years to come

I agree, but how long does Chizik have at Auburn if things don’t get better this year?

He won a NC so I’d have to think he has at least one more year after this season. If I recall correctly it only took VanGorder 2 seasons to get things turned around in Athens when he came here

We didn’t allow more than 29 in any game in 2001, but I remember some particularly horrible yardage numbers (including Gross Rexman tossing 400+ yards against our secondary).

Van-G will be back on a Pro sideline next season. Book it.

If he is I hope they hire Willie as his replacement DC!

I will see your VanGorder/Martinez duo and raise you a Grantham/Lakatos.

Those “busts” could have come from players under Martinez’s purview.

Our fans seem to have a selective memory with respect to W Martinez. While he proved to be inadequate as a d-coordinator, the guy had a pretty solid tenure with DBs at Georgia. Maybe some credit goes to the defensive lines during that era, but his secondaries weren’t bad at all.

I agree with you 100%. Martinez may not have been good on his own but dang it if he and VanGorder didn’t make it work when they were together. I for one was not happy to hear the news about the band getting back together with our rival.

“He said the secondary was inconsistent. “A couple of major busts in coverage.””
Good to know that “third and Willie” is an equal opportunity pathological organism.
